candidates can interpret data.

Data Sufficiency Section: A statement is given with other statement, the candidates have to answer whether the
given statement is enough to solve the problem or not.

Reading Comprehension and verbal ability section: It tests your knowledge in English grammar and English
language.
Includes:

Reasoning: Critical reasoning, Assumption premise conclusion, visual reasoning, assertion and reasons,
identifying valid inferences, statements and assumptions, identifying strong arguments and weak arguments,
cause and effects, statements and conclusion, identifying true and false statement, linear arrangements, matrix
arrangements, family tree problem, matrix arrangements, symbol based problems, sequencing, coding and
decoding problem, number series.

blanks, jumbled paragraphs, foreign language words used in English, sentence correction and completion, odd
man out, idioms, one word substitution, same word’s different usage, errors in word choice, incorrect words,

ommon Admission Test (CAT) is a countrywide test conducted for the admission to the IIMs (Indian
Institutes of Management), the optimum station for the desiring business managers searching a place in
the corporate world. There are many other good business schools (an almost exhaustive list of which
you can see in the top colleges under CAT list of our website.

Let us know more about the Indian Institutes of Management (the IIMs) now. There are seven IIMs
across the country in different cities – Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore and
Shillong.

CAT is the maiden stage of selection in the IIMs and most other premiere institutes of management in
India. Generally CAT comprises of questions that test the level of your quantitative efficiency,
vocabulary, general awareness, reasoning, analyzing data. It would not be incorrect to say that a CAT
paper is designed in such a way that an aspirant fairs only if (s)he has the managerial skills imbibed or
inherited! In addition to the performance in the CAT, there are many management institutes who
believe that fairing relatively good in the written test of a specified duration of two – three hours is not
sufficient judge a student’s real credentials. So a good weightage is given to the past academic record,
prior working experience if any and also any relevant curricular or extra-curricular activities.

Every year the most sought after examination that is the Common Admission Test comes up with a
surprise, say, for example, few years back there had been a time when there were no trend of negative
marking and the examinees were free to attempt as many as all questions – which could be guesses too!
But because of the cut-throat competition in the corporate world, the Common Admission Test is, now
an orthodox and staunch follower of negative marking, so beware and attempt the questions answers to
which you are dead sure!

As have already been said earlier about the surprises, 2009 is not an exception. On May 1, 2009, it was
announced that 2009 onwards, CAT will be a Computer Based Online Test, Parametric ETS being the
partner in conducting the test. Just like many other examinations like GMAT, GRE, IELTS, CAT also will be
held sitting on the computer at the assigned centre. CAT is held on the third Sunday of every November
each year. On November 27, 2009 more than 2 lacs students are expected to take the test, thereby
making it the world's most competitive and one of the most difficult examinations. Simply working hard,
burning yourself on fire will not get you to success in CAT any further now, you have to work smarter
now rather than work harder. Here at, you can practice several CAT patterned questions sitting home at
your computers. So there is no time for a dual thought, start being computer savvy so pressing the keys,
scrolling the mouse does not remain a hitch rather it has to be like any other habit for you.

For the Indian Institutes of Management and other equivalently optimum business schools,
or better say, for the CAT as a whole, the minimum academic eligibility criterion for
admission to the post graduate programmes in business management is at least a three-
year Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline with at least 50% (45% in case of
Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe / Physically disabled) from a recognized university. The
list of recognized universities, however, will be mentioned thoroughly in the CAT Application
brochure.

Students appearing for the final year of the qualification examination and those who have
completed degree requirement but are awaiting their respective results can also apply. Such
students, having scored some hopeful percentile and after qualified in the group discussion
and personal interview of their choicest business schools are provided admission subject to
the condition that they pass the qualifying examination (the Bachelor’s degree from a
recognized institute/university) with qualifying marks mentioned above. To your kind
knowledge, the students can, in no case, round off their marks to qualify for the CAT. The
CAT remains stubborn, so much so that if one scores 49.9%, (s)he cannot round it off by
0.1 % to make it 50%! Nevertheless, there is no age limit so far in the CAT. You can take
the CAT as many numbers of times as you can. In case there are gap years between taking
the CAT and any last degree you have attained, it is always recommended that you carry all
those details in written, including proofs of employment if any, alon with you at the time of
interview.

CAT Eligibility Criteria:

1. General Candidates: Atleast 50% or equivalent CGPA in graduation.

2. SC/ST Candidates: Atleast 45% or equivalent CGPA in graduation.

3. Final year students completing their graduation in year 2010.

CAT Test Paper Pattern and Format

There is no such conventional and defined test pattern for CAT. The CAT test can be in
various combinations like different sections both time-bound and unbound, depending upon
the degree of surprise they want to put you through! But the questions, absolutely, are
based on the areas testing your problem solving skills, data interpretation, reading
and analyzing comprehensionand verbal ability. Purposeful practice and extensive
preparation is all that is required to score handsome in the CAT. To add, you never know
whether you have that managerial skills in you, but the test is designed in a fashion so as to
broadly check through if you have that in you. Again there is no such score, percentage or
marks provided in your score-card. Your performance in CAT is relative to how your fellow-
examinees fair. Here comes a new term “Percentile” to our vocabulary as soon as we aspire
to be an MBA and sit for various tests for this. Percentile refers to your relative performance
as compared to the total number of students who took the same test with you, across the
country. For example, a 99 percentile would mean that the student is in the top 1 percent of
the crowd who took the CAT.

Has already been said that the CAT comes up with surprises every year to maintain its
competitive flavor. This year the CAT will be held online, that is, you sit on the computer at
the assigned test centre and write the answers on the system itself within a time bound.
Now in our country there are still many who do not know how to operate the computers –
this time CAT is going to be a big challenge for them all. So along with taking lessons of the
syllabus or the content it demands, you have to be a computer savvy! Or at least you ought
to get familiar with handling the mouse, pressing the keys so you can handle the online CAT
2009 without any hitch. But this is not the prerequisite for the CAT. A deserving student can
still crack it excellently, because such students see the stars out of the window and not the
bars of the window!
