INTRODUÇÃO
Ao estudar inglês, geralmente, tem-se a impressão de que essa língua

apresenta uma ortografia com pouca ou nenhuma regularidade,
situação que se torna ainda mais dramática se levarmos em conta as
suas diversas variantes e os inúmeros empréstimos de outros
idiomas. Essa concepção, no entanto, é falsa. O inglês apresenta
bastante regularidade em sua escrita, o que, na maioria dos casos,
possibilita a leitura de uma palavra desconhecida sem que nunca se
tenha ouvido a sua pronúncia.
Com efeito, as regras ortográficas do inglês são mais complexas do
que as da maioria das línguas bem conhecidas, havendo também um
bom número de exceções. Contudo, isso não invalida o proveito que
se pode conseguir ao estudar as regularidades existentes na sua
ortografia.
Este breve manual tem o objetivo de auxiliar os alunos de ensino
fundamental, médio e superior que têm dificuldades para associar a
palavra escrita à pronúncia do inglês. Intenta-se apresentar, em um
período de uma semana, as mais importantes regras ortográficas do
idioma e fornecer exercícios de leitura e de pronúncia, para que o
aluno possa aplicar o que estudou. Neste material, confere-se grande
ênfase às exceções, irregularidades e anomalias ortográficas, com o
intuito de possibilitar ao aluno que identifique facilmente as escritas
aberrantes e suas respectivas pronúncias e, por conseguinte, consiga
também depreender e aplicar as regras ortográficas gerais e
decodificar as palavras com escrita regular. Desse modo, espera-se
que o aprendente atinja independência e segurança para decidir a
pronúncia correta de um vocábulo sem que, a todo momento, precise
recorrer a áudio ou consultar dicionários. Por esse motivo,
propositalmente, omitiu-se a transcrição fonética da maior parte das
palavras, restringindo-a à indicação da pronúncia de exceções.
Embora haja variação entre a pronúncia nos diversos países de língua
inglesa, para evitar que este manual se torne demasiadamente
extenso, esta obra se restringe ao inglês britânico, havendo, contudo,
menções de diferenças no inglês americano quando elas são
relevantes.
Neste livro, evitou-se, ao máximo possível, o uso de termos técnicos
complexos ou desconhecidos e, quando isso se fez necessário,
procurou-se explicar detalhadamente o termo, de modo a não deixar
dúvidas ao aluno.
Poder-se-ia argumentar que muitas das palavras com ortografia
exótica ou anômala que são apresentadas no decorrer da obra são
estrangeirismos ou, então, palavras arcaicas ou de uso restrito.
Contudo, ocorre que, justamente as palavras com a escrita mais
esdrúxula são, paradoxalmente, as mais usadas no cotidiano, mesmo
na linguagem coloquial. Esse fato justifica a inclusão de toda e
qualquer irregularidade, para prover domínio pleno da ortografia da
língua inglesa.
Ao final deste breve curso de ortografia aplicada à pronúncia, espera-
se que o aluno esteja familiarizado com as peculiaridades do sistema
ortográfico da língua inglesa, com o seu inventário de fonemas e com
as exceções em geral, para que, assim, tenha independência e
confiança para falar, ler e escrever em inglês com correção,
desembaraço e desenvoltura.
O livro está dividido em sete capítulos: de acordo com a proposta do

livro, cada um corresponde a um dia. Neles, são apresentados os
seguintes conteúdos, nesta ordem: alfabeto e sons do inglês, regras
ortográficas gerais, pronúncias de vogais, de grupos vocálicos, de
consoantes e de grupos consonantais e, por fim, acentuação
fonológica. Ao final, há um apêndice com verbos, substantivos e
adjetivos que têm flexões irregulares.
Alguns dos poucos requisitos para usar com eficiência esta obra são:
dominar, minimamente, a língua inglesa, conhecer, basicamente, o
Alfabeto Fonético Internacional (IPA), e ter acesso a um dicionário.
Para facilitar a consulta e a identificação do tópico de interesse a que
se alude, o livro traz auxílios visuais: em azul e negrito, marcam-se
as letras consideradas na pronúncia, em vermelho e itálico, as letras
que não são pronunciadas, e, em verde, negrito e sublinhado, a
vogal da sílaba tônica. Ademais, antes de cada fonema ou grafema,
discrimina-se a sua frequência de ocorrência, do seguinte modo: com
o termo COMUM em azul, marca-se o fonema ou a forma de escrita
recorrente, com o termo RARO em verde, identifica-se o fonema ou a
forma de escrita incomum ou exótica, e, com o termo ANÔMALO,
assinala-se o fonema ou a forma de escrita totalmente esdrúxula ou
usada uma única vez.
É possível que, num primeiro momento, o aluno não consiga gravar
todas as pronúncias, visto que os padrões ortográficos do inglês são
muito numerosos. Nesses casos, orienta-se que a leitura dos capítulos
seja feita repetidamente, até que se tenha segurança e certeza quanto
à pronúncia de todas as palavras.
O alfabeto usado para a língua inglesa é composto por vinte e seis

letras, as mesmas do português. Na sequência, apresentam-se as
letras do alfabeto em sua forma maiúscula e minúscula, com a
pronúncia aproximada de seus nomes entre parênteses, bem como
algumas palavras simples que começam com cada letra:

Embora as letras usadas no inglês sejam as mesmas do português,

em muitos casos, elas representam sons diferentes, formam
combinações distintas e apresentam uma distribuição incomum, se
comparadas ao nosso idioma. Isso leva a uma falsa ideia de que a
ortografia do inglês é caótica e praticamente sem regras. No entanto,
depois de uma breve análise, na maioria dos casos, é possível
estabelecer uma relação entre a escrita e a pronúncia das palavras.
Uma das características marcantes do inglês é a redução de vogais
em sílaba átona, ou seja, as vogais que são pronunciadas com menor
intensidade se enfraquecem de tal modo, que se diferem radicalmente
daquelas em sílaba tônica. Essa característica é extremamente
importante e auxilia a perceber as regularidades na pronúncia do
inglês. A respeito disso, comparem-se as vogais marcadas nos
exemplos a seguir:

Além dessas características, o inglês apresenta um grande conjunto

de pares distintivos formados por consoantes surdas e sonoras: cap –
gap, coal – goal, coat – goat, cold – gold; fan – van, fat – vat, file –
vile, fine – vine; park – bark, pay – bay, peg – beg, pig – big, pin –
bin, pit – bit; sap – zap, seal – zeal, sink – zink, sip – zip; cheek –
geek, choke – joke; bet – bed, hat – had, ten – den, tie – die, tin –
din, tip – dip, town – down, tune – dune.
Os fonemas do inglês Os fonemas são os sons efetivamente

utilizados numa língua. O inglês apresenta uma quantidade de
fonemas substancialmente maior se comparado ao português, pois
dispõe de 45 fonemas, dos quais 20 são vogais e 25 são consoantes.
Essa grande quantidade de fonemas é representada por apenas 26
letras do alfabeto e/ou por combinações delas, havendo mais de 200
representações gráficas para eles.
Primeiramente, são apresentadas as vogais do inglês, pois elas
causam maiores dificuldades aos falantes de português que estudam
a língua:

Algumas das vogais do inglês são tão próximas que quase não podem
ser distinguidas. Nesses casos, é necessário treinar até conseguir
pronunciar e distinguir, com perfeição, cada uma delas.
A seguir, é explicada a pronúncia de cada vogal existente no inglês:
a: como o <a> em “lá”.
ɑ: sem equivalência no português: é formado como o
<a> de “fato”, mas com os lábios fechados, como se se
pronunciasse o <ó> de “pó”.
ɒ: sem equivalência no português: semelhante ao <ó>
de “pó”, mas com os lábios mais fechados.
æ: sem equivalência no português: é um fonema entre o
<a> de “pato” e o <é> de “fé”.
ɛ: como o <é> em “pé”.
ɜ: sem equivalência no português: é formado como se se
pronunciasse o <â> de “âmbar”, sem nasalização,
aproximando-o ao som de <é> em “fé”.
ə: sem equivalência no português: esse fonema se
assemelha ao <â> de “câmara”, sem nasalização.
o: como o <o> em “hoje”.
ʌ: sem equivalência no português: é formado como o
<ó> de “só”, mas com os lábios abertos, como se se
pronunciasse o <é> de “pé”.
ɔ: como o <ó> em “pó”.
e: como o <e> em “vejo”.
ɪ: sem equivalência no português: é um fonema entre o
<e> de “lê” e o de “ripa”.
ʊ: sem equivalência no português: é um fonema entre o
<o> de “sovar” e o de “luta”.

u: como o em “tudo”.
Os fonemas apresentados acima nem sempre vem isolados, pois

formam ditongos e, às vezes, também prolongam a sua pronúncia.
Por esse motivo, abaixo são apresentadas as vogais e ditongos, de
fato, utilizados no inglês:

dificuldades para falantes de português, visto que a maioria delas
existe em nossa língua. A tabela abaixo apresenta todas as

É importante lembrar que, em inglês, há muito mais fonemas do que

letras e, por esse motivo, algumas letras servem para representar
mais de um som. Às vezes, ocorre também que um som é
representado por duas ou mais letras diferentes, ou ainda por um ou
mais grupos de letras.

com diversos exemplos. Embora essas regras não expliquem a
totalidade dos casos, conhecê-las e dominá-las confere grande
vantagem ao aluno, pois permitem prever a pronúncia de um grande
número de vocábulos, auxiliam na conversão escrita da palavra
falada, melhoram a compreensão auditiva e tornam mais eficiente e
precisa a pronúncia em geral.
As maiores dificuldades de falantes do português ao aprender

inglês Ao aprender inglês, os falantes de português costumam
esbarrar em algumas dificuldades bastante pontuais. A maior delas se
refere a fonemas que não existem no português e que, muitas vezes,
apresentam muita semelhança fonológica entre eles:

É importante observar que os termos vogal longa e breve nem sempre

se referem à duração da vogal e, especificamente no caso das vogais
longas, o termo engloba também ditongos. Além disso, as vogais
longas se referem à pronúncia como o nome da vogal no alfabeto, e o
termo vogal breve se refere a uma pronúncia completamente distinta
do nome da letra.
Vogais breves a) As vogais breves encontram-se em sílabas

fechadas, isto é, que terminam em consoante: hat, pen, get, gift, not,
gut, but, nymph. Em sílabas fechadas átonas, ocorre, adicionalmente,
um enfraquecimento da vogal: wisdom, about.
b) As vogais breves costumam ocorrer em palavras monossilábicas,
usualmente com as seguintes estruturas silábicas:
a) consoante – vogal – consoante: sad, sit, bet, let,
hut, gym, lot;
b) vogal – consoante: at, on, it, if, is, us, up;
c) consoante – consoante – vogal – consoante: trap,
glad, trash, thresh;
d) consoante – vogal – consoante – consoante: gift,
lift, loft, nymph, theft;
e) consoante – consoante – vogal – consoante –
consoante: slant, trump, stomp.
c) Essas regras valem também para sílabas fechadas em palavras

com duas ou mais sílabas: craggy, thicker, nothing, burning.
c) Vale lembrar que, no inglês britânico, depois de <a>, a sequência

<ss> ou <s+consoante diferente> faz a vogal ser pronunciada longa
como ɑː: grass, last, fast, glass. No inglês americano, por sua vez, a
vogal é pronunciada breve como æ.
d) Além disso, se, na estrutura consoante – vogal – consoante, as

vogais <a> e <o> forem seguidas pelas combinações <ll> ou
<l+consoante diferente>, essas vogais costumam ser pronunciadas
longas como ɔː e əʊ, respectivamente: hall, small, tall, chalk, talk,
walk; boll, roll, poll, toll, troll, folk, molt.
e) As vogais breves ocorrem também no final de polissílabos com a

sílaba final átona: epitome, goodly.
f) Se, em palavras com duas ou mais sílabas, em que há um <e> final,

a primeira vogal é breve, a consoante deve ser duplicada para impedir
que o <e> indique o alongamento da vogal: matter, bitter, hopper.
g) Se houver, no final de uma palavra monossilábica, um <e> mudo

precedido por duas ou mais consoantes, a vogal anterior é
pronunciada breve: hence, dance, since, else.
h) Se houver as terminações -ed, -ing, -er, -est, a consoante simples
que segue a vogal breve deve ser duplicada para indicar a pronúncia
breve da primeira vogal, especialmente em palavras monossilábicas:
hop > hopper, cut > cutter, trek > trekking, run > running, drop >
dropped.
i) Se a antepenúltima sílaba de uma palavra for tônica, a vogal dessa

sílaba é pronunciada breve: modestly, legacy. Apenas o se
esquiva dessa regra: lunacy, tubulous, puberty.
j) Em sílabas átonas, usualmente, as vogais são breves: edification,

parabolically.
k) No final de uma palavra com duas ou mais sílabas, em que a última

sílaba é átona, o <y> é pronunciado i: floppy.
Vogais longas a) No inglês, as vogais longas ocorrem normalmente

em sílabas abertas, isto é, que terminam em vogal: no, good, show.
b) As vogais longas pronunciam o nome das letras. Para indicar as

vogais longas, geralmente são usadas duas vogais, em que a
segunda não é pronunciada.
c) Há duas formas de representar as vogais longas: ou escrevendo a

vogal dupla, ou usando a vogal <e> depois da sequência consoante
+ vogal simples.

simples também são pronunciadas longas: me, I, so.
e) A regra da vogal longa também vale para sílabas abertas, isto é,

que terminam em vogal: nation, ego, pilot, holy, music.
f) O <e> mudo, que segue uma vogal e uma consoante simples, em

palavras monossilábicas, não é pronunciado e serve apenas para
indicar que a vogal antecedente deve ser pronunciada longa: at > ate,
ban > bane, can > cane, cap > cape, fat > fate, hat > hate, mad >
made, mat > mate, past > paste, rag > rage, rat > rate, scrap > scrape,
slat > slate, tap > tape; bar > bare, car > care, far > fare, star > stare,

g) Se o <e> final não é mudo, isso costuma ser indicado pela sua
duplicação: coffee, employee, melee.
h) Como consoantes simples, são considerados também os dígrafos

i) As palavras com vogal longa, normalmente, apresentam as

seguintes estruturas silábicas:

l) Na maior parte dos casos, as vogais longas são indicadas por

combinações de vogais: loaf, meat, say, day. Nesse caso,
comumente, a primeira vogal é pronunciada e a segunda apenas
indica a pronúncia da primeira. Às vezes, algumas combinações de
consoantes também exercem essa função, como é o caso do dígrafo

m) A segunda vogal que indica a pronúncia, normalmente, depende

da posição na palavra: no início, no meio ou no fim.
əʊ se escreve <oa> no início e no meio, mas <ow> no

fim.
eɪ se escreve <ai> no início e no meio, mas <ay> no fim.
n) No inglês, <y> e <w> são semivogais. Se essas letras ocorrem no

início da palavra, são consideradas consoantes, mas, se seguem uma
vogal, formam combinações e, por esse motivo, são consideradas
vogais. O <y> no final de uma palavra também constitui uma vogal:
crazy, happy.
o) No final de uma palavra com duas ou mais sílabas, em que a última

sílaba é tônica, ou em palavras monossilábicas, o <y> é pronunciado
aɪ: deny, retry; my, fry, fly.
p) As vogais longas, incluindo-se também os ditongos, ocorrem no

final de monossílabos, ou em polissílabos com a sílaba final tônica:
he, she, I, no, my, deny, go, due, shy, spy. Isso ocorre também
quando essas palavras formam compostos: hereby.
q) Um <e> mudo precedido por uma consoante ou <th> torna a vogal

precedente longa: bathe, prone, frome, here, hide, tune.
r) As vogais longas, incluindo-se também os ditongos, ocorrem

também em monossílabos, bem como em polissílabos com vogal final
tônica, se uma consoante isolada ou a sequência + <l / r> é
seguida por um <e>: gaze, scene, spite, rope, mute, white, type, wine;
sabre, metre, title, trifle, acre, noble, bufle, eagle; forsake, ignoble,
disciple. Vale lembrar que um único som consonantal pode ser
representado por duas ou mais letras e, por isso, também se
enquadram nessa regra palavras como ache (<ch> = k) e plague
(<gu> = ɡ).
s) Nas sílabas longas e abertas em penúltima posição na palavra,

ocorre vogal longa apenas quando segue outra vogal a ela: chaos,
real, pious, poet, duel, Hyads.
t) A vogal da antepenúltima sílaba é longa quando é seguida por outra

vogal: violent, poetry, gratuitous, hyacinth. O mesmo ocorre quando a
vogal é seguida por <h>: vehicle, annihilate.
u) Se <e> ou tiverem som de i antes de uma sílaba átona, a vogal

da antepenúltima sílaba é longa: meteor, duteous, patriot, previous,
apropriate, peculiar. Nesse caso, é exceção e, normalmente, é
breve: hideous, piteous, opinion, filial, invidious.
v) Uma vogal que é o último fonema de uma sílaba tônica que ocorre
na penúltima posição de uma palavra com duas ou mais sílabas, é
longa: trifle, rifle, human, vapour.
w) No caso de palavras com a mesma origem etimológica, a

passagem do acento para a antepenúltima e a anteantepenúltima
sílaba a torna breve: human > humanity, mature > maturation, hero >
heroism, crime > criminal, miser > miserable, omen > ominous.
x) As vogais <ie> geralmente são usadas para representar o som iː:

field, believe, piece. No entanto, depois de <c>, normalmente usa-se
<ei>: ceiling, deceive, deceit, receive. Outra exceção ocorre quando é
representado o som eɪ: weight, beige, neighbour, foreign, leisure,
seize, either. Algumas exceções notáveis são: sufficient, science.
y) Se as consoantes <c>, <g>, <t> e <s> se aglutinam à vogal que as

segue, tornando a antepenúltima sílaba na penúltima, a sua vogal é
pronunciada longa: ocean, social, specious, species, courageous,
legion, nation, motion, patient, occasion, confusion. Apenas a vogal
 não se enquadra nessa regra: physician, sufficient, pigeon,
religion, opposition, division. Exceções: discretion, special, especial,
precious.
z) A vogal final <y> muda para quando são adicionadas

terminações iniciadas por <e> à palavra: dry > drier, driest. No caso
da terminação <ing>, essa mudança não ocorre: fly > flying.
Vogais seguidas por <r> a) O <r> costuma modificar a pronúncia das

vogais que o antecedem: bar, mar; care, mare; her, mercy, servant;
fir; ford, lord, or; gore, more; absurd, fur; myrtle.
b) Se um <r> segue uma vogal simples, a sua pronúncia é modificada

e difere tanto da das vogais breves quanto da das vogais longas:
<ar> = ɑː: far, car, mar
<or> = ɔː: torch, for, or
<er, ir, yr, ur> = ɜː: fir, first, myrrh, martyr, hurt, curl,
her
c) Essa pronúncia se encontra, usualmente, nas seguintes estruturas

silábicas:

d) No caso de haver um <e> mudo no final da palavra, as pronúncias

costumam ser as seguintes:
<are> = ɛə: mare, flare
<ere> = ɪə: here, mere
<ire, yre> = aɪə: fire, hire, tyre, byre
<ore> = ɔː: more, fore
<ure> = jʊə: cure
<ure> = ʊə: sure
e) As sílabas em que ocorrem essas pronúncias são as elencadas
abaixo:
a) vogal – <re>: ore, ere, ire;

As consoantes do inglês a) As consoantes do inglês apresentam

menos variação de pronúncia do que as vogais, havendo, geralmente,
uma única pronúncia para cada letra ou conjunto de letras: think, key,
lock, mode, same.
b) Os sons consonantais podem ser representados por letras simples,

geminadas ou combinações de duas ou mais letras: mod, cod, pit, so;

Alterações ortográficas Algumas palavras do inglês modificam a sua

ortografia para indicar alterações fonológicas:
Na formação do plural, geralmente é adicionada a terminação <s>:
pen > pens, show > shows, chair > chairs. Substantivos terminados
em <y> alteram essa letra para e acrescentam a terminação <es>:
sky > skies. Contudo, se a palavra terminar em <s>, <sh>, <ch>, <x>
ou <z>, é necessário acrescentar a terminação <es>, pois o <e> deve
ser pronunciado: bus > buses, bush > bushes, beach > beaches, box
> boxes, spritz > spritzes.
Outros poucos substantivos apresentam plural irregular: tooth > teeth,
louse > lice, mouse > mice, foot > feet, child > children, ox > oxen,
man > men, goose > geese.
Há, ainda, substantivos que não se alteram no plural: fish, moose,
sheep.
Nesta seção, são apresentados exercícios com as vogais do inglês. É

importante que o aluno repita as atividades propostas até conseguir
articulá-las com naturalidade, sem precisar forçar a pronúncia ou
pensar em como se deve formar os sons de cada palavra, com tanto

A entonação das palavras do inglês causa algumas dificuldades aos

falantes de português, pois, muitas vezes, apresentam acentuação
distinta. Por esse motivo, ela deve ser aprendida juntamente com a
pronúncia das palavras.
Em inglês, o acento é a pronúncia mais forte de determinada porção
de uma palavra, ou seja, é dada maior ênfase a uma sílaba, para que
a sua pronúncia se distinga das demais. Isso também faz com que a
vogal dessa sílaba seja pronunciada levemente alongada, o seu tom
aumenta e é falada mais alto.
No caso da entonação do inglês, é mais proveitoso simplesmente
decorar a entonação juntamente com a pronúncia das palavras do que
explicar as poucas regras existentes para elas. Por esse motivo, na
