Bearer Capability and Basic Service Code

! Bearer Capability (BC)


– defines requirements on the transmission medium needed for a
basic service
– ISDN BC:
! between network nodes
– GSM (PLMN) BC:
! between MSC/VLR Server and Mobile Station (User Equipment)
! contains data characteristics to the air interface

! BAsic Service Code (BASC):


– number, representing a type of service
– basic services can be Bearer or Tele-Services
– mobile subscribers can have subscription to basic services
– MSC/VLR Server can support basic services or not

Telecommunication Service Analysis,
Subscription Check and BC Negotiation
! Telecommunication Service Analysis (TSA)
– The TSA checks if a requested basic service is offered by the
network. The TSA defines the demands on the network for call
establishment.
– TSA is performed for all originating and terminating mobile calls.
Different TSA for: GSM single slot, GSM multi-slot, and UMTS
– A Compatibility Check is performed for mobile terminating calls to
ensure that the incoming call is compatible to the selected service
– some parameters of the BC can be changed as result of the TSA
! Subscription Check
– checks if the mobile subscriber is subscribed to the requested
service
! BC Negotiation
– BC parameters can be changed due to Mobile Station (User
Equipment) capabilities

BC Area Overview
• MABC (Mobile Telephony Analysis of Bearer Capabilities)
- responsible for the Bearer Capability and Basic Service Code handling
in MSC/VLR for GSM calls
• MUABC (UMTS Mobile Telephony Analysis of Bearer Capabilities)
- responsible for the Bearer Capability and Basic Service Code handling
in MSC/VLR for UMTS calls
- slave block of MABC
• MTECA (Mobile Telephony Telecommunication Service Analysis)
- stores TSA Data defined by the Operator
- performs TSA and Compatibility check when requested by M(U)ABC
• MTELA (Mobile Telephony Telecom. Service Analysis Administration)
- command handling block
- interface to the Operator
- administration of TSA data
