The city of Kuala Lumpur was
established in the late 1850’s after rich
tin mines were founded nearby. Kuala
Lumpur is located in the southern part
of Malay Peninsula. It grew quickly as a
mining settlement and trading post.In
the past, people came to Kuala Lumpur
because the city had offered lots of jobs
like a witch offering children some
candies. This would be the choice of the
government to prevent poverty; the
national government employs many of
the city’s people. It was a stupendous
way to not let people suffer because they
don’t have money to live. Since there are
lots of jobs at the city, many people from
another fabulous country, mostly Asia,
came to Kuala Lumpur to find jobs there.
Later, many of the Chinese established
business and gained a superb wealth. In
the healthy modern times, Kuala
Lumpur’s population grew rapidly like a
hare running for a race. The amount of
population now is 1,262,616 million
people living their life in Kuala Lumpur.

would love it and there’s more fun and

When I was living at Kuala Lumpur and I was 8 years old, all I
saw was big buildings like a lost tiger in a city. They have small
markets but sells lots of valuable materials for tourists or people
who need them. Not only they sell modern stuff, but they also sell
stuff from the past. If you’re ever lost around the big city of light,
you can ask people around you or the traffic police because they are
really helpful but only some of them can speak English as well as a

LANDSCAPE CHANGE OF JALAN BUKIT BINTANG

Long ago, during the 1950’s, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur was an
old village. There was no traffic because there weren’t many cars and also
the road is really peaceful. There were lots of building houses that looked
like in countryside instead of the city. In the picture, there are also lots of
trees and bushes so it was environmental. You could also see that’s there’s
not a lot of people on the roads because maybe not a lot of people likes
the place because there’s not much to do there. There’s no entertainment

It’s pretty bad that I had to
pick the top 10 because in
Kuala Lumpur, we got a whole
bunch of food to eat like a
field with different kind of
flowers and it was hard to pick
which is the prettiest. But it
would be much easier if I had
to pick the most favorites one
so here’s my list of FOOD!;
Marufuku Udon- A bowl of
noodles in soup and it also
comes with flavors. Now,
the specialty of this dish is
that
national dish in Kuala Lumpur
and Malaysia. The term Nasi
Lemak literally means “rice in
cream”. This dish is made by
soaking rice in coconut cream
and then steaming this
mixture. Lemon grass and
gingers are used to flavor the
dish.
Satay- This dish is a
marinated, skewered and
grilled meats, served with a
sauce. It can be diced or slice
meat, chicken, goat, pork or
fish. The dish also comes with
squared rice, sliced cucumber
and a bowl of sauce.

Orchard Road used to be an avenue that

Impact on the Past and the
Present
The state of Virginia used to be
inhabited by the powerful Native American
tribe, the Powhatans, who were part of the
Algonquian language group. These people
lived very primitively - by English
standards, but I would say they were simple
people. They lived in “longhouses” which
were fashioned out of straw and sticks. The
hides of the deer they hunted were used for
their clothes, the meat for their food, and
the bones for their tools. There was peace
and wildlife in Virginia before the English
arrived.

significantly in the May of 1607 when the
Virginia Company of London sent
Englishmen over “the big pond” to the New
World in order to find gold, land, and
natural resources that could be sold for
wealth and manufactured into goods that
could be sold back in England. The settlers
chose to go on this dangerous journey to get
away from the Church of England in search
of their own religious rights. They didn’t
know that the journey they were starting
was for a lot more than what they thought.
The settlers created the Jamestown
Settlement in Virginia (Named after their
King, King James I) next to the James River
(also named after King James). Because of
that, the Native Americans were driven out,
terrorized, and killed on their own land.
The English settlers brought diseases such
as the black plague, which killed both
themselves and the Natives. Other flies in
the ointment were the brackish (salt water/
fresh water) that the settlers drunk that
killed them, and their poor hunting
techniques affected their ability to get food,
so they were forced to eat the rats that came
on the boat with them ( that’s how they all
got the Black Plague). During their first
winter, their food source was scarce
(and they were awful at hunting
anyway) they lost a lot of settlers, and
that period in history was called ‘The
Starving Time.’ It was a very challenging
time for the English.

stayed at a very exquisite hotel that is right on the edge of Lake Michigan called
Lowe’s Hotel. It had a gorgeous view of the lake! Once we had settled in, we had

medium sized city constituting the capital of Thailand. There were not many buildings, and the tallest one had 9
floors. Then, around the year 1955, humans changed the landscape by installing hundreds of high-rises and skyscrap-
ers, mostly as office buildings. The population boomed and Bangkok extended to the outskirts in a vast suburban
sprawl. They did this because trade and commerce was giving the city a large amount of money, so skyscrapers re-
serve space. Today, because of this change, the city of Bangkok is now a vast metropolitan area and is a
heavyweight in today’s tourism and commerce industry.

Brendan’sAnecdote: The Floating Market

My trip to the markets of Bangkok started with me and my dad going down the river in a lit-
tle sampan. As we came closer to the markets, the smell of exotic spices wafted over me, and
reminded me of my mom’s cooking. When we came ashore, a throng of Thai shopkeepers
greeted us into their shops, which had thousands of trinkets and paraphernalia. Admittedly,
they were pretty useless; yelling at us in Thai to buy this or that, but it was an engaging expe-
rience nevertheless. After buying several Feng Shui items, we went to the makeshift restau-
rant. I ordered some charming Chicken Rice, and my dad ordered soup. We stayed there for
another hour, before heading back to our hotel. All in all, a marvelous experience.

The city of Rome was established in 753
B.C. It is located on the Tiber River which
runs through the city and is 16 kilometers (10
miles) from the Tyrrhenian Sea. So if you love
the beach this is a great place to live or visit. In
the past people came Rome because it was a
very powerful city because the Roman Empire
was based here. Today people come to Rome
because of job opportunities. Today people
also come to Rome because of the resources
like education, sports, tourism, food,
transportation, and entertainment. The job
opportunities in Rome are tour guides, chefs,
directors, actors, and teachers just to name a
few.
The population of Rome is now 2.6 billion
people. Most people who travel or live in Rome
come from other parts of Europe and from
Asia as well. The major industry in Rome
today is major motion production. Rome does
not house very many industries so it is not
considered a very industrialized city. People
chose to live in Rome due to the excellent
education, food, sports, tourist attractions, and
the exquisite food.
Let me explain some of the food, sports,
and tourist attractions of Rome. Some of the

pizza. This is of course the capital of Italian
food so no matter what restaurant you go to the
pasta will always be delicious. One sport that
you can watch in Rome is soccer. But if you are

least some of the tourist attractions in Rome
are the Domus Aurea, the Coliseum, the Trevi
fountain, and the triple Arch of Constantine.

 How People Have Changed the
Landscape
These pictures shows how people have changed the landscape of Rome. In the before picture, in
the year 71 AD Rome was mostly populated by farmers who worked in the farmlands of Rome. It
was not visited by many nor did it have a lot of buildings or places for people to stay the night in.
Then around the year 72 AD Emperor Vespasian had the Coliseum built. The Coliseum was finished
in 80AD. It was built for the entertainment. It was also built so that persecuted Christians could be
killed there by being chased by lions. Then later around through the years between the years of
1810-1814 part of this theater was excavated. Then the rest of the ruins where found 1930’s.

After that millions of people started visiting this tourist attraction every year. Humans changed
Rome by starting to build hotels for tourists to stay in, and making roads. As you can see in the
picture labeled after the Coliseum is behind all these buildings, roads, and tons of people. Rome is
now full of cultural and life. I bet it wasn’t like this a long time ago. Well I hope that if you visit Rome
you will see just what I am talking about and see just how much it has changed.

! Back in 1616 and 1636, a few European navigators explored the whole east of Australia. One of the Navigators
named Captain James Cook was the first to discover Australia’s West Coast (including New South Wales – Sydney). This
lead to the European (British) Colonization and heritage of Australia. Although Captain James Cook was not the first man
to “step” in Australia’s west, he was just the first to claim it. Thousands of years before James, The aboriginal tribes roamed
Australia’s vast suburbs with their beliefs and cultures. Sadly, the aboriginals have departed with Sydney’s present culture.
Then everything changed when Sydney’s government was lacking a lot of money from the immigration department and
discovered that there was an overwhelming amount of non-white people migrating from Europe and was thought to be
the cause for the lack of money. Not only was Sydney lacking wealth from the immigration department but Sydney was
also becoming under populated in comparison with the city’s size. Sydney’s city was as lonely as the city of Duns borough.
Sydney’s government overlooked many options to resolve this situation, but firmly decided to put in a “White Australia
Policy” This policy was dedicated to the non-white people migrating from Europe as they were thought to not have much
value and were not able to provide Sydney with wealth (from high taxes). This was because during the time of racist
accusations, the non-white Europeans were not able to find well-paid jobs. This racist time was almost as harsh as the
Cold War.
Sydney has seen a big difference in the population growth because of the White Australia Policy. This was mostly from the
different causes going at the same time period. Each of these had an impact just like a domino effect. First, the “White
Australia Policy” was set, keeping the non-white Europeans from migrating to Australia. Second, Australian tourist
attractions were becoming more popular as they were advertising them across the world. Third, After World War II was
over, thousands of European residents were migrating to Australia in fear that more danger may be coming. Fourth, back
in the 1900’s, it was thought the “white” people had more abilities so the “white” Europeans were able to apply for better
jobs and earn more money. From these 4 reasons, Sydney and the rest of Australia’s economy improved their wealth and
population crisis. Now, Sydney has become a wonderful multi-cultural environment with all races freely excepted. Being
Asian, a multi-cultural city has tons of pros as kids grow up accepting and respecting other people’s cultures and religions.

Population & Resources

The city of Sydney was inhabited for 40,000 years by the aboriginals,
and was colonized by the British in 1788. It was also in 1788 when
Sydney was established by Arthur Phillip who was part of the First
Fleet as a Penal Colony. The city is located in New South Wales,
Australia (Oceania), West of New Zealand. Sydney is a coastal city that
is adjacent to the Tasman Sea, which is in the Pacific Ocean. During
Sydney’s early days, a various amount of people came to Sydney for
Trade (from a huge amount of harbours). Not only was trade the main
reason for migrating residents, but the education and jobs were also
main reasons. The most popular jobs during the 1960’s were Therapy

experience to see them now, as global warming is decreasing the
population of most endangered species. Last but not least, is the every
so famous Beaches on Sydney’s coast. Beaches such as Bondi Beach
and Manly Beach, are constantly visited by Sydneysiders (Sydney
Residents) as surfing is what most Sydneysiders learn to do at an Early
Age. Sydney’s Beaches have made a phenomenal impact on the city
today.
The Sydney region contains 4.5 million people, and the British take
up 5% of that. As well as Chinese (2%), New Zealanders (2%) despite
the Australians. Sydney is so multicultural that 4 in 10 people in Sydney
are migrants. The major industries and businesses today include
transportation, manufacturing, business/finance services, health, life
science, as well as logistics. Today, migrants choose to live in Sydney
because of its location in the coastal region (trade) and the
temperature because despite its summer weather, Sydney’s region is
very temperate because Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere.
This means that summer occurs from December to February, and
winter goes from June to August. Therefore Sydney is now one
of the most Multi-Cultural destinations with tons of jobs and
trading opportunities from the coastal city and various
harbours. Sydney is a remarkable This place for all ages as for
kids- Sydney has a lot of theme parks, zoos, and recreation

How People Have Changed The Landscape
From the pictures shown, you can
clearly see how much Sydney has
changed. During the year 1890’s,
Sydney’s Railway Square has
dramatically changed. First, the
transportation has adjusted to a fuel
powered bus instead of the railway
system they had in the past. Second,
you can see the architecture of the
buildings change from being a European
influenced style, to a more modernized
convenient design. This was because
during 1890, Sydney was mostly
populated with Europeans and
European architects, meaning European-
Styled buildings. Although as Sydney
progressed to the 21st century, the
architects have decided to adapt their
designs to make them fit in with the
present. This city has as much cultures
and nationalities as there are stars in
the skies. Third, the city built roads to
replace the railway system and to make
it more comforting for the residents
who use local transportation system.
Now, the impact of this change has led
to a new refined way of transportation
(convenient), a modernized building
structure, and a more comforting
environment with a touch of European
influence. Many buildings now are
minimizing the amount of European
influence to add to the modernized
culture of the 21st century. However,
the Railway Square has still kept its use
and importance to the residents and
tourists who go there as a daily routine.

I always loved a good beach, but Sydney’s
Bondi Beach blew me away. With the sound of RAILWAY S QUARE 1890
the Chirping Seagulls, the scent of the salty
water, the soft sand beneath your feet; it’s a
dream come true. Bondi Beach isn’t just for
Swimming, but the giant waves attract a ton of
surfers. It’s also a good place for Picnics, as
the food surrounding Bondi is very good.
Sydney has phenomenal imported Italian
food…with one bite, you’re In Italy. The herbs
and aromas that come from the food are

Aquarium surrounds you with all types of
fish, jellyfish, sharks, whales, and all types of
sea creatures. The high class, fancy hotel

Boston is located in one of first

British Parliament had put expensive
import taxes on their exported tea.
This would help the “East India
Trading company” get out of financial
problems. The Bostonians didn’t like
this at all so hundreds of citizens
hatched a plan to get rid of the extra
money the British had made them pay
as they were determined not to pay
the overpriced duties. On December
16 1773, hundreds of brave
American colonists raided British tea
ships and emptied more than three
hundred crates of quality tea
overboard into the vast ocean down
below. The British were enraged, and
stirred great anger between the two
colonies. . The raid was called the
Boston Tea Party.
Because of the Boston Tea Party,
The British parliament then started the
Intolerable acts. These are a series of
laws passed on by the British in 1774.
They were supposed to punish
Americans for throwing the tea into
the harbor. They also wanted to make
British authority much stronger. One
of the acts included “the Boston Port
Act” which closed the Boston Port. It
would only be reopened if the
Colonists paid for all of the tea and
showed more respect to the opposing

Boston is an amazing place
filled with both historic and
modern sites. It’s a great place
for kids because of all of the fun
parks and educational museum
like the Museum of Science. My
little sister liked the hands
on and interactive
activities like making
lightning and watching
life-size dinosaurs. The
restaurants and have
amazing seafood like a
place where I ate for
lunch called Royal
Seafood.
The clams
tasted like
they were
just pulled
out of the
salty
ocean.
They had
scrumptious crab cakes and
delicious salmon. For dessert,
my family and I went to a J.P
licks a homemade ice cream
shop and I got freezing ice
cream named after the Red Sox
players in a plastic red sox cap.
The next day I even went to the
crowded Fenway Park to see
the Red Sox win a baseball
game against Tampa Bay Rays.
It was a thrilling action-packed
trip and going to Boston is one
trip I will never forget.

Boston used to have a very little population.
This photo from 1899 shows how the streets used
to look. In this photo the city looks very historical
from an architectural point of view. Just looking
at the picture, you can already imagine the
clickety-clack of the horse drawn carriages
strolling along the old cobble stone road. There
are no cars or any other motorized vehicles as
the car had not been mass produced by this time
yet. If you look closely to the right you can see
the Park Street Station, an extremely old subway
station built in the 1800’s. This was one of the
first subway stations in America. The structures
are all very archaic. The windows of every tower
have an awning which keeps the sun from
coming in while still showing their goods to sell.

Now the street is filled with cars, vans and

other vehicles. The road is no longer made of
stone but concrete so the cars can drive more
smoothly. Instead of hearing the sound of
strolling carriages you would probably hear the
rumble of the engines. The Buildings have
become more modernized and the store owners
have gotten rid of the old awnings. Now there
are Street lights which make driving more
convenient. The Park Street Station is still evident
and the entrance has not changed at all of more
than 100 years.

This is Park Street Station which was the

second subway station in America. It opened in
1897 which was over 114 years ago! It came out
even before cars were invented. The cars were
probably moved while they were connected to
wires which kept the on the track. It connects to
some of the most famous landmarks in Boston.
Now the trains do not even have drivers and
they are powered completely electronically. The
subway was an important part of Boston’s
Landscape, and the Subway was a big success
for helping the city and its people.

New York’s Cities landscape has changed vastly over the
years, needing to attract more tourists every day. These two
pictures show New York before 9/11 and it after 9/11. After the
twin towers were destroyed in 2001 by terrorists, the 2 tallest skyscrapers in New York were gone forever.
The people of New York City never rebuilt the towers to show respect to over 3,000 that had died. In
memory of them they built a memorial center instead. They couldn’t decide what to build over what used
to be the twin towers, because for a long time they were still finding bodies, and at that moment in time it
was called “Ground Zero”. It is now a very controversial decision what to do over the land of the World
Trade Center.

When Henry Hudson first looked at New York in

1609 all he saw was a flat piece of land covered with
trees. Now if you were to look at New York Cities from
an airplane this is what you would see, skyscrapers

buildings, docks, houses, malls and many other

In 1898, a United States battleship, the

States blamed Spain for the explosion.
The United States declared war on
Spain. Spain gave up its rights in Cuba,

In July 1953, a young lawyer named
Fidel Castro tried to start a revolution
against Batista. He was captured and
put in prison. Castro was released in
1955 and led another unsuccessful
revolution in 1956. Then he and a small
group of followers hid in the mountains
of Cuba and organized a new rebel
group. People began to support
Castro's forces. On January 1st, 1959,
Castro took control of Cuba and set up
a strong Communist government.
Castro ruled Cuba until 2008, when
Raul Castro, his brother, succeeded him.
In the late 1700's and early 1800's,
sugar cane became Cuba's leading crop.
Sugar-cane growers of European
ancestry raised their crops on large
farms that depended heavily on human
labor. To provide cheap labor, growers
brought thousands of Africans to Cuba
and forced them to work as slaves.
