ART FAIR TOKYO 2011 Related-Events:Talk Series

ART FAIR TOKYO Committee is pleased to announce the details on talk series of ART FAIR TOKYO 2011 Related-Events.

1. “Dialogue in Art”
In 2011, several talk sessions and a symposium will be held to explore the potential of art in relation to the themes of ‘leisure’ and

‘creativity’. The discussion will cover art in Asia, which has sought out new possibilities in line with the current tendency for

enhanced crossover between different genres and also the remarkable progress of technology. We will also investigate the creativity

of art collectors, who have taken on an important role in the art world of the 21 century, and also explore the ways to develop an

appreciation of art that transcends the conventional categories of "traditional" and "contemporary".

Dialogue in Art 1: Art from the Perspective of Asians Living in the First Decade of the 21 Century

Since the first decade of the 21 century, the world has been impressed by the remarkable growth of the art scene in Asia. Through
enhanced intellectual exchange between Asian countries, the emerging generation has started to build up new networks within the
Asian region. In this talk session, we discuss the Asian art scene of the future, where people will be able to exchange information,
knowledge, and the latest trends through those networks.

[Dialogue in Art 1 Speakers’ Profiles]
Hu Fang Artistic Director of Vitamin Creative Space (Guangzhou) / The Pavilion (Beijing), Fiction Writer
Hu Fang was born in 1970 in China. Hu is co-founder and artistic director of Vitamin Creative Space in
Guangzhou and The Pavilion in Beijing. Within the contemporary art context, his daily practices focus on the
process of initiating diverse spacial models to open up new possibilities of “species of spaces”, basing on intensive
dialogues and collaborations with artists and through the negotiations of independence within the Chinese context.
He has been involved in various international art projects including documenta 12 magazines in 2007 as

Photo by Michael Eddy coordinating editor and YOKOHAMA TRIENNALE 2008 as co-curator. Writing fiction parallels his practices and
his recent novel Garden of Mirrored Flowers is co-published by Sternberg Press and Vitamin. He is currently
based in Guangzhou and Beijing.

ホン・ボラ Bora Hong Director, Gallery FACTORY (Seoul)


Bora Hong was born in 1972 in Busan, South Korea and is currently based in Seoul. After graduating with an
M.A. in Arts Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she has been involved in various art
and design exhibitions as well as public art projects as commissioner or director. Hong started a
multi-disciplinary art space, Gallery FACTORY, in 2002 with the aim of supporting young and upcoming artists
through various exhibitions held at the space and audience participation programs. She has also lectured on
exhibition planning and art marketing at several universities including Ewha Women’s University (Seoul) and
Seoul National University.

Dialogue in Art 2: The Era of the Art Collector


In this talk session, we highlight the creativity of art collectors. Recently, art collectors have taken on an important and influential role
in the art world. Their unique collections, each shaped by their unique perspectives, sometimes dominate museum exhibitions. How
do such collectors approach the art world? We discuss how art collectors support art – how, in fact, their support has become
essential.

[Dialogue in Art 2: Speakers’ Profiles]
Rudy Tseng Art collector (Taipei)
Rudy Tseng was born in 1959 in Taipei. He is now a full-time art collector based in Taipei. His collection started 15
years ago initially with modern art. His interest in the YBAs (Young British Artists) sparked further interests in Asian art,
including that from China and Japan, as well as European and American contemporary art. Tseng’s previous job was
Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company (Taiwan). His 17 years of experience in the movie industry - and the
chance that it provided to watch countless films - allowed him to have a profound interest towards video art. He has
lectured at the Shieh Chien University Graduate Institute of Visual Media (Taiwan) and has been engaged actively in
the contemporary art scene by attending major biennales and art fairs. He is also an international member of the Mori
Art Museum (Tokyo).

Daisuke Miyatsu Art collector (Tokyo)


Daisuke Miyatsu was born in 1963 in Tokyo. The first artwork that he purchased was by Yayoi Kusama in 1994 and
since then he has continued to collect works by her as well as by artists of his own generation. In 1999, in
collaboration with Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Shimabuku, Miyatsu started a project called the Dream House,
which he currently resides and which is still a work-in-progress. His collection was showcased at Tokyo Opera City Art
Gallery in the exhibition, Why not live for Art? (2004) and at the DELIM CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM’s Collection
2 -Collector's Choice- (Seoul, 2007). Miyatsu has recently published Gendai-art wo kaou! (How to create an art
collection), Shueisha Shinsho and has been part of several talk events at museums and art fairs. He currently works at
(C)2010 Yoko Asakai a Tokyo-based company.

Mami Kataoka Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum
Chief Curator at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery from 1998 to 2002 and Arts and Culture project researcher at the
Urban Development Department, NLI Research Institute from 1992 to1997. Assumed current position in January, 2003.
Served concurrently as International Curator at Hayward Gallery from 2007 to 2009. Exhibitions curated at the Mori Art
Museum include “Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art 2004” (2004), “Ozawa Tsuyoshi:
Answer with Yes and No!” (2004), “All About Laughter” (2006), “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” (2009), and “Sensing
Nature” (2010). Born in 1965.

Dialogue in Art 3: Leisure and Art in Ginza
After the war, Ginza became the center of art in Japan and a popular place for those who loved art and also leisure to gather. At this
talk, we welcome guests who love both Ginza and art, and will explore the many possibilities that Ginza still offers for art
appreciation, leisure and style, and also some of the new arts-related projects that are still emerging there despite the passing of
many decades.

Yoko Noro Vice-President, Ginza Yanagi Gallery
After graduating from the Keio University’s Department of Science and Engineering Yoko Noro worked for IBM. After she
married Yoshihiko Noro, she left the corporation to co-found Yanagi Gallery with him. As Vice-President, Noro is
currently focused on marketing and organizing seminars. She also publishes her weekly column on the gallery website
(on Saturdays). (http://blog.yanagi.com/) She is a member of the New Rotary Club of Tokyo-Chuo.

Hozu Yamamoto Director, Tokyo Gallery + BTAP


The first-born son of Takashi Yamamoto, the founder of Tokyo Gallery, which was the very first contemporary art gallery
established in Japan. After graduating with a degree in architecture from the College of Arts and Design of Musashino
Art University, he served as a secretary to a member of the House of Councilors. Entered Tokyo Gallery in 1981 and
assumed current position in 1996. His younger brother, Yukihito Tabata opened a new space, BTAP, in the now
world-renowned Beijing 798 Art District. Tokyo Gallery + BTAP continues to promote the contemporary art of East Asia,
mainly that of Tokyo and Beijing. Also actively involved in numerous projects for the rediscovery of Japanese classical
representation, the development of Ginza, and much more. Member of the ART FAIR TOKYO Art Committee.

Arata Watamane Owner, ICHIBANKAN TAILOR co., ltd


Born in 1966. After graduating from the Faculty of Law, Keio University, entered The London Institute Central Saint
Martins College of Art and Design in the U.K. and Domus Academy in Italy to study dressmaking. Worked at
Ermenegildo Zegna in Italy before entering ICHIBANKAN TAILOR co., ltd. in 1994 and being promoted to the position of
representative director. ICHIBANKAN TAILOR co., ltd. was established in 1930, has many customers inside and outside
Japan and has imported fabric materials from the U.K. for 80 years.

Dialogue in Art 4: Art from East to West and Old to New
The tradition and the spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony, incorporating the hanging scroll and the arranged flowers in the tokonoma

(‘alcove’), have been carried on and are appreciated in contemporary society today. Pieces of contemporary art can be incorporated

into that tradition in such a way as to create a contemporary form of tea ceremony. We discuss the traditional culture of tea

ceremony and the experimental spirit with which old and new can be brought together.

Nagamitsu Yamada IEMOTO, WABISUKIDO-NAGAMITSU-RYU
Established WABISUKIDO to help next-generation leaders in Japan and elsewhere understand a sense of value and
gain strength by harmonizing art, fashion, architecture, design, music, technology and SADOU (tea ceremony)/ZEN.
The 11th IEMOTO for SADOU SOUHEN-RYU.

Tetsuya Ozaki Publisher / Editor-in-Chief, "REALTOKYO" "REALKYOTO"


Born in 1955, Tokyo. Participated in the first issue of “03 TOKYO Calling” (SHINCHOSHA Publishing Co.,Ltd), culture
information magazine as a vice-editor-in-chief in 1989. Established Tetsuya Ozaki Office in 1994 and edited the
CD-ROM book "Multimedia KABUKI", Aichi Expo themed magazine "Kukunochi", photograph book "ONE HUNDRED
YEARS OF IDIOCY" and others. Issued bilingual culture web magazine “REALTOKYO” in 1999, art magazine “ART iT”
in 2003 and “REALKYOTO” in 2007. Resigned ART iT in 2010. Guest Professor, Kyoto University of Art and Design.

Yokohama Triennale 2011: What it seeks to explore
In recent years, international art exhibitions have attracted much interest across Japan, and have proven to be extremely popular

with visitors. Yokohama Triennale, a pioneer of its kind in Japan, will be held for the fourth time this summer.

This talk, moderated by former deputy editor of Brutus magazine Yoshio Suzuki, will explore the theme of this year’s edition with

invited guests Eriko Osaka, director general for Yokohama Triennale 2011, and participating artist Tadanori Yokoo, and touch on the

particular highlights of the exhibition.

[Special Talk Session Speakers’ Profiles]


Eriko Osaka Director General, Yokohama Triennale 2011 / Director, Yokohama Museum of Art
She has previously organized and curated many exhibitions of contemporary art in an international context while at the
Japan Foundation and ICA, Nagoya. She worked at the Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito as senior curator
(1994-1997) and artistic director (1997-2006) as well as the Mori Art Museum as artistic director (2007-2009) before
assuming her position as director of the Yokohama Art Museum. Osaka has a wealth of experience working for
international exhibitions as commissioner for the Japan Pavilion at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001) and numerous
other events. She received her BFA from Gakushuin University.

Tadanori Yokoo Artist
Held a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1972. Since then, he has been invited to participate
in biennial exhibitions in Paris, Venice, São Paolo and various other cities around the world. Yokoo frequently exhibits
his work outside of Japan, including a solo exhibition at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris in 2006. In
recent years he has held a string of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the National
Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, and the National
Museum of Art in Osaka. Yokoo currently works in a wide, cross-disciplinary range of artistic media including painting,
photography and novels. He was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1936.

Yoshio Suzuki Editor / Lecturer
Born in 1958 in Tokyo. Graduated with a BA in Political Science from the Faculty of Law, Keio University. After working
in the editorial departments of magazines an・an and POPEYE at MAGAZINEHOUSE CO., LTD., served as a Deputy
Editor of Brutus for ten years. While at Brutus, took charge of features relating to art, architecture, design, books, films
and food. Major features included “Nara Yoshitomo, Murakami Takashi ha sekai gengo da” “Sugimoto Hiroshi wo
shitteimasuka?” “Jyakuchu wo mitaka?” “Kokuhou tte nani?” “Kinkyu Tokushu Inoue Takehiko”, and “Butsuzou”.
