2010 Aircraft Donations of a 1981 L-39 Aero Vodochody Jet Trainer. John said, “It is a nice
flying machine that I bought from the Ukraine about 5 years ago,
painted it and put in American instruments.” It was manufactured
by Aero Vodochody in Prague, Czech Republic, for the Warsaw
Pact Countries. It was one of 2800 that was produced to military
standards, fully aerobatic and serves as an advanced trainer for
future fighter pilots, including weapon delivery practicing, as well
as for light attack tasks. The aircraft is a low-wing, tandem seating, all
metal turbofan powered aircraft. Please visit the museum this summer for a special
reception of John Huls’ L-39.
The Fargo Air Museum is honored to accept Ed Newberg’s donation of a Polish
Iskra jet. Ed Newberg purchased one of the 12 Polish Iskra jets that came in to
the country via Carlsbad, NM. He had it shipped to Olivia, MN and went to jet
training in Alabama. He said he enjoyed going to air shows and various fly-in’s
for several years until he got a Del Monte contract and ran out of time during
flying season. He knew the museum enjoyed different aircraft and was always
in the market for something unique and officially donated the aircraft in

Meet & Greet with
Boy Scout Andrew P. Nelson of Troop 635 coordinated the efforts to update
the Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Wall with over 2000 fallen soldier’s
names to be posted on the wall. He coordinated the efforts with MSUM
intern Beth Altoff to create the procedures. Andrew successfully completed
his mission and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. His positive “can do”
attitude was infectious for all to be around.

WWII Veteran Chuck Rustvold worked with the
B-17’s in the 8th Air Force. He was a “spark plug” man who worked on
and cleaned the B-17’s. His 1st plane ride was a B-17 in England. We were
honored to have him take another ride courtesy of the Fargo Air Museum.

One summer morning Eleanor, a retired elementary teacher from Kenmare, ND, was visiting her daughter in
Wahpeton. She happened to watch the Valley News Live TV interview between Steve Poitras and B-17 pilot
Duane Nelson. She wondered if it could possibly be the same Duane Nelson from Kenmare she had taught in
the second grade. In her mind she knew it just had to be. So Eleanor and her
daughter made a special trip to the museum to coordinate an early morning
surprise visit for Eleanor and her former student.
What a glorious reunion some 60 years later!

The Movement of the Wright Flyer
The movement of the EAA Wright Flyer from the northwest corner to the east central area was no small task
for a group of EAA members and volunteers at the museum on the last Friday night of October. With all
hands on deck, the team gently brought the Wright to the floor for a thorough cleaning and remounted it to
the new area. The new area provides a greater opportunity to showcase the engineering and design of the
flyer from the second floor. As part of the activities, Bob Miller provided a brief history of the Wright flyer
during the pizza dinner. The chief curator from Kitty Hawk still states it is the best Wright flyer replica in the
world that he has seen.
