THE GOLDEN ALE! ALE!
April 18, 2006
Ansley Tuesday Afternoon Golf Tour (ATAG)
By: Don Nichols

It was another beautiful day and another tournament atmosphere, as a near record crowd of
twenty six players (record is twenty seven) assembled into seven teams for the third round of
the 2006 season to challenge for the golden ale. To accommodate the large field and insure the
match would be completed before dark, the first tee time was moved up to 4:51 pm. Eight players
arrived for the earlier tee time and drew numbers to make up the first two teams, while the other
teams were formed in accordance with the players order of arrival. Here’s how it shaped up:

Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4

Jon Carper Sherman Wade Henry Sawyer Bill Benning
Mike Gutt Tom Kisgen Ron Majors Russ Jobson
Frank Corrigan Scotty Greene Jim Williamson DonNichols
Richard Batelaan Tom Player Brooks Cowles Rick Eaton

partner participates with either the winning or losing team should his team place in either category

13 UNDER IS THE MAGIC NUMBER AGAIN! DRAW PARTNER BREAKS TIE!

For the third week in a row, the winning score was 13 under. This week the coveted prize was
won by the Team 7 threesome of Mike Gaddis and visitors George McCord and John Arnold
who were able to boost their 11 under score to 13 under by drawing “Lucky Frank” Corrigan
as their fourth partner, breaking a three way tie

SINGLE DIGITERS STRUGGLE! COMBINE FOR WORST ROUND IN ATAG

HISTORY!

The aforementioned benefactors were single digit handicappers Andy Tyber, Brad Reese, and
Bill Meagher who combined their admirable talents with respective scores of 41, 42, and 43, for
a best ball score of 3 over. Fortunately their score was improved to 1 over with the scores of their
draw partner “Unlucky Tom” Player who, unlike “Lucky Frank” was surprised to find himself
on the losing end. Nevertheless, the 1 over score now stands in the ATAG record book as the
worst round ever! Brad Reese, motorcycle racer extraordinaire and last year’s low gross
champion, lamented in a post round interview about the poor play and bad karma of his team and
as he departed was heard humming the tune of the current top 40 hit single, “Had A Bad Day”.

BERNHARDT’S 37 GRABS LOW GROSS!

Single digiter Jim Bernhardt, having recently returned from an anger management class, topped
the field with an impressive 37, narrowly edging out Rick Eaton and visitor John Arnold who
were only two over for the day’s round. Bernhardt and Kennon are now co-leaders in the
clubhouse for this prestigious award.

BENNING AND NICHOLS TIE FOR LOW NET! THREE WAY TIE FOR HIGH
GROSS!

Low net of the day was shared by Bill Benning (22) and Don Nichols (16) who each posted a
net 3 under in helping their team to finish one shot from first place. (Russ Jobson remains the
leader in the clubhouse with a net score of 4 under)

The ignominious High Gross award ended up in a four way tie between Richard Gilmore,
Sherman Wade, “Lucky Frank” Corrigan and “Unlucky Tom” Player, each of whom posted a
not so embarrassingly high score of 49.

JOHN ARNOLD HAS SHOT OF THE DAY! EAGLES # 5!

Shot of the day went to visitor John Arnold, standing in for older brother “Metro Marty”, for
his chip in on the par 5 hole number 5 for the first eagle of the year. There was some other good
golf played on this day as Jim Bernhardt came close to holing out three different approach
shots, Russ Jobson narrowly missed holing out his sand shot on # 7, Rick Eaton sank a long putt
for birdie, net eagle, on # 7, and Scotty Greene opened his round by blading his second shot on
number 1 right into the back of an unsuspecting squirrel. (The squirrel was not injured but
reportedly gave an icy stare to his assailant.)

BIRDIE CLUB ADMITS NEW MEMBERS!

There were six birdies on this day—two by Jim Bernhardt, and one each by Andy Tyber,
Brad Reese Rick Eaton, and Bill Meagher, with all but Tyber being admitted to the tweeter
club for the first time this season.
SILVER PLATINUM EAGLE CLUB HAS FIRST MEMBER!

The aforementioned John Arnold earned membership to the 2006 Silver Platinum Eagle Club
for his eagle on # 7. In 2005, Bill Meagher was the only member of this elite club, attesting to
this hallowed group’s stringent qualification standards.

OTHER TIDBITS
It was another pleasant evening on the porch as players waited for all seven teams to finish and
then had to wait a little longer for the draw partners scores to be incorporated into the two
threesome’s scores, giving everyone plenty of time to socialize and partake of the famed ATAG
camaraderie. Tom Kisgen re-told the old “timbuktu” joke and Nichols introduced two new jokes
that were well received, but for the most part most people engaged in different conversations at
different tables with several opting to partake of the fine cuisine of the Men’s Grill.

Not staying to dine was Brooks Cowles who left early to , in his words, “pecan crest a trout”,
causing raised eyebrows from several fellow players concerned that we might be seeing another
“metro sexual” in the making.

Making their debut appearance for the 2006 season were Jim Williamson, Sherman Wade,
Richard Gilmore, Mike Gutt, Jon Carper, and Bill Meagher. Meagher was heartily
welcomed by the Commissioner who then chastised him for not providing notice of his planned
attendance at what was an already packed gathering.

Doug Healy and Ollie Kennon were no shows after sending e-mails that they were coming. A
letter of reprimand has been placed in their files.

Team 3 members Henry Sawyer, Ron Majors, Jim Williamson, and Brooks Cowles were
fined for slow play, after backing up the field on # 7, resulting in three groups being on the same
hole with a fourth group finishing up on # 6 green and soon to head to the tee. Team 2 had
already cleared the hill on # 8 while Sawyer was contemplating his shot while standing in the
mud packed and dried up lake.

Andy Tyber and C. J. Young are headed to Ireland later this week to represent ATAG in
international competition. They are being funded by the ATAG fine pool with the understanding
that they will reimburse the kitty should they not bring home the trophy.

Finally, as most of you know, our popular assistant pro Chad Purgason is leaving Ansley at the
end of the month, penniless and jobless but with a PGA card in his pocket, to seek his fame and
fortune along the beaches of southern California. We will miss him. Fortunately, he has accepted
our invitation to play in next Tuesday’s match and plans are to use his score as a “wild card” for
any team that needs it. It will be a good opportunity to bid him adieu and wish him well.
