OF ENERGY

It is said that ENERGY is NEEDED in doing all our activities. And
it is evident by the following scenarios:

♥ Sustain life by providing LIGHT AND HEAT ENERGY from the

sun's radiation

♥ Enabling us to move around as a product of CHEMICAL

ENERGY from the food we eat

♥ Malnourished people are not expected to be STRONG and

ACTIVE

♥ Machines need OIL, GAS, AND HEAT to start and maintain their
USEFULNESS
Can you imagine ourselves using firewood for cooking and
heating our homes or traveling long distances by walking or
riding a horse?

Maybe some of you will answer YES and most of us will say NO.

All of our appliances are run by electricity. Electricity is

needed to maintain the standard of living and essential to run
industries. And because of these facts that we consider
ELECTRICAL ENERGY as one of the commodities necessary
nowadays.
NON-RENEWABLE AND LIMITED SOURCES:
♥ Fossil Fuels

♥ Coals

These are the main sources of energy and there will come a time
when these sources will run out. Another problem that has to be
resolve is the hazardous effects of the consumption of these sources
to our environment such as:
♥ Greenhouse Effect

♥ Acid Rain

♥ Pollution
RENEWABLE SOURCES:
♥ Sun
♥ Wind
♥ Water
♥ Biofuels – are fules from plants and animals. They do not add
to the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere.
The pyrolysis of biomass produces a mixture of 3 combustible
products from biomass:
♥ Coke

♥ Tar

♥ Gas
These can be used to turn turbines, fuel vehiclhes, engines and
cells for the generation of electricity.
However, to harness the enrgy from these sources numerous
devices and installations are required.

Nuclear energy and removable sources of energy are being

tapped as alternative sources of energy. The use of nuclear energy
however has been debatable because of possible leakage from
reactors and radioactive waste disposal.

WIND TURBINES are used to convert the kinetic energy of the

wind into mechanical energy to genrators to produce electricity.

A PHOTOVOLTAIC CELL is used to convert solar energy into

elctricity.

FALLING WATER is used to change kinetic energy of the water into

electricity.
According to the World Energy Council, it is estimated that new
renewable energy source will not be able to supply the energy
required in the year 2020.

For this reason, the World Energy Council has projected some
energy saving meaures.

Energy can be saved by improving the operation of technology in

improving the generation of electricity.
IN HOMES AND COMMUNITIES:

1. ENCOURAGE careful deign and installation of energy saving

lighting systems, installation of efficient appliances for heating,
cooling and refrigeration.

2. DISCOURAGE wasteful uses of energy such as having lights on

even when not needed, unregulated running water, improper use
of flat iron, computers, and other appliances.

3. Label information of operation efficiency and energy

consumption.
IN INDUSTRIES:

1. Electricity can be conserved by installation of efficient lighting

systems, pumps and electric motor.

2. REVIEW and IMPROVE housekeeping techniques.

3. Control equipment can improve efficiency of machines.

IN TRANSPORT:

1. Having massisve transport systems can conserve energy.

2. Fuel-cell powered cars use small amounts of gasoline or diesel.

With the pressure of depleting
resources and destruction of our
environment, ALL OF US, even as
STUDENTS can contribute in our little
way in the conservation of energy and
preservation of our environment.
Thank you for
listening!
