BMC Performance Manager Express Version 2.7.00 for Servers 7

New features in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux

Filtering of disk instances

You can now use a regular expression to specify which disks are monitored. Use this
feature to avoid creating a large number of instances in the Portal.

To include specific disk instances for monitoring, use the regular expression in the
Disk Include Regex configuration property of the specific UNIX OS application, for
example, Solaris or Linux. The egrep command is used for regular expression
evaluation; therefore, it should be present on the monitored element. The default
regular expression is ".*", which specifies all disk instances for monitoring.

In the following examples of how to use regular expressions to limit the disk
instances created for monitoring, the disk names are ssd1, ssd2... ssd2287, md0,
md1...md50:

■ If you want to monitor the first 100 disks (ssd0-ssd99), you would use the
following regular expression:

(^ssd[0-9] |^ssd[0-9][0-9]) [Spaces are very important because they play a part in the
search patterns]

■ If you want to monitor only disks starting with m, you would use the following
regular expression:

^m[a-z0-9]+

■ If you want to monitor a particular disk, you would enter ^diskname, followed by a
space. For example,

^ssd2284space

New application classes

This section lists the new application classes.

Network Interfaces application class

The Network application class includes the new child application class, Network
Interfaces. This application class displays all the instances of network interfaces
except the Loop Back interface. This sub-application class is currently supported only
on AIX and Solaris platforms.

For a list of the new parameters in the Network Interfaces application class, see
Table 2 on page 10.

New features in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux

Solaris Logical Domains application class

The Solaris Logical Domains (LDOM) application class has been added for this
release. This application class is loaded only if the element added is a primary
domain. If the element is not a primary domain, this application class does not appear
on the Portal.

NOTE
The monitoring user must have the ability to read LDOM configurations. The user must have
the solaris.ldoms.read privilege. This privilege is set in the /etc/user_attr file.

For a list of the new parameters in the Solaris LDOM application class, see Table 2 on
page 10.

Projects application class

The Projects application class is a child class of Zones and represents all instances of
active projects.

Resource Capping application class

The Resource Capping application class is a child class of Projects and is loaded only
when the project is capped.

NOTE
■ To monitor the Zones and their related parameters and application classes (the Projects
and Resource Capping application classes), set the following line in the /etc/user_attr file:

userName::::profiles=Zone Management;defaultpriv=all

Enter the userName for the monitoring user.

■ Various features, such as CPU cap for zones and projects, are added in different updates
of the Solaris 10 operating system. To monitor such features with BMC Performance
Manager Express for Servers - UNIX/Linux, ensure that the operating system you are
running supports these features.

Monitoring Large Zone Environments

If you are monitoring an environment that has more than 5 zones, each having 20
projects and each of them is resource-capped with the default collection and
reporting interval (that is, 5 minutes), then there might be gaps in reporting the data
points. Alarms and warnings may be delayed.

As a workaround for this issue, increase the default collection and reporting interval.
Remember that monitoring performance is directly proportional to the number of
zones to be monitored, the number of active projects in each zone, and capping
assigned to each project.

UNIX/Linux upgrade issue
The “Using rstatd” application classes of version 2.3 and earlier are no longer
supported. During an upgrade to 2.7, all instances of the “Using rstatd” application
classes are removed from the Portal and RSM along with any associated historical
data.

The “Using SNMP” application classes of version 2.5 and earlier are no longer
supported. During an upgrade to 2.7, all instances of the “Using SNMP” application
classes are removed from the Portal and RSM along with any associated historical
data.

Open issues in BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Log Management

Monitoring very active log files issue

If you are monitoring log files that grow by more than the default read limit of 1,000
lines (UNIX) or 98,304 bytes (Windows) during one collection cycle, two issues can
occur:

■ If your log files are growing faster than the default read limit during a collection
cycle, alarms and warning for matched search strings may be delayed.

■ If your log files are growing faster than the default read limit during a collection
cycle and you set Only Monitor Latest File to true, then some log file lines may be
skipped when monitoring transitions from the current log file to the new log file.

You can prevent these problem by performing a procedure documented in the Help
topic “Adjusting the read limit.” Use this procedure to increase the read limit on the
RSM computer.

Setting thresholds for discovered log file instances

During initial configuration, you cannot configure parameter thresholds for
discovered log file instances. Instead, you can configure them after initial
configuration using the following instructions.

1 In the navigation pane on the left side of the Portal page, click the configured Log
application under the Log Management.

2 Click the Configure tab.

3 Click the Edit button and scroll down to the parameter thresholds that you want to
change.

This changes the threshold for all newly discovered log files. To change thresholds for
a specific discovered log, click on the discovered log to change its thresholds.

BMC Performance Manager Express for Log Management

upgrade issues
When upgrading the Log Management application class from version 2.3.00 to
version 2.6.00 or 2.6.30, the following upgrade issues can occur:

■ For elements that have multiple rules defined, after upgrading, the parameter
history for all Rule instances is migrated under one rule.

■ Descriptive label for rules after the upgrade are Rule # 1, Rule # 2, Rule # 3, and so
forth, rather than the original text.

BMC Performance Manager Express Version 2.7.00 for Servers 17

Corrected problems

■ Descriptive label for logs after the upgrade are Log Management Group # 1, Log
Management Group # 2 and Log Management Group # 3, and so forth, rather than
the original text. The order in which the new labels are numbered appears random.

■ Because the Log Management application class structure has changed in version
2.4.00 and later, instance labels have changed to include the path and file name for
the log.

■ By default, in version 2.6, the Matched Content parameter has an enabled warning
with “.+” in the Regex field on the Thresholds settings page. During upgrade from
an earlier version, the Regex field is cleared but the warning is still enabled. This
problem results in false warnings.

■ When upgrading to 2.6 on non-English platforms, the top-level Log Management

instance label and Rule instance labels appear in English only and the path
separator appears incorrectly.

Corrected problems
Problems that were reported in earlier releases of BMC Performance Manager
Express and have been corrected in this release are listed in Table 7:

Table 7 Corrected problems

BMC Performance Manager Express for Servers - Windows
QM001567172 When monitoring Windows servers using WMI with slow connections, the

QM001528039 In AIX - Using Command Shell, the SWAP parameters reported a value of
zero when the collector could not collect the data because the application
class was not configured with the root account credentials. This condition
caused false alarms.
