Week 4 Assignment: Due at the end of Week 4.

Overview
Last week, you engaged in an analysis and wrote a report describing the use of
technology and information systems to enrich campus curriculum, enhance teaching and
learning, and generally integrate technology into our campus improvement plans to
effectively integrate technology and instructional leadership. Your analysis and report
should provide the necessary background for the Week 4 major assignment –
developing an action plan for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of
sources for informed campus decision making focusing on integrating technology,
instructional leadership, professional development and organizational leadership.
As a result of this week’s assignments, you will be able to:
• Examine and assess procedures for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a
variety of sources for informed decision making regarding the integration of
technology, instructional and organizational leadership (SBEC Principal
Competency 7 indicator);
• Design and apply skills for monitoring and evaluating change and making needed
adjustments to achieve the campus vision and goals, including the integration of
technology as described above (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator).
Both of these outcomes are elements of Domain II, Instructional Leadership.
In writing your Week 4 action plan, use your interviews, your readings, including campus
and district improvement plans as well as any technology plans, and your Week 3 report
to make sure the action plan:
• Identifies data gathering sources;
• Provides a description of an organizational chart describing decision making
responsibilities regarding the integration of technology from central office
personnel to campus leadership and staff;
• Describes comprehensive professional development activities to achieve your
action plan (this may utilize information from the previous three weeks of
readings and activities);
• Includes an evaluation plan to assess the progress and success of the action
plan.
Students will be asked to post their action plan on the Discussion Board and each
student must review and comment on at least one other action plan focusing on
organizational leadership designed to maximize the use of technology in data gathering
and decision making.
Submit your assignment by 11:59 PM on the seventh day of Week 4.

The following four parts to the Week 4 assignments should help you
complete an action plan that incorporates all four elements of the
assignment, including posting your action plan and commenting and
reflecting on the action plans shared by fellow students.
Week 4 Assignment, Part 1: Development of an organization chart
integrating technology
Using the campus and district improvement plans, and any suggested technology
improvements, develop an organization chart that includes the following:

• Identify by title or job description all personnel/stakeholders responsible for

integrating technology and instructional and organization leadership from the
district office to the campus and classroom;
• Provide a brief description of the role and responsibilities of all identified
personnel in your organizational chart;
• Discuss the role of the principal in making sure the organizational chart is
implemented and monitored.

INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY:

Superintendant and School Board create the vision. Assistant Superintendant of C&I
begins to implement the vision with the support of the Technology department.
They are responsible for the hardware, software and infrastructure of the district.
The Instructional Technology department is responsible for educational software,
licensing and on-going training. The Instructional Coaches are the support staff for
the campus level. The Campus Principal and Assistant principal are responsible for
their campus with the help of the SBDM teams and department heads.

Campus Principal then makes decisions based on campus level needs. Classroom
teachers implement technology into the classroom and continue on-going training to
ensure success.

Week 4 Assignment, Part 2: Professional Development Planning
Using the campus and district improvement plans, and any suggested technology
improvements, develop professional development activities that include the following:

• Reference analysis and lessons learned about the technology needs from the Week
3 report;
• Addresses professional development designed to improve the gathering, analysis
and use of data from a variety of sources;
• Includes professional development to improve decision making in the integration of
technology with instructional and organizational leadership.
In support of the Northwest Independent School District Vision and Mission, the district
will ensure that students, teachers and staff have access to and an understanding of,
technology-based tools, enabling them to gather, manage, analyze, evaluate, produce,
and present information. Instructional staff members will model the integration of
technology into all curricular areas. Departments will model the efficient use of
technology tools to improve district operations. Technology will be seamlessly
integrated with curriculum to ensure student acquisition of skills for researching,
managing and presenting information.

The district will provide organizational support for all aspects of technology integration.
The district will maintain and enhance a district-wide information sharing system (wide-
area network) that provides easy access to accurate, current information within the
district, community and beyond. Hardware and software that allows students to be
constructors of knowledge, enriches the curriculum, and ensures comparable access
district-wide will be provided. Sufficient technology support, both technical and
instructional, will be available to all campuses to ensure effective use of the system and
accompanying technology tools.

Staff development is a key element in ensuring the effective use of technology in

instruction and operations. NISD will continue to broaden the scope of the district-wide
technology training program, enabling staff to effectively utilize technology tools in all
areas to enhance learning. All categories of employees will be expected to participate in
technology staff development for enhanced skill development. Assistance will be
provided for instructional staff in the development of curriculum projects and model
teaching using technology. Technology training will focus on best practices in the
effective integration of educational technologies into the curriculum.
(taken from the NISD technology plan)

Technology Proficiency Plan:

Professional development is a key element in ensuring the effective use of technology in
instruction and operations. NISD will continue to broaden the scope of the district-wide
technology professional development program, enabling staff to effectively utilize
technology tools in all areas to enhance learning. All employee categories are expected
to be proficient in the use of technology to more efficiently accomplish tasks, integrate
technology into teaching and learning, and model uses of these resources.

Northwest ISD has embraced the motto “take the next step”. In doing so, the Northwest
ISD Technology Standards Review Committee (TSR) of teachers, librarians, counselors,
administrators, paraprofessionals, and nurses have each created a new model for
technology professional growth. A more relevant proficiency-based model has replaced
the previous technology requirement of twelve hours per year. In addition, this plan was
revised by the Technology Proficiency Review Committee in Spring 2006.

Using the Texas Education Agency’s expectation that all current educators must have
the same technology skills expected of middle school students, the committees
researched and created guidelines for all new and veteran teachers, librarians,
counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, and nurses.

Professional development for instructional technology is organized into levels. A variety

of methods are utilized (district technology training workshops, online handouts and
tutorials, just-in-time support, institutions of higher education, etc) to master skills
outlined for each level. As each level of proficiency is achieved, a certificate is awarded.

Teachers, librarians, counselors, administrators, nurses, and paraprofessionals have

one year from the hire date to achieve level one proficiency and three years from hire
date to achieve level three proficiency. Personnel employed prior to the 2006 school
year are provided five years to complete level three proficiency as indicated under the
previous plan.

The process for obtaining the different levels of proficiency includes self-assessment
checklists, demonstration practicum and assessment rubrics.

The district will continue to evaluate the comprehensive support system to meet the
needs of students and staff. This annual review will include hardware/software support
and staff development. Program assessments will be conducted annually. The district
will maintain a replacement plan to ensure the continued upgrading of technologies.
(taken from the NISD technology plan)

Professional Development:
Based on the StaR chart analysis continuing professional development is needed in the
area of Teacher Preparation and Development. The following will help keep teachers
current on technology implementation in Northwest ISD.

• Online lesson planning will be used by all teachers to ensure technology

integration in lesson plans.
• Technology tutorials will be created and/or updated for both teacher and
student use to suit the needs at all levels. (podcasts)
• Develop a vertical alignment of the Technology Application TEKS broken
down by curriculum strand and by grade levels.
• 100% of instructional staff will meet criteria for specific applications
assigned by curriculum strand and grade levels.
• Instructional Technology will develop and provide professional
development opportunities for integrating technology applications into the
curriculum.
• Teachers will be assigned software applications for which they will be
responsible in developing teacher proficiency for independent integration
by curriculum content and by grade level.
• Instructional Technology will provide individual technology
assistance/training on an “as needed” basis.
• Instructional Technology will provide opportunities for educators to further
the development of their technological abilities through provision of
additional resources.
• Instructional Technology will provide opportunities for educators to further
the development of their technological abilities through provision of
additional resources.
• Instructional Technology personnel who do no have homeroom class
responsibilities will proactively co-develop lessons and projects with
classroom teachers in order to ensure effective and timely integration of
technology tools into curricula.
• The district will offer professional development opportunities electronically
(distance learning opportunities).
• All campuses, teachers and specialists will display an informative website
linked to the District’s Internet site.
• The district will provide “Intel Teach to the Future” classes for all
instructional personnel.
• Instructional Technology will provide staff development opportunities for
all staff members before, during and after school hours.
• Instructional Technology Coach role to be established and refined with
input from key personnel. Roles would include professional development,
instructional staff support, technology proficiencies support, and
technology curricula development for TA TEKS.
• Create Online Video Training videos for software applications, new staff
training, etc.
• Implement a data disaster recovery system at designated site in case of
emergency.
• The district will continue to offer IPod academies for development of
podcasts for teachers and students.
• The district will offer continuous professional development in the CPS
system, wireless chalkboards, ELMO document cameras, Interwrite
software.
• The district will offer professional development for content areas with the
integration of middle school net books into the curriculum.
• Instructional Coaches will provide one on one instructional help for
teachers when implementing technology.
• The district will offer continuous professional development in the use of
Eduphoria (on-line lesson planning), Schoolwires (websites). AWARE
(data collecting systems), INOVA (data collecting system), and Thinking
Maps software.
Week 4 Assignment, Part 3: Evaluation Planning for Action Plan
The technology action plan integrating instructional an organizational leadership must
include evaluation components that provide measurable outcomes designed to address
the following:

• Uses data and other analysis from the Week 3 report, including using the campus
and district improvement plans, and local or state technology plans;
• Provides assessments and/or monitoring reports measuring professional
development designed to use technology to improve the gathering, analysis and use
of data from a variety of sources;
• Provides assessments and/or monitoring evaluating professional development to
improve decision making in the integration of technology with instructional and
organizational leadership.
In Northwest ISD, we have a secondary and elementary committee to assist in making
decisions about technology that includes campus representatives and district
administrative representatives as well as yearly technology survey that is used in
conjunction with the StaR chart results. I would continue to utilize these aspects already
in place along with the following:

• Review of StaR chart results for each campus.

• Informal interviews conducted once a semester by the technology

committee member from each campus.

• Use of Eduphoria tracking system for professional development

• Monitoring teacher lesson plans reflecting technology integration within

the classroom setting.

• Continue focused walk-throughs of content area classes and focus on

technology integration feedback as well as student engagement levels.

• Use PLC time to implement individual lessons and use feedback from
lesson to continue to improve content area integration

• Use of campus Blog to discuss the integration of technology and

concerns that have arisen while implementing the action plan.

I had a lengthy conversation with a SBDM team member and took our current plan and
added some of my own ideas about technology and the implementation.
(Action plan adapted from the current Northwest ISD Long Range Technology Plan 2008-2011)
Week 4 Assignment, Part 4: Posting your Action Report and Responding to
Other Students’ action plans
Using the discussion board and the blog that you have developed, please write and
post your action plan, and be sure to:

• Read and review at least two other action plans

• Respond to other action plans by posting your comments and reflections

The purpose of the action report is to provide you with recommended procedures for
gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of sources for informed campus
decision making focusing on the effective integration of technology in curriculum,
instruction, assessment and professional development. Students may wish to use
this action plan as one of your school improvement projects for your Electronic
Portfolio. You may also use the Week 3 and Week 4 assignments as campus
supervised hours for your internship logs. As indicated these two weeks fall under
Domain II, Instructional Leadership, and address elements of Competencies 4, 5 and
7.
