4. APPLICATION

When 10 % production drop has been registered (after correcting for temperature effect) the
membranes should be cleaned with HEM RO cleaning chemicals. Proceed as follows:

1. -Flush the system with freshwater as described on page 19, paragraph 9.1 to 9.5.
2. -Prepare the HEM cleaning chemical NR 1, by mixing the content with 40 lts of tap
water into a clean plastic container.
3. -Prepare the system plumbing with a suction pipe from the chemical tank to the CLEANING
CONNECTION 1, and from the CLEANING CONNECTION 2, back to the chemical tank.
We have now got a closed circuit where the chemical will circulate through
the complete system and return to the tank.
If a sand filter is installed, turn the sand filter backwash valves in such
a way that the sand filter will be by-passed.
The large volume of water in the sand filter would otherwise dilute the chemicals and have
less effect on the membranes, which we are trying to treat.
4. -Open the pressure regulator valve FULLY.
5. Switch off the HP drive motor on the control box, and let the feed water pump alone
circulate the solution through the system for 15 minutes.
(Should the feed pump have problems with priming,
let the HP pump help to prime the system initially)
6. -Stop the feed water pump, and let the chemicals soak into and dissolve the dirt
on the membrane surface for 2 hours.
7. -Switch on the HP drive motor again, and start both pumps together
and let them run for 15 to 30 minutes.
8. -Switch the dump line valves to its normal position, so that the chemicals can be
washed overboard through the dump line.
Start the system, and stop it again when the chemical tank is empty.
9. -Reconnect the suction line as well to its normal position, and let seawater flush
through the system for 10 minutes without applying any pressure.
10. -Change the filter elements, flush out the chemical container, and prepare solution NR 2.
11. -Repeat step 1 to 9 with chemical NR 2.
12. -Replace the pre-filter cartridges, and disconnect the product line during the first 60 minutes
of production after a chemical cleaning.
This to avoid any traces of chemicals to reach the storage tank.

NOTE 1: -If the chemicals are allowed to circulate for too long time, the temperature will increase
in the liquid and may cause damage to the RO membrane.
-Do not let the temperature get over 40 deg C.
If required add ice to cool the chemical.
-Best results will be obtained if the solution can be kept at approx 30 deg C.

NOTE 2 : -After a chemical cleaning, run the system for at least 24 hrs in normal operation
before taking any readings on product flow or salinity of product water.

CAUTION
THIS CLEANING CHEMICAL CONTAIN SULFAMIC ACID
IN CASE OF SKIN OR EYES CONTACT :
FLUSH WITH LARGE AMOUNT OF WATER FOR SEVERAL MINUTES.
IN CASE OF INGESTION :

5. POTENTIAL ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

5.1 TOXICOLOGICAL INDICATIONS

Eyes: Corrosive to eyes.

Skin: Corrosive to the skin. Pratically non-toxic in contact whith skin.
Inhalation: Corrosive to the respiratory system.
Ingestion: Harmful is swallowed. May cause burns to mouth, throat and stomach.

5.2 FIRST AID MEASURES

Eyes: In case of contact immediately flush eyes with cool running water.
Remove contact lenses and continue flushing with plenty of water for a least 15 min.
Obtain medical attention immediately.

Skin: In case of contact immediately flush skin copiously with water for a least 15 min
while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Clean shoes thoroughly before reuse. Obtain medical attention immediately.

Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration.
If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Obtain medical attention immediately.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth; then drink one or two large glasses of water.
Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Obtain medical attention immediately.

6.2 EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering controls: Use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering
controls to keep airborne levels below recommended exposure limits.
If user operations generate dust, fume or mist, use ventilation to keep
exposure to airborne contaminants below the exposure limit.

Personal protection: Use chemical splash goggles and chemical resistant, impervious gloves.
For continued or severe exposure wear a face shield over the goggles.
Use synthetic apron, other protective equipment as necessary to prevent
skin contact.
Use a properly fitted, particulate filter respirator complying with
an approved standard if a risk assessment indicates this is necessary.
Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated exposure
levels, the hazards of the product and the safe working limits of the
selected respirator.

Exposure limits: CEIL: 2mg/m3.

7. SAFETY MEASURES

7.1 FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Flammability of the product: May be combustible at high temperature.

Flash point: > 100°C
Fire-fighting media and instructions: Use an extinguishing agent suitable for surrounding fires.
Dike area of fire to prevent product run-off.
Special protective
Equipment for fire-fighters: Fire fighters should wear appropriate protective equipment
and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full
face-piece operated in positive pressure mode.

7.2 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions: Ventilate area of leak or spill. Do not touch damaged containers or
