Can a model for social media be adopted in e-government to foster participative governance?

2.2. Introduction / background

The explosive entry of technology into every aspect of life has changed how people live, how
they work, how companies do business and how government serve their people (Silcock,
2001). Government are going online and using internet to provide public services to citizens
(Layne & Lee, 2001). With the impact of social media in the world that bring people closer,
social media display a variety of information and helps people to express their views, with
portals in which users answers question posted by other users, provide an alternative channel
for obtaining information on the web (Agichtein, Castillo, Donato, Gionis and Mishne, 2008).
Social media content has become crucial to millions of users; people in recent days based
their ideas and share their views on the net. As participative governance implies that the
citizen can and should participate with the authorities in their country’s governance. By
adopting social media to e-government will help in providing information from the citizen
point of view as this will lead to good governance, as Silcock (2001) suggested that through
the wide adoption of internet and web technologies government organisation can
communicate electronically with citizen, to build an effective governance depends on people
being willing to share their insights and ideas (Gilbert & Karahalios, 2009). This paper will
provide information on to whether social media can be adopted to foster good governance.
