Western Sydney cycleways network Places of interest

Under the bicycle strategy Action for bikes – BikePlan 2010 the NSW Government has
committed $251 million to create, on average, 200km of cycleways across NSW per year.
All new RTA major road projects will have provision for
bicycles, with off-road cycleways created wherever possible.
By 2010 in metropolitan Sydney alone, 420km of major
off-road cycleways and 214 km of major links on residential
streets will be built.
The State Government’s aim is to ensure that cycling is a viable
form of transport as well as a recreation that many people of all
ages can enjoy.This is already being achieved through accessible,
safe cycling networks across NSW and by promoting the many
benefits of cycling to individuals and the community.
The Western Sydney cycleways network will be linked to
important destinations including employment and education
centres, retail areas and recreational venues. Innovative solutions
are being used to overcome problems such as the space
needed for cycleway connections. These include cycleways in
rail corridors and alternative use of current assets.
Below and right:The Western Sydney network development revives historic routes
as well as creating new ones. Examples are the new bridge built over James Ruse Drive
and the 19th Century Sydney Water aqueduct at Greystanes, both important links.

Cyclists along the Western Sydney network can visit
sites with interesting historical or environmental
features. These places are marked on the map overleaf.
Network links in Western Sydney:
1 Fairfield City Farm – a 40 hectare working farm.
Major employment centres such as Parramatta,
Liverpool and Wetherill Park. 2 Restoring the Waters program – conversion of
2.7km of concrete-lined channel into a natural stream.

6 Warali Wali Project along Prospect Creek Cycleway
is an Aboriginal history trail initiated to explore
the significance of the environment to the local
Darug Aboriginal Tribe through a series of interpretive
artworks and markers.
7 Prospect Reservoir – when completed in 1888,
this earth-clay core embankment was the largest
dam in Australia. Although no longer the main
dam in the water system, the reservoir continues
to supply Sydney with water. Extensive picnic
facilities at the reservoir are ideal for a great
family outing.
