It is especially important the organization of an IGIP Symposium for the first time outside
of Europe, here in Brazil. It is a great opportunity to enlarge in America the numbers of the
ING-PAED IGIP that is an international certification for the engineering and technology
community.
The theme of the symposium is: "Forming International Engineers for the Information Society", a
theme that express the global concern about the future of engineering programs that effectively will form
engineers for the challenging world of 21st Century.
Engineering more than ever has been challenged principally by Mother Nature due to the present weather
conditions that have caused several catastrophes even in places that the chances of having natural disas-
ters are remote. Besides, the growing population the economical changes and revolutions that are causing
social issues everywhere. These are times of huge challenges and engineering is everywhere to help peo-
ple and nations. An example is the recently mining rescue of workers in Atacama Desert in Chile where
everybody could watch the triumph of engineering saving lives and making history.
To prepare engineers for the future work market implies the search for better ways to form them, inserted
in the new world order, with no borders, new economical scenario and a mutant technological environment.
So the present discussions about education in engineering community are about the engineering educator:
how to form educators for the new kind of students immersed in the so called information society where
mobility is higher and technology is easily available. Once more education is a powerful tool to qualify peo-
ple to become capable to prepare future generations of engineers.
The awareness of this need is one step forward and many organizations are working to overcome this lack
of prepared engineering educators and a congress is a wonderful opportunity to show the most recent
achievements in this field. Taking it into account the organization of a congress like IGIP is very important
for the discussions and debates that come to add on the efforts of scientists, educators and professionals
whose aims are to improve the engineering and technology education.
XL IGIP International Symposium on Engineering Education - IGIP2011 counts with the participation of
universities, institutes, professors, researchers, world specialists and politicians engaged with the scientif-
ic development. With a rich technical program it has seminars, interactive special sessions and plenary ses-
sions with speakers of several countries, offering also an interesting and different social and cultural pro-
gram.
As the general chair I would like to thank the host Institution UNISANTA - Santa Cecília University for the
outstanding work in the local organization of the conference. Thanks to the Executive Committee of IGIP
(Internationale Gesellschaft für Ingenieurpädagogik) and in special the President, Prof. Michael Auer for

Once again I am very glad to welcome you to IGIP2011 and I am sure that you find the congress a very
productive, intellectually stimulating and enjoyable
Examining the present conditions of technology and what it can offer it is clear that we
could have meetings remotely however the personal contact is still important for many
human beings. Nothing is better than meet people and exchange ideas and opinions,
having warm discussions and the chance to know people with different backgrounds and
visions. This is the richness of a scientific meeting the personal contact and interaction,
which positive results are countless. I may say that the main purpose of IGIP Symposium is to provide one
of the best ways to establish and maintain the relationship between engineering and technology educators
and institutions in countries throughout the scientific community.
The organization of IGIP2011 outside of Europe constitutes in a contribution to the efforts to enhance
excellence of engineering and technology education worldwide so necessary for the preparation of
professionals ready to provide the society of present world scenario.
I would like to thank all the authors for the great collaborations, the host university, the reviewers for their
great job cooperating with the reviewing process and all the participants for making IGIP2011 a great event.

Plenary Sessions
This work intends just to show a little of IGIP its contributions for engineering and technology education for more than
three decades. Some interesting data about its history can be seen in the many events that have been part of its great
work as an organization with international perspectives.
The paper reveals the main world tendencies of higher education development and their content. It describes their influence
on the trends of foreign language training development as a component of Russian engineering education system.
In Austria, Technical Colleges are those educational institutions that train and educate the skilled technical staff
required by Austrian universities and industry. These colleges have contributed a lot to Austria’s economic
success and every year about 8,000 young engineers leave the technical schools to form a powerful work and
study force. Therefore, it is particularly important that the education they receive meets the requirements of
employers and that innovative developments are anticipated. As a consequence, Austrian Technical Colleges
have developed curricula that rely on learning outcomes and competence-based results. This new orientation
towards skills, knowledge and competences is achieved through learning objectives that precisely describe the
education chosen. How these standards were designed, matched with the curricula, and implemented in colleges
will be described in this paper.
At Estonian Centre for Engineering Pedagogy a complex, multi-layered approach has been designed and is being
implemented for technical teacher education. The designed complex approach consists of three consecutive levels:
bachelor, master and doctoral level. On bachelor level basic engineering competences are acquired. On master level
engineering specialty competences are expanded, additionally knowledge in engineering pedagogy is acquired. On
doctoral level implicit competences of an engineering educator are provided. Entrance qualifications for all levels have
been clearly defined. The result of the process is to graduate educators with certified degrees and specific
competencies which certify them as qualified teachers in technical subjects. The heart of the approach is complex of
curricula designed to overcome the difference between entrance level and graduation qualification, being oriented on
learning outcomes. Process of quality control should be initiated to improve the approach continuously. Detailed
description of the complex approach is presented in the article.
THE VALUE OF HANDS-ON ACTIVITY IN TEACHING SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY: FROM TRADITIONAL
LABS TO THE REMOTE AND VIRTUAL LABORATORIES
From the Experiential Learning Theory to the constructivist theory of Jean Piaget the lab activity appears as
fundamental teaching/learning methodology. Additionally, new technologies brought new and innovative tools for
these activities and with them the remote and virtual labs. In the talk based in this topic for a round table the
discussion will be centered in the important complementary role of remote and virtual labs when considered in
parallel with the traditional labs.
The implementation of the Bologna Process in the Portuguese Higher Education system led to deep changes at this
education level. In order to harmonize and to level the Portuguese higher education with other European countries
several measures were determined, including access expansion, especially for new target groups. Among others the
+23 year olds students and Technology Specialization Courses (CET) are considered new target groups. CET´s
Students quota are new at this level of education, so a study was carried out to understand the evolution of these new
target group courses in Engineering and Technology, at University of Minho. For such, a data survey of students that
entered through this quota was used and their academic path analyzed. These students have expectations,
motivations and different backgrounds in comparison with other students. Understand their performance in higher
education may help to answer adequately to the needs of this new target group.
In the academic year 1987/1988 a new specialization profile in Geotechnics has been launched in the 5th and final
year of the Civil Engineering degree course at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto. After a brief introduction
of the University and the Faculty, this paper describes the geotechnical training that is provided at our school and
reviews the results of almost 25 years experience of education in this important area of Civil Engineering.
International exposure as well as project-based service learning for undergraduate students have gained much
attention for their positive impact on students. Additionally, ABET engineering criteria require international
exposure for all undergraduates. As such, a goal of the University of Pittsburgh is to have fifty percent of our
students directly participate in an international experience. Over the past few years the university has offered a
freshmen service-learning engineering course. This has provided evidence that service learning is a valuable
educational tool to develop a sense of value and direction, teach team dynamics and communication skills, and
engage the students in a community. This paper will discuss a new senior cap stone service learning engineering
course with an international component. Over this spring semester, undergraduate students will be given the
opportunity to design a potable water system for a poor, rural Ecuadorian village that currently does not have a
reliable water source.
Teresa L. Larkin
Research on student learning has shown that learning can be enhanced when students are motivated to learn and
are actively engaged with the course content. This paper will highlight strategies that can be used to enhance
motivation, learner engagement, and success. To enhance motivation, a learning style approach will be described
that can easily be adapted across all disciplines within STEM education. To enhance and assess student learning,
some simple but highly effective writing strategies will be shared. These strategies include easy-to-implement,
formative methods of assessment to help gauge and measure student progress while the learning is actually taking
place. Formative assessment methods include a description of a free-writing approach as well as more structured
Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs). These methods are intended to supplement more traditional
assessment measures and often provide a more robust view of what students are actually learning while the
learning is taking place.

THE STUDENTS, ACADEMICS AND E-LEARNING
Anna Suchodolska
Knowledge management is now one of the most developed approaches in the science of organization and management
that have l many interesting studies. Reflections on the management of knowledge in the educational project are the
subject of this article. For the purpose of the article it is assumed that knowledge is understood in two ways, and includes
both the so-called tacit knowledge, the hidde, which means the experience, skills and relationships, often expressed
through a wide -know-how- and knowledge articulated openly, often highly codified, described in the literature as part of
the information or -know what. This definition is particularly important because of the importance of knowledge in the minds
of employees, which acquisition and proper using in the project realization is a major challenge.
There are shown practices of training postgraduates in Ukraine taking into account philosophic aspects of the science.
There is presented “Philosophic Problems of Scientific Knowledge” course developed by scientists of the Department
of Philosophy of the National Mining University, Ukraine. The course favours all-around training of young scientists.
The course objective is to increase knowledge in the sphere of philosophy and methodology of the science. The
training helps young scientists to solve in their research not only technical bottom-line problems but also to distinguish
results within integral scientific system taking into account global problems of anthropological nature. The course is
closely connected with ideas of knowledge synthesis being effected by means of expanding object fields of research.
Besides, elaboration of methodological practices capable to play a role of cognitive activity infrastructures in all its
spheres is used.

Polish society is undergoing complex processes of transforming them into knowledge society. Private universities in
the situation of the quality of demographic, economic and legal in Poland after accession to the European Union
should identify their unique situation. The author made the diagnosis of conditions of non-public university in aim to
develop strategic scenarios, which have to be chosen by a founder to ensure the functioning its university.

Methods for teaching Engineering processes demand previous knowledge of mathematical tools, introduced in
courses basic cycles. Some tools, however, might have not been learnt beforehand. A solution for this difficulty is to
encourage students to learn the mathematical tool inductively via problem-based learning. The paper reports the
pedagogical experience of performing spectral analysis on a sea-level time series with a Civil Engineering
undergraduate class. The serial moving average is computed to estimate tide-oscillation trend, so making students
familiar to these concepts. Calculations are performed via electronic spreadsheet, using formulae programmed by
students themselves. The motivation caused by the problem and the appeal to intuition could better fix concepts, and
shorten learning time – from six to three teaching hours (although data typing and data organization took an extra
homework hour). Finally, the computer lab workshop environment (with targets and deadlines) demonstrated the value
of team work and enhanced student performance.
Session ET1B
The following paper describes the approach to the creation of the adaptive technologies of education. The approach
under discussion was developed by the authors of the article. The necessity of the integration of educational
resources in the unified mediatec of educational fragments as well as in the unified test task data base is shown. The
developed tools for modification of educational WEB- based oriented courses are described. The article describes
methods, models, algorithms and software tools aimed at automation of the process of forming of computer
heterogeneous tests. These methods can be used for the final testing on engineering disciplines.
PROJECT LEARNING OF MODEL PUD-BJ - WITHOUT PARENTS TOWARDS SUCCESSFUL INITIAL LITE
RACY IN PRESCHOOL PERIOD WITH THE HELP OF INSTUMENTS PROTECTED BY LETTERS PATENT
Jo ica Bezjak
Successfulness of the contemporary method of initial literacy was the research’s matter. Our aim was to manufacture
innovative instruments for reading and writing that can be used for preschool children – electronic didactic tablets,
anatomically designed pen and sound picture books, and to test them in practice in kindergartens, first grades of nine-
year primary school, programmes for children with special needs and with illiterate adults. Moreover, we questioned
the current method of the initial literacy. We do not believe in the reasonableness of writing over-dimensional letters
on the blackboard and in the notebook as this takes children too much energy and is completely inadequate since we
do not write with the shoulder and the elbow, but we with the twist of the wrist and usually with three fingers.

This work in progress presents an on-line product designed to create a remote tutorial system, one which implements
the key functionalities of an academic tutorial using an electronic format. The tool developed provides students with
several services, such as queries being settled by tele-tutorial, the exchange of files, a bulletin board system to help
answer questions using figures, texts and writing in real time, or a chat room, among others. The current pilot phase
is being conducted with the help of 2nd-year Telecommunications engineering students taking the subject of Electronic
Technology. The sampling will confirm the tool’s suitability by means of two indicators: academic performance and a
satisfaction survey for both students and professors.
ADAPTABILITY OF STUDENTS
The abstract deals with the adaptability of students to the technical universities. It describes the way how the Faculty
of Material Science and Technology in Trnava gets over with this phenomena. In conclusion there are formulated
proposals for further research in this field.
The contribution describes the quality of education, especially the quality of the teaching process. We focus on the
quality of the teaching in a training school, where the students of the study programme Teaching Professional
Technical Subjects within the Institute of Engineering Pedagogy and Humanities receive practical teacher training. The
survey mapping the quality of the teaching process in the Economy subjects was carried out in a training school with
the aim to improve the quality of teaching process in the above-mentioned subjects. The survey conducted via
questionnaire focused mainly on the pupils involved, teacher’s personality and work, delivery of the information to the
pupils, activity of the pupils in the learning process and the satisfaction of the pupils with the way of teaching the
Economy subjects. The survey results are being discussed in the article.
Students’ Training Centre is a joint project of Commercial Academy and Language School in Znojmo, Microsoft Co.,
Hewlett Packard Co., EDU 2000 Co. and Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies. The best six students of the study
program Information Science in Economics of the 2nd year of their study will undergo few months’ preparation on the
product of Microsoft Office 2010 in academic year 2010/2011. Consequently, learners will graduate from technical
certification at the end of the first stage. The necessary part of the project is a teaching preparation. Thus, the content
of the tutorials is not limited only for technical issues, but for educational matters as well. After half of year they will
take in a role of an active successor having a responsibility to select new participants. Such a way, this circle should
produce graduates from secondary school with high level of technical knowledge.
Emin Do an Aydın
The mission and curriculum of our Department of Visual Communication Design at the _stanbul Aydın University in
Turkey is designed considering the rapid change, which the modern communication tools, systems and institutions
are put through in terms of dimensions and contents as well as the social ramifications that they cause. While the
focus of discussions in communication studies was placed on the radio, TV, printed media and cinema until only a few
decades ago, we are confronted today with the prevalence of the complicated, diversified and puzzling means of
communication. The main goal of this paper is promoting consciousness regarding the rapid developments especially
in the modern communications media and their cultural and economic effects as well as outlining a model that serves
to make the necessary knowledge and skills possible in pursuit of success in the Information Age.
Session ET1C
ASSESSING SKILLS IN PROBLEM SOLVING OF DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS
In this paper we describe a case-based teaching approach for a design course in distributed systems. Real life cases
are used for relating background knowledge and new concepts in in-class group work and out-of-class assignments.
The learning approach is a spiral approach based on reflection and knowledge collaboration for problem resolution.
Classroom assessment techniques (CATs) are used to give and get feedback of students learning. We focus on a CAT
set that comprises the basic steps of problem solving. Students must follow them to solve the case. This CATs set is
mainly used for a single problem, we adapted it to complex systems. Finally, we will describe the experience and

Grading students in a technology intensive course as Operating Systems is troublesome. The usual way of grading is
asking short open questions. Students have to exhibit enough mastery of the Operating Systems Background to
elaborate on the topic. It is difficult to overcome some misunderstanding on the depth of the required answer and to
avoid rote memorization answers. In the grading we used to mark students exams with long notes on where they failed
to meet the expectations. However we have no feedback on the use students make of the markings (or whether they
actually read them). We found ourselves writing the same marks over and over again. As a pilot project we began using
rubrics as a guide for grading. Sharing the rubric with the students we are letting them know in advance the expected
depth of the answers. In this paper we present our experience using rubrics..
This paper applies the concept of core competence in society, although it was originally developed for the corporate
world. The desirable skills for someone to become serene appears that are possessed by good leaders sought by large
enterprises. Then it is clear that the concept of social and emotional learning proposed by Goleman answers the skills
development of society, and that alternative concepts of education, as developed by the Sathya Sai Organization, serve
the same purpose. Thus, it is shown that it is possible to improve society in the long term by investing in institutions which
educates people to be more ethical, more balanced and more sociable.
This paper presents a study in the School of Technology of an Institution of Higher Education of the Federal District -
Brasília, to estimate the performance of students in the disciplines of Mathematic Sciences. A database of 700 pairs of
examples and techniques of artificial intelligence, fuzzy k-means and Neural Networks were used. The training data and
test were separated using the technique of fuzzy k-means clustering, which allows grouping elements with similar
characteristics. Separated 20% data to compose the test set and the remaining 80% were part of the training set. It was
used for training the neural network algorithms and resilient backpropagation with Bayesian regularization. The best
results were obtained with the resilient backpropagation algorithm. The computational tool that was used is MATLAB
(Mathworks, 2006). In the results it was obtained a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.98 and that will aid in pedagogical
decisions.
The increasing role of social media in creating/consuming information has been recognized as a marketing tool to
promote a specific need. The Biometric Standards, Performance and Assurance (BSPA) Laboratory at Purdue University
implemented social networking sites as a way to promote their research activities and attract prospective students and
biometric industry professionals. With that in mind, they have created accounts on and started using Twitter, LinkedIn
and SlideShare. Data about site referrals to the BSPA Laboratory homepage, gathered using Google Analytics, will be
used to analyze the effects (if any) social networking sites have in promotional activities and increase interaction with
the BSPA Laboratory home page (http://www.bspalabs.org/). Gathered data will show the differences in unique visitors
before and after becoming active in social networks and will show data linking specific social networks with an effect.

The role of Science, engineering and technology is examined in the 21st century as globalization of the world economy
is getting the world’s attention. This paper proposes the introduction of entrepreneurial mindset into engineering students’
curriculum. Equipping the students with entrepreneurial mindset prepares the graduates to readily contribute to
transforming and catalyzing and actualizing the work force. They should be equipped with strong skills and
entrepreneurial education environment which can be put to test after graduation. The role of future engineers in the
profession is reviewed with regards to transforming ordinary students to technical leaders equipped with
technical/entrepreneurial mindset ready to change the world with revolutionary and innovative ideas. The paper presents
what entrepreneurial mindset actually means, the way to teach/assess that students have acquired it. Fundamentals
of entrepreneurial mindset using the analytical technique: synthesis, creativity and innovation and finally, designing for
commercialization will be presented and discussed.

We are witnessing a resurgence of interest in Functional Programming (FP). Unlike the imperative models of computing,
FP has its roots in Lambda Calculus, a branch of Mathematical Programming that predates the modern computer. FP’s
conception and design were therefore not as much constrained by the physical limitations of the computer as was the
case for the imperative models including Object Oriented programming. Besides its Mathematical roots, FP provides
many other benefits for software engineering and computing curricula. While the OO paradigm remains dominant both
in industry and academia, its limits are already being seen. We examine in this paper the key role that FP can play within
academic computing curricula and see why its return to prominence is something that we in academia must embrace
and promote given its many benefits to our profession.
The multi-level curriculum structure in Russia will become compulsory on September 1, 2011, so that a big number of
bachelors will be graduating from higher schools since 2015. Though in some higher schools the transition towards new
structure was completed even before the beginning of Bologna process. The Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical
Technology (MITHT) fully implemented the multi-level curriculum structure in 1997. The MITHT experience helps to
suggest the most low-cost way of transition to this structure. Its concept meets the requirements of the Bologna
Declaration and preserves the best traditions of Russian education: deep and wide basic training, combination of study
and scientific investigations, substantial amount of practical training. The curriculum also provides programs of different
level and specialization, alternative varieties of curriculum within the same level, working out the professional
specialization courses together with future employer, creating of competitive environment for the whole period of
education.

Industrial Technology (IT) 345, a junior-level course at Purdue University, has been assessing students’ learning styles
every semester since spring 2008 to understand how to best send information to the student. IT 345 is a hands-on,
lecture, and laboratory course on the subject of automatic identification and data capture technology including barcodes,
scanning technology, card technology, and biometric technology. The Index of Learning Styles (ILS) questionnaire by
Felder and Silverman was administered to assess students’ learning styles and categorize students according to their
learning style as active/reflective, sensing/intuitive, visual/auditory, or sequential/global learners. The goals of this paper
are to understand the categories of students that perform well in the course and whether the teaching methods and the
media used to deliver this information are sufficiently universal to satisfy all students.

DEVELOPMENT OF LOW COST SENSOR USING MICROPROCESSOR FOR COLOR ANALYSIS IN
PRODUCTION PROCESSES
This research intends to report the development of portable, microprocessor equipment that allows it to take
measurements of surface color and determine his composition that it shows the RGB (Red, Green and Blue) color as
a friendly interface for the end user. It is intended to show, through a digital instrument, the composition of a target
color based on the reading of the reflected wavelength values to the sensor to be built. With this study, we observe the
use of digital systems with electronic sensors to replace conventional and humans systems, identifying colors in real
time, assisting in its correct identification by providing reliable information for decision-making process within structures
and systems that require the correct colors identification in production processes, more agile and precise.

The project-based learning thread allows the students to have articulation with the professional reality, relationship between
theory and practice, developing their soft skills, such as accomplishment of collaborative activities, explanation of ideas
and problems in an accessible way, oral and written communication, conduct of meetings, decision making, conflicts
management and projects management. This study employs three different subjects: involvement of students from different
grades, being 2nd and 4th grades; a great number of students, approximately eighty; and little interferences of the
professors, as it is expected that the students are autonomous on their works. This experience took place at the first
semester of 2008/2009 and the findings are extremely satisfactory, pointing out an increase of the student’s motivation and
commitment and to have more autonomy, responsibility and assertiveness in making decision throughout the projects.

Engineering courses could benefit from the systematic use of interactive computational resources to support teaching
of introductory disciplines. In this paper we present iLM (interactive Learning Modules), which are content specific,
multiplatform, software to improve the teaching and learning process. Such components could be easily incorporated
to Learning and Content Management Systems, through the implementation of a few methods. Therefore, based on
experiments conducted with middle and high school students, we propose the use of iLM as tool for motivating such
students to engage in Computer Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET) careers, as well as physics and
mathematics ones. Moreover, we outline the use of existent iLM during introductory CSET courses
The technology education focuses on logical-mathematical thinking, on algorithms, on arguments and on some linguistic
skills to describe and solve problems seeking the technical and scientific training of students. The Cartesian method is
usually the epistemological basis of technological knowledge and structure. It is taken in a natural way and little
questioned on its limits for understanding or modeling of complex situations. Ideologies, values, social and cultural
factors involved in problems are frequently disregarded. However, a large part of the problems that arise in the
contemporary world requires elaborated reasoning strategies that involve critical thinking, systemic thinking and non-
linear thinking to find innovative solutions. It is necessary to consider the multiple possible configurations of the parts
of a problem, which express different real situations. It is suggested, therefore, strategies that develop critical thinking
and systemic thinking, as means of expanding the possibilities of the "solution space" of technological problems.
The job market for the technology area is still warm. There is demand for graduates from technology courses at the national
and global levels. Students are eager to receive their degree, because many are already employed. Companies are seeking
for interns. Before considering them just a skilled workforce, at low cost, they perceive it as an opportunity for training and
selection. Course coordinators are constantly receiving requests for announcing jobs and internships. Domestic and foreign
companies come to the university to offer lectures and to recruit candidates for jobs and internships. The scenario is promising
for the student. However, it is clear that even so, evasion and delay in graduation are still relevant. Some data was gathered
up to show these and other parameters and offer hypotheses to explain what happens in these technological courses.
Some actions are suggested to prevent/minimize the dropout and motivate students to persevere.
Much has been said about the engineer of the 21st Century, a new professional that, besides unquestioned expertise,
would have skills such as teamwork, knowledge of foreign languages and cultures, creative thinking, effective oral and
written communication and an adequate profile for the needs the global market. Moreover, there is the need to develop
habits of lifelong learning, awareness of their social role and be able to take on tasks within their community. A
professional able to adapt to quickly changes in products and in economy. That keeps up to date and qualified. How is
the current engineering student reacting/adapting to this? There are cases of depression and anxiety. Are they related
to the new demands of the profession, which, in addition to a broader training, still demand that professionals invest
their time and money to maintain their employability?
Technology courses focus mainly on training professionals to meet the immediate needs of the productive system.
Science and scientific method are taken as secure foundations in the generation of technological knowledge.
Applications and quick notorious results are sought. Technological innovation is valued and it requires creativity.
However, new paradigms are disregard. There is a lack of questioning of previous solutions. The consideration of
influences of many aspects that should take part in the search for true efficiency of technological solutions is neglected.
There is further need to think about science and scientific knowledge, its limitations and social and individual influences
in technological problem solving. New scientific paradigms could enlarge space of solutions. There is the need to
transform technological teaching in Technological Education.

Recent Research suggest the use of formalisms such as stochastic Petri nets (SPN - Stochastic Petri Nets), Markov
chains (MC - Markov Chains) and stochastic automata networks (SAN - Stochastic Automata Networks) to build a
behavioral model which facilitates the analysis and validation of system during development, whose results make
possible to develop a more robust and efficient software. Aiming to obtain a behavioral model of computing systems in
this paper demonstrates a method of converting activity diagrams to SAN, a formalism that allows modeling of systems,
from which it is possible to extract probabilistic indices related to states the model and generate test cases for software.
Informatics domain of knowledge is accepted as an applied domain. Computer Sciences theories concern to
presupposes which support tools development and application. This paper explains difficulties of integration between
theoretical foundation and applications in terms of pedagogic aspects. The expression “real world”, a popular term in
Computer Programming disciplines raises modeling task to generic complexity level, named vertical knowledge
approach. It is described the relationship between Object Oriented Modeling Tool and Complex Thought Knowledge.
It is also enhanced the relevance of Krysten Nygaard theoretic modeling tool proposal. Thematic examples supporting
development of teaching topics under a process approach favor the Inverted Curriculum structure. Thematic approach
is in accordance with Inverted Curriculum proposal. It is a possibility of evolution of traditional curriculum structure in
technologic area. Thematic approach favors a vertical hierarchy of knowledge, and, this way, harmony between
theoretical area and practical applications constitute an emergency.

The teaching of exact sciences deserves careful consideration because teaching science means to teach how it is
possible to understand the nature as part of everyday life. Thus, teacher education should lead the construction of
different meanings and hegemonic about science and technology, especially now that Brazil faces the problems of
"how to educate in the knowledge era" and "how to educate the country's transition from third to first world." In this
context it should be thinking about how to significantly improve the primary and secondary education, with the creation
of legal frameworks for the practice of science and technology, the socialization of science, among others. It is clear
that if necessary the improvement of teaching and pedagogical issues linked to strategies and activities focused on
programming for teaching sciences, motivating and consolidating real learning.

System of Higher Education - SINAES initially prioritized three areas: external evaluation and self-assessment, the
overall on-site courses (AGC) and National Examination Performance Assessment (ENADE). The teacher, in his role

In this century the technology has assumed an important role in education, especially when it comes to the speed
offered to satisfy the human beings’ needs. The teachers, however, need to know to deal with technological tools,
showing its objectives in regard to improve the quality of life of their students. If the teacher does not know how to link
the technology to human needs, these tools only serve to maximize the rate of failure of students. Using educational
technology, teachers are able to provide students the opportunity to connect critically the technologies to their study
environment at the same time they broaden the vision of it. The current society now expects that professionals are
ready for a globalized world increasingly competitive. So, at this time should be considered the valorization of the
student as a not mechanized and not immediate person.

The learners´ knowledge is constantly changing during the learning process and therefore not easy to be certain about
their cognitive abilities at a given time. Consequently, the capture of the student´s knowledge level (dynamic and multi-
valued) requires specific procedures. Teachers use several methods to obtain the student´s cognitive diagnosis. Fuzzy
logic techniques have been used to improve the performance of evaluation systems due to their ability to handle
imprecise information. A method that includes fuzzy logic procedures is presented. The information analyzed has been
obtained from regular courses of engineering specialties at UNMDP. Three linguistic variables are analyzed: ‘student´s
grades progression’, ‘tests result level’ and ‘mark in relation to mean group mark’. A ‘knowledge level’ value is obtained
applying fuzzy logic rules to previously mentioned variables.

One of the most powerful concepts in mathematics is the concept of function. However, in the educational context,
students have some problems understanding and applying such concept. This is one of many reasons why is necessary
to propose different teaching techniques in order to study functions and, in the process, integrate other fields of
knowledge such as Computation (Computer Sciences). In other hand, Mexico has an incipient development of
educational software which limits the teaching-learning process, particularly in the field of mathematics. In this paper,
a theoretical framework is developed in order to address the concept of function. An ASP.Net 2005 application is
developed to help build the proposed functions. To conclude, the aim of this work is to develop computer based tools
to increase the comprehension and mastery of mathematics in students and teachers.

ADAPTIVE DESIGNING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES AT THE
INSTITTIONS OF HIGER ENGINEERING EDUCATION
Farida T. Shageeva
Educational technologies form the basis for development of professional competences of higher engineering institutions’
graduates. They should be adaptive which allows sensitive responding to internal and external changes and at the
same time keeping integrity and efficiency of the technology and correspondence of its results to customer demand and
labor market. The author has developed conception that includes methodological approaches, main ideas, laws and
principles as well as algorithm of adaptive designing of educational technologies in the institutions of higher engineering
education. Adaptive designing provides stability of educational technology due to premeditated change response: with
the help of changes in the functioning algorithm, realization strategies or search for optimal states and processes. The
designing algorithm includes working out multiple alternative solutions that allows making optimal choice in specific
situations and gain predesigned results.

The contribution deals with the ways of acquiring pedagogical competences by the graduates of engineering, other
than pedagogical, study programmes. The analysis of the current state of teacher-training for the graduates of
technical universities, who will teach specific engineering subjects in secondary or tertiary schools, is based upon
the data collected in the process of innovation of the study programme oriented on the teaching of specific technical
subjects. The experience with the above-mentioned programme implementation showed that, despite the
satisfaction of both teachers and students, certain modifications and innovations are inevitable. The graduate profile
of the study programme needs to be continuously modified in order to improve the graduate’s status in practice and
to optimise the balance of natural, technical, social, pedagogical and psychological sciences. The paper lists the
innovations of the subjects’ curricula, methods and forms of training, regarding the latest educational issues such
as information transfer.
This paper describes the introduction of two new courses in the area of the project management and ethics used by
both Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology programs at Texas Southern University. These introductory
courses are offered in the first and second semesters for both programs as part of continuous improvement and
curriculum modification. The main emphasis of this paper is devoted to the process of assessment and curriculum
development. It also shows how assessment data were obtained and analyzed. Finally, it demonstrates how the
feedbacks from analyzed data were utilized to enhance or modify either course or program’s educational objectives and
outcomes. In order to establish an efficient assessment method, a two-tier process was developed. The first tier was
course-embedded, while the second tier was implemented at the curriculum level. The two-tier process provided a
system of on-going evaluation and continuous improvement of the program.

The article is written in a study of the dynamic effects of vehicles on bridges. Spans a variety of bridge structures during
the passage of vehicles on them are dynamic action. The extent of this impact in the design of bridges is taken into
account design standards for more than a hundred years with the help of dynamic coefficients representing the ratio of
the deflections or the efforts of the dynamic effects of vehicles on the bridges to the deflection or the efforts of the static
of their impact. Norms of designing bridges across Europe, America and Asia contain different formulas for calculating
these factors, taken on the basis of many different theoretical and experimental studies. In this article we aim to examine
the most famous of them and evaluate them in terms of physical their validity.

While haptic devices have been available to the research community for some time, it is only recently that lower-cost
models have enabled broader adoption in the education community. Even so, typical commercial devices are often as
expensive as the computers driving them, and are sometimes limited by software provided by the manufacturer. This
paper describes an alternate haptic device designed for the computer game community, available at low cost, and for
which open-source drivers and application frameworks are available. Specifically, it describes the strengths and
limitations of the Novint Falcon haptic game controller, available open-source drivers, and high-level development
environments. The paper then describes how the resulting infrastructure is used to enhance the computer literacy
course through touch-enabled games and medical models, as well as describing future potential for enhancing the
computer graphics and operating systems curricula.
PYTHON AND CUDA FOR PARALLEL PROCESSING: AN UNDERGRADUATE CASE STUDY ACCELERATING
NEURAL NETWORK MAMMOGRAM PROCESSING
Originally confined to computer graphics, the GPU has emerged as a significant application accelerator in the parallel
programming arena. NVIDIA, with the CUDA programming framework, has made a substantial contribution to making
the GPU facilities accessible. In addition, the PyCUDA project provides Python language bindings to the CUDA
infrastructure. This paper profiles the role of Python and CUDA in a parallel processing course by featuring an
undergraduate project implementing a convolutional filter to accelerate neural network processing of large mammogram
images as a case study. Specifically, we describe the course, mammogram images and processing, the Python and
CUDA interfaces, and the resulting speedup, along with observations on pedagogy.
SOFTWARE TOOL FOCUSED ON ALGEBRAIC CONCEPTS OF A GENERALIZED SIGNALS & SYSTEMS THEORY
Signal and Systems (S&S) theory plays a fundamental role in the educational background of electrical engineering as
well as in other scientific areas. In connection with the mathematical modeling of physical problems –scattering, for
instance- a generalized scheme of the S&S theory is currently under development, emphasizing the roles played by
infinite dimensional signal spaces, operator theory to characterize linear invariant and non invariant systems, a
generalized “spectral analysis” concept and their connection to the theory of distributions. Parallel to the development
of the generalized S&S scheme and based on it, a software tool is being worked out. This tool tries to facilitate the
students the understanding and visualization of the connection between the usual S&S theory and the algebraic
concepts in our generalized scheme providing with some practical examples related to the usual Fourier representation
as well as Hilbert and Bessel transformations and the relationship between all of them.
Noise in digital video is typically handled with simple inter-frame operations and since these operations could be used in
more advance video processing is a good starting point for any research on video. Although, there are many barriers to
learn and comprehend video processing topics; these are related mainly to the learning curve of the hardware and software
for video processing and the inherent complexity of video. In order to overcome the former, a set of guides ranging from
video standards, to noise reduction algorithms, in simulation, Simulink and in hardware TMS320DM642, were developed
to aid the self-learning processing either for researchers or students. In this paper we present the result of two different
courses where this self-learning methodology was used and the results of selected noise removal algorithms.

to acquire mathematical tools needed to work with complex engineering problems. This was the inspiration to start
cooperation between our universities to find better methods how to motivate our students for learning theoretical
concepts. We describe some of the courses and projects at both educational institutions, and our cooperation across
out two universities. We conclude by analyzing the results achieved by students compared to purely theoretical courses.

Engineering education requires knowledge and skills to formulate and solve various problems competently. Methods
of teaching descriptive geometry, to the first year students of mining-oil faculty of Perm State Technical University, are
aimed at the formation and development of skills required for future specialists in the process of solving problems: the
study of real-world engineering problems using graphical simulation (the transition from concrete to abstract objects and
vice versa); ability to solve the same problem by different methods, which allows you to select the optimal solution; the
inclusion elements of research and analysis in the task; solving engineering problems, which students formulate on their
own, using literature in their specialty; direct and inverse problems; teamwork. Russian and foreign experience of
teaching is used, as well as our own innovations. The use of such non-traditional pedagogical decisions introduces first-
year students with cognitive, engineering and communication activities.
The disaffection of students for electrical engineering led us to define new curricula based on concepts of electronics
that could attract students. The idea of a course leading to jobs such as integrator of solutions for energetic efficiency
of buildings, or designer of systems for smart homes revealed to be fitted as well with the needs of companies as with
the interest of young people. The point of view of the design of the curriculum is for 2/3 the point of view of the IEEE
engineer and for 1/3 the point of view of the building engineer. To go through such a transverse project, methodology
of brainstorming and team efficiency is necessary. The result is a curriculum considered by major companies of the
domain as necessary, and by the team of researchers-teachers of the engineering school as a project allowing a better
knowledge of the fields of each other.

This paper presents the results of researches of Polish managers work according to the new approach to project
realization. These researches were conducted by an interview method. The main aim of researches was to confirm the
thesis that the main aspect of projects is knowledge not only the manager but equally important is knowledge of
employees. During the project’s realization this person is not a typical manager who meets a definite management
function. It is a function as leader manager who inspires and mobilizes the team of workers to operate. In this article
we focus on three area:
• basic projects realization categories efficiently using work teams,
• the features of modern and typical approach to projects using work teams,
• manager’s tasks according to taking advantage of teams.
Taking into account the difficulties met on the ten year’ way of realization the Bologna declaration that have been
analyzed in “the Leuvene communiqué”, April 2009 the authors attract their attention to some important aspects of the
future reforms in the higher engineering education. They are as follows:
1. Adherence to principles of the social responsibility.
2. Transition to the "student centered" education (that is from teaching to learning).
3. The principle "LLL" – Life Long Learning.
The specific conditions of Russia in providing the Bologna reforms are described.

Since the 1990’s, there has been an increased interest in the development of engineering curricula to include exposure
of students to engineering education in other countries. The purpose for these programs is to expose the students, and
professors teaching engineering, to the aspects of globalization which may affect the careers of these future engineers.
The author of this presentation has been involved in developing and managing these programs at his university since
1996, and the scope of his involvement has presently a global reach over several continents.
The decision of a problem for comparability of national systems of students gain score with all-European system ECTS

estimation of students training achieved results to European system ECTS for the purpose to find the proved conformity
between them. For this purpose the real statistical data of estimations of students achievements according to the system
accepted in Kazakhstan have been preliminary investigated and variants of new Kazakhstan system of the estimations
well corresponding to European system ECTS are developed. Results of the decision of these researches are claimed
and will be widely used for recalculations of estimations from the Kazakhstan system in European, and on the contrary.
Large-scale projects of development of Russian petrochemical complex implies advanced professional training, which will
meet requirements of working industries and prepare specialists, which are able to learn quickly new technological proces-
ses and productions in short terms. The main directions of advanced personnel training for petrochemical complex are fun-
damentalization of education with the elements of multidisciplinarity; intense development of system of further education;
variability, which implies modification of content of training taking into account new tendencies of professional performance;
involvement of world’s leading scientists into education process. Integration of industry research, education and business
within process of professional training provides involvement of scientific and business communities into realisation of the
objectives of personnel training; use of logistics of technical universities, research institutes and industries; agreement of
content of training with employers; formation of unified information base; joint solution of fundamental and applied problems.
International standards are drivers of the economy, yet few institutions have dedicated standards classes that explain
their role and function. This paper describes how faculty can incorporate international standards development in an
academic research agenda, using ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 37 biometrics sub-committee and the US biometric standards
committee (INCITS M1) as case studies. This paper will explain how students can become involved in standards
development, participate in meetings, and become editors of national and international standards. It also describes the
development of courses and research projects as direct outputs of international standards meetings.

papers are consistent and well constructed / written, they can be little contributory in the field of knowledge of teaching-
learning process and from the educational standpoint.
For a long time to recover in mathematics has been of concern in high schools. The difficulties are: the recovery occurs
quickly enough for the student, difficulties in identifying a date / time for call-up lessons and tests that meet both the
teacher and the student, lack of physical space, by the educational institution, for student attendance, among others.
Given this situation, the authorities and scholars of education have been expending considerable efforts in seeking
solutions to the problem. This study proposes to examine the application of educational tools related to Information
Technology and Education, such as Learning Objects, Avatars and Conceptual Maps in the recovery process study of
the subject of Mathematics in high and technical school, having as platform a Virtual Environment for Teaching –Learning
process. It is hoped that this project contribute significantly to improving the pass rate in this discipline.
This study comprises the obtainment of mechanical and thermal characterisation of blends of low density
polyethylene/poly(vinyl butyral), recycled of laminated glass from the automotive industry. In this research two parameters
were evaluated, the influence of the quantity of PVB used in the preparation of blends and the type of mixing, using calender
and/or extruder. The blends containing 5% PVB calendered presented the most significant variations in mechanical properties
compared with PEBD. For this concentration and for this type of processing, the results of traction and flexion showed
higher values; the impact resistance decrease 2.4. The index of fluidity increase 30% suggesting a possible degradation of
the material by scission of main chains, in accordance with DMA results that indicated smaller temperature of the glass
transition. The results obtained for the softening point VICAT and HDT not indicated significant variations.

This work in progress provides the partial results obtained by the authors on student opinion regarding competence-
based learning and the way in which each of these competences is going to be used in the future. The opinions of
final-year Telecommunications engineering students were gathered for the purposes of this study. This was the collective
chosen as they have the sufficient knowledge to judge the methodology implanted in the University of Deusto several
years ago and which is now totally integrated in the new “Bologna degrees”. The results confirm that 80% of the students
valued the introduction of competences in learning methods positively. Furthermore, they believe that these skills,
particularly those of teamwork, time management and planning, are going to be of great use to them in aiding their
incorporation into the labour market.
The intention is to train students in advances new in disciplines of engineering various. We want to prepare researchers
in technical and technological areas that are able to apply scientific methods enable them to achieve innovative
rigorously results. Also to seek students to develop skills in analysis and synthesis. Then the questions that arise are
how do we do? What are ways to achieve it? What are strategies learning that accompany this process? And in any
case how evaluate its results?.This is the challenge facing us. This paper intends to test some answers, obtained from

Many students are uncomfortable with real world engineering problems where needs and requirements must be
concretely defined and the selection of design solutions is not black and white. This paper presents a two semester,
multi-disciplinary senior capstone project for students in three Engineering and Technology Department programs
(electrical engineering, electrical and computer engineering technology, and engineering technology) that brings together
the tools of project management, the creative product development process with industry sponsored projects. The
projects are fully integrated with the Rapid Center with its dual goals of economic development and enhanced learning.
The stage/gate development process is used with six formal reviews covering the development of the proposal through
to the fabrication and testing of the project goal. Over the past four years 35 projects have been undertaken with
students getting an exciting authentic life experience and introducing them to the real world of engineering.
In 2004, The Netherlands formulated their ambition to become a prominent knowledge economy, a leader in the areas
of education, research and innovation: 15% more STEM-graduates and an increase in young people choosing a STEM-
career. Since then, the Dutch Platform Science and Technology (Platform Bèta Techniek) has been successful in
obtaining these goals: polytechnics saw an increase of 15%, at universities the growth was 62%! The main grow was
because more girls choose STEM nowadays. Introducing a revolutionary high-trust innovation strategy, the Platform
made performance-innovation-agreements with schools and institutions, defining their own ambition and approach.
This means that the Platform approach doesn’t revolve around project plans or subsidization of projects. Not all schools
participate, only those who choose to make a real effort. Participating schools and institutes earn their grants by
successfully innovating their STEM-education resulting in more youngsters choosing STEM.
MST-mentality is a communication tool to attract more pupils and students towards STEM. It categorizes young people
into four different groups (Career Techs, Curious Generalists, High Techs and Non Techs) each with their own interests
and, more importantly, values. This segmentation study therefore differs from traditional ones that usually focus on
demographics or lifestyle. This study has shown that over 76% of young people between 14 and 18 years old is
potentially interested in a study in STEM, if they are approached in a way that fits their (subconscious) values. To reach
these different groups and interest them for STEM we need to communicate and teach in ways that relate to the four
different types of young people. In The Netherlands over a 200 organisations (schools and business companies) have
started working with MST-Mentality and the results are very good: there is large increase in enrolment in STEM.
The involvement and motivation of students is essential to the success of any subject. In engineering schools it is
necessary to implement a paradigm were organizational, quality control and productivity are the fundamental
characteristics of a future engineer. Employers require that future engineers are able to improve productivity and know
how to work in teams. Students must be prepared to have a proactive attitude and be encouraged to adopt a professional
way of working. Team work and communication skills are some of the major issues in engineer work that reflect in
education. Work becomes more flexible and adaptable with PBL. PBL creates and develops work relationships. Students
learn how to exchange experiences and gain pleasure with the work because they establish their own rules. This
methodology was practical to provide students with a much more realistic experience of working with a real life project,
emphasizing a better critical analysis evaluation.

The article will tell about the practical methods such as video courses applied to communicate basic knowledge and
practical skills to the engineers. Are video materials and Internet websites with the corresponding content effective
means and can they partly replace the ‘traditional’ methods of education in the engineering sphere? Does the possibility
to share and exchange useful video material increase the intensity of cooperation between the engineers all over the
world? Engineering and innovative thinking: the role of fantasy and of the ability to foresee the future. Cinematography
as a way to stimulate practical thinking and imagination of an Engineer, on the examples of the world known classical
movies (Metropolis, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Terminator etc.). Can movies or literature stimulate the creative ability of
the modern engineer? Engineering in the cinematography and their mutually beneficial cooperation. Technologies and
techniques applied on the film set designed by international engineers.
The contemporary engineer alongside with broad general and special knowledge needs high intellectual culture, ability
to respond to innovations rapidly and efficiently, and socio-psychological competence as basic integral personal
characteristic. Socio-psychological competence reflects achievements in relations and interaction between the person
and other people that allows efficient resolving of social situations, choosing and realization of adequate strategies and
tactics of interaction and mastering of self-regulation mechanisms for successful social and professional activity. Socio-
psychological competence of future engineers should be developed in the educational process at the university or
college. The system of supplementary professional education has the necessary pedagogic potential to be one of the
major instruments of developing this socially and professionally important characteristic. Additional education in
psychology and pedagogics is an essential factor of developing socio-psychological competence of engineering
students.
Contemporary light industry enterprises function in the hard competitive conditions and therefore need rapid replacement
of goods range, high quality of complete product and fast market entry. To provide its efficiency not only modern technologies
are necessary but also specialists ready to all kinds of professional activity, able to resolve problems in unconventional
situations. They should have supplementary professional qualities and skills. It becomes necessary to integrate higher
professional education and supplementary professional educational programs. System approach, continuousness,
individualization and differentiation of education, dynamics, variability, succession and interconnection the major specialty
are the principles that form the didactic basis of educational process. Module approach is widely used and results’ monitoring
is carried out. Graduates successfully work in service, individual enterprise and big factories.

Students at CPUT and the de Haagse Hoogeschool designed and built a low cost solar heater, for the low income
market in informal settlements. The students could come up with their own design or refine existing technology where
either concentrated solar powered collectors, flat collectors or vacuum tube collectors are used. The students had to
use low cost, durable material to survive the harsh summer conditions in South Africa and the system had to be reliable
with protection against overheating. A decision was made whether a backup auxiliary supply should be used to ensure
a constant supply of hot water. The system was designed and built at CPUT and measurements were taken. A need
arose to compile a simulation program with MATLAB simulink© to optimise the system. This paper describes the different
types of solar water heaters and the modelling of the solar collector that was used.
The Shell Eco-marathon is an annual event that challenges high school and college students to design and develop
energy efficient vehicles in the following categories;
• Prototype: 3 or 4-wheel electrically driven vehicles using solar, hydrogen or grid charging as a source, and,
• Urban Concept: 4-wheel conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines.
The 2011 round takes place in Lausitz, Germany. Students of the Haagse Hoogeschool entered in the Prototype
category with a four wheel hydrogen vehicle. The group comprises 5 final year engineering and business students.
Each engineering student was responsible for certain tasks in the design of the prototype; such as the chassis, the fuel
cell, the steering column and the braking system, while the business student was responsible for funding and
sponsorships. This paper describes the intial processes involved in the selection of an approrpriate fuel cell for the
vehicle.
Desk chairs are ubiquitous in the office environment and are often prematurely disposed of because of broken castors.
Improving the performance and lifespan of these castors will result in significant quality improvement as well as a decrease
in end-user cost. This paper focuses on KEVI™ castors since they are the most commonly used desk chair castor. Computer
aided design models of the castors were created tested using finite element analysis to determine the cause of failure.
Scanning electron microscopy must be performed on failed samples to offer comparison with the computer simulation. It is
expected that the part failure arises from a combination of three aspects: lack of stress distribution in design, excessive
loading from improper use, and use of a material which lacks significant toughness. Based on the failure analysis, alternative
castor designs and material options can be investigated for product improvement.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the development of information and communication technology has initiated new
methods of doing business in all areas of social life, and therefore the preparation of new staff, which will successfully
resist the new technology challenges. New knowledge and new technologies affect, directly or indirectly the improvement
of the education system, changing the content and improving technology and techniques of teaching and learning.
However, the educational system is rigidly opposed to social development, and to a considerable extent maintains the
classical approach to teaching and learning. Contemporary educational theorists warn that if the school and the
education system are not quickly changed there will be considerable risk of falling behind developments in other areas.
Some managers are not trained enough and ready to present good and relevant presentations and they underestimate
this business skill which is important both for their work and for their career.

Chemical engineers competitiveness in international labor market depends on different factors, including fundamental
knowledge and software skills. Automated simulation of chemical engineering unit operations provides shorter terms
of technology implementation. The Faculty of Advanced Training for University Professors of the Institute of Additional
Professional Education of Kazan State Technological University has developed and implemented a 72 hour advanced
training program for chemical engineering department faculty. Its objective is to introduce mathematical software
application packages, special and general purpose simulators, which will provide new requirements to students’ term
and graduate papers which, in the long run, will improve their quality. The program introduces system analysis of
chemical engineering unit operations as basic methodology for research and development of optimal energy and
resource saving systems. A system approach is used for mathematical formalization of problems at different levels of
chemical engineering systems hierarchy and potential of modern software for solving these problems.

The paper presents case studies of usage of multimedia and webcasting in engineering education. Technology
Enhanced Learning should not be very expensive, what is proved in the paper. According to Dale’s Cone of Experience
there is a big need of multimedia in education, also in the field of engineering. Multimedia in the form of podcasting
(personal on demand broadcasting) can be very useful as supplementary tool for lectures and software training, but they
have one common drawback – they do not allow for two way communication. Webcasting in which media file is
distributed mainly live over Internet enables two way communication. Presented case studies are taken from two

Contemporary phenomena in the world economy mainly concerned with globalization of economic activity, technology
developments in the field of communication and building the Information Society. Globalization, the technological
revolution has led to the creation of a global market, which imposes specific rules for competition. This situation is
reflected in the increase in competition and the importance of the resources in the evolution of economic organizations.
They lose on the validity of the traditional material resources, and the main resource becomes the knowledge. Increased
importance of knowledge as an important success factor of today's businesses, as well as knowledge workers began
to play the key role in the enterprises. The main aim of this article is to present the importance of knowledge workers
and the analysis of knowledge management in Polish enterprises.

The teaching of Engineering in Brazil can benefit from PBL (Problem-Based Learning). The pursuit for technical-scientific
carriers is low even among those who are already in the area as some give up for the lack of background and motivation
to finish it. The country starts lacking qualified professionals on engineering and science. The present project aims at
assembling, integrating, testing, coding, and launching a pico-satellite (750 grams) from Tubesat commercial kits. The
work intends outreaching students for carriers on engineering, science and technology, mainly aerospace engineering.
Induction for prospective incoming to carriers in related areas is achieved by correlating the curricula, the required skills
and the potential applications for pico satellite projects. The cost of a Tubesat kit is relatively low and includes its launch
by a Neptune 30 by March, 2011.

The prevention and control of environmental impacts caused by pesticides has become a subject of numerous studies
due to concerns about the maintenance of ecosystems. The banning of some chemical insecticides and the
development of new biodegradable and its rational use are the most discussed issues when it comes to controlling pests.
So the precautions to be taken and proper application of each specific product is only possible with knowledge of action
and reactions that lead to such agents in the environment. This work aims to study the relationship between efficiency
and damaging impact on the environment caused by indiscriminate use of insecticides.

In recent years, the modern technology is changing the engineer's work. The engineer must know how to use the
computer in a conscious manner to design and analyze structures. The students should be able to design structures,
estimate the dimensions, make models, analyze and verify the computer results. The scope of this work is show how
to teach the fundamentals of structural design. The concept of dialogical learning can be used in a practical class.
Questions are made to stimulate the dialog. This teaching method is being practiced in Civil Engineering Course at
Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with great success both in practical classes as in the final
course projects. This practice is very important for the use of computers programs in a conscious way.

Project management requires experience, which is essential to the development team success. Therefore, experience
is essential to conduct a successful project. Because most students do not have experience when they engage in a real
project, the IMan-Age game was created. IMan-Age enables the students to put into practice the project management
concepts, which were presented during courses focused on management or administration. Objective, time, budget,
team and quality are important factors in every project. Finally, the player tends to bring his/her own strategies up. In
this way, the player is handed an important key to put the concepts into practice and to gain experience.

The main purpose of the Sao Paulo Associative Agricultural Leadership Program was to increase agricultural leaders
with wide economic, political, institutional, and social vision of the modern world. The Liderusp Program was sponsored
by the Cooperative Organization of Sao Paulo State, Learning Social Service for Cooperativism, and it was coordinated
by professors of the University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Participants were Engineers related to the agricultural
sector (B.S. in General Agriculture). In this study it was analyzed social capital formation, considering the variables: trust,
civic participation and associationism. Questionnaires were applied in the beginning of the program and after 18 months.
Results suggests improving on trust; in terms of trust on institutions, University received the best score in both
evaluations and the landless workers movement (MST) the worst, followed by political parties. In terms of civism
variable, answers suggested that participants became more interested in political questions.
In times of growing innovations, many of the technologies available already present themselves ready for the end user,
making him increasingly unaccustomed with the direct contact with their operations and electronics. Through the

The growing demand for devices capable to solve most diversified problems has led many to an ongoing effort to
improve techniques and processes. It is also noticeable a great tendency to develop equipment capable of maintaining
itself in a sustainable way, generating a low environmental impact with optimized results. At this point, one important
issue is the provision of electricity to places where this is not avaliable. One solution often employed is the use of
generators moved by internal combustion engines, or even archaic lamps, generating a high environmental impact due
to burning fossil fuels, with consequent production of carbon. Through the Bibliographic and Experimental Research,
a device that meets the needs proposed was developed. This article presents the idea of a charger with a self-oriented
solar panel, with independent operation of the power grid, with compatible performance.
Exercise is important for health and welfare of human beings, although its high demand is driven by esthetics. Indicated,
because it is an activity that brings faster results, strength training has a great demand in gyms. However, beginners
in this physical activity are asked to define a design goal, so that a strength training plan is drawn up by the coaches.
However, there are cases where there is no monitoring during implementation of physical activity that could jeopardize
the results expected at practice. To this end, a tool to aid in counting sensory series of bodybuilding exercises is
necessary, allowing greater attention of the practitioner and the discipline in the activity, as well as maximizing the
results against the goals of the training.

Since little boys and girls are often taught to divide the world between male and female areas. The result is that, years
later, some sectors are dominated by men and women. One area that shows most of this phenomenon is the area of
technology, in which the female presence is scarce. To compete on equal terms with men, women need, often going
out late work hours, work more weekends, dodge the pressures placed (husband, children, family, home care, jokes
and harassment from colleagues, boycott of his work, etc.). Who overcomes all this, is valued precisely because of that
has feminine characteristics: sensitivity, teamwork, emotional quotient, etc. Although small, there is a percentage of
women in technology that overcomes the obstacles and does very well.
The paper describes the experience of the Federal University of Santa Catarina – UFSC, Brazil, in the elaboration and
the implementation of the new centre of Mobility Engineering Centre. Aspects related to the project and the
circumstances which led UFSC to create another center outside the main campus is presented. The main reason
behind this venture is the great national demand for professionals in various field of Mobility Engineering. Areas such

the implementation of the new centre since 2009 is discussed. Other relevant aspects is also be presented.
In Brazil, the National Water Resources Policy provides as a general guideline that its implementation should be linked
to regional, state and national planning; integrated to environmental management, and suited to the physical, biological,
demographic, economic, social and cultural diversities of the various Brazilian regions. Knowing the planning unit
bounded by a watershed in a socio-cultural curriculum approach, having as main reference Paulo Freire, has allowed
us to discuss in an integrated and dynamic form, issues of joint responsibility, joint participation and co-management
processes, factors that treat the watershed as the locus where not only decisions occur, but participation and experience
of communities, reflecting the systemic effects of these unifying actions of environmental processes and human
influences. This paper aims to share the experience in a mini-course discussing the prospects for a guided tour which
takes as a guideline Environmental Sustainability and democratic processes of decision making.

The production of educational content to Digital Television is quite complex and involves a team of experts in various fields.
We can identify various professional profiles required by the media industry. Among them, the technological profile (engineers,
systems analysts, among others), the profile-related content (writers, teachers, journalists, graphic artists, instructional
designers), the profile related to the production (business and technical audio and video graphic arts technicians and others),
the profile advertising and content management (advertising, marketing professionals and management personnel,
publishers etc.) and pattern of development of content and media (computer game designers, developers, researchers and
content, writers and graphic editors, etc.). In this scenario, the figure of the educational content producer earns an
unprecedented importance, since he must master the workings and language of this new communication platform.

Current paradigms of education are no longer sufficient in the sense of including all existing students and their different
realities. Nowadays, students who cannot attend traditional classes due to specific diseases that keep them bedridden
in a hospital or at home are excluded from the educational system. Hospital schools try to deal with this problem, but
they do not have a methodology to facilitate teaching process in this scenario. The proposed solution combines two
technologies, which are 3D Virtual Worlds, and Moodle LMS, creating a combined virtual learning environment, and
extracting the best of both technologies. We tested this solution with a group of children who have spent years bedridden
at home. The results were astounding from the perspective of learning as well as in social and psychological aspects,
since it was the first time that these children could feel part of a class group interacting in a virtual world.
The formation of researchers is a process that is perfected through the construction of meant. In this communication it
is indicated the contributions of the historical-cultural school of Vigotzky who conceive the process of research in

reality studied by the investigator in formation. Finally, it is propose lines in accord with the theoretical bases and the
necessity of formation of human resources in investigation.
The research concentrates in the generation of instances of learning and creative thought that promote the technological
competitions in students of engineering. The creativity and the thought will be the commodity of the future says de
Bono. These basic commodities, or goods, are “the competitions, the information and the technology”. In order to be
able to generate value among them it is necessary to apply the creative thought. Although, all have access to the same
information and technology, the means that will allow to assemble the elements that get ready are the competitions and
the creative thought, in order to obtain a greater value like a competitive advantage. From these ideas one looks for to
delineate learning instances that are promotional of competitions in technology having to the creativity like central axis.

The challenges and the new models of higher education make it necessary to reconsider the ties between the State,
universities and society. Within this context the “Alfa III Project – USO+I: University, Society and Innovation –
Improvements in Engineering´s education pertinence in Latin-America.” takes place. This project aims to improve the
quality of professional training, which implies pedagogical structures and social pertinence ´s improvement. This paper
deals with education in Engineering through some key issues: Institutional strengthening that comes from evaluations
and accreditations, and training based on certain competences as an answer to educational needs in the actual century.
The paper presents an approach form engineers that graduated from Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales-
UNC-RA, related to their abilities, knowledge and skills acquired through the career. Another topic deals with the fact
that different views contribute to get over the systemic visions fragmented intelligence-

The intervention shows how creating a classroom environment appropriate to the development of argumentation, each
student learns from her or his prior knowledge and by a dialogical interaction with the teacher and the other classmates.
Argumentation is thus presented as an alternative for the construction of science knowledge. The willingness of students
and teacher are key in this process and in particular that both parties assume their respective roll, students as producers
of knowledge and the teacher as a promoter, guide and counselor.

The satisfaction of people's needs in consumer goods greatly depends on knowledge and practical skills of engineers -
developers of new industrial equipment. Training of such specialists in technical schools of higher education demands
knowledge of the methods of invariant optimization of technical systems while working with the projects. Traditionally
designers in such schools solve the problems of optimal designing of technical systems. Many methods of optimum designing
are known now. As regards the formation of target functions of the technological equipment there are many blanks.
People, laics and professionals are taken by several effects in the globalization word. What can the social sciences do
for the engineer-education, and how can these sciences help in the using of the skill? Who is the engineer, and what
are its exercises? What can they do now, and what will able to do tomorrow, and what kind of social- (organism)
background do they live for the sustainable development? In how many lesson have per semester are the engineers
educated in the university? (proxemic, psychology, environment–ergonomic, environment-sociology, technical-sociology,
ethic, technical-pedagogy and law, etc.) The integrated aspect of these sciences can be the basic of a modern engineer-
pedagogy. The further goal its in the presentation introduce the result researches in the themas.

As is well known, technology shapes not only the present but also and above all the future. When technically
manufactured products or systems are used, they put most of the time material flow in motion, information is channeled,
saved and / or transformed, energy is consumed, and also wastages and emissions are generated. In this way, man
changes a natural environment through technology and in parallel society also changes. In doing so, the generations
following us inherit a world that looks evidently different from the world our generation has inherited from the generations
before us. These changes are influenced to a good extent through technology and existing organizational structures,
which man accepts, incorporates and are tested and steadily modified in order to pass into new situations accordingly.
Whether the society behaves sufficiently sustainably from this point of view depends, thus, heavily from the
appropriateness of the relationship between Man-Technology-Organization.
The notion of "the pedagogical environmental complex" is elaborated in the article. Three items of the pedagogical
environmental complex are revealed, they influence efficiency of the professional competence’s formation of a future
tourism industry workers while studying "Information Technologies". The first is implementation of the pedagogical
design of the learning process through the introduction of the module-rating system of study the course "Information
Technologies". The second is formation at students of positive motivation of teachings. The third is development of
training complex, based on a modular structuring of the content subject matters (development of educational and
methodical documentation and working programs of the course "Information Technologies" including large themes and
topics, united by the nature of the material in the modules, where the constituent elements of the content of educational
material are arranged in a definite connections and relations, development and application of multimedia).
The presentation shows the evaluation of some aspects of high school studies by graduates in job market. The
graduates expressed their satisfaction with the level of theoretical knowledge versus special knowledge of the branch,
practical skills, language skills and the knowledge of theory of management and organization. The results document a
shift in the satisfaction with their study of graduates who graduated in 1992-2002, i.e. in the time after social economic
transformation in the Czech Republic and after the restructuring of the technical university.

This article focuses on the solving of questions about intercultural communicative competence. The author has worked out
the training mechanism of intercultural communicative competence among students. This method was formed on the basis
of ICC structure. The development of the definite components in the ICC structure promotes the realization of this
competence in practice. The purpose of this research is to identify reasons, which can influence ICC development and
realization. It is especially important nowadays in the modern educational process, because there are mixed groups of
different nationalities students in many universities. Different individuals bring differing goals and motivations to the
intercultural experience that result in varying levels of competence. Besides, forming ICC among adults will help intercultural
interaction among employees of a company, especially within global teams. Holding of intercultural communicative
competence will give opportunities for preventing of conflicts and will promote globalization in the sphere of education.
Modern Russian standards of Engineering Education are based on different competences, according to which the
targets, content, methods and technologies of training are determined. One of the essential competences among the
others is “an ability of self education and developing his/her own professional qualification”. However the practice proves
that the developing of the above mentioned competence requires an integral approach based on achievements in
modern Pedagogical Science and practical training of specialists, requirements of industries. One of the possible ways
of solving this global task is a special combination of the contents of training subjects and intellectual technologies of
a knowledge acquisition when developing methodological competence of an engineer.

The main challenge for Russian engineering education right now is to train competitive specialists, engineers with
set of skills and scope of professional competences that would satisfy industry demands and be recognized
worldwide. Integration into world engineering education and labor market transfers engineering educational
programs into internationalized making foreign language skills a must for future engineers’ career success. An
important aspect of professional competence – communicative competence in foreign languages has modified
dramatically according to the needs claimed, thus profession-oriented training in foreign languages is to replace
academic-oriented one. The article represents the experience of National Research Tomsk polytechnic university,
Russia, in foreign language education. Profession-oriented foreign language training model` implementation is
discussed, its organization and content specifically designed to develop engineering and critical thinking as a part
of engineering profession thus teaching students from the first year on to use foreign language as a means to solve
profession oriented tasks.

Globalization of modern economy, science and education brings to life new requirements to young professionals. The
competitiveness of chemical engineer depends on his cross-cultural competence, which includes knowledge of foreign
languages, cutting edge technologies, global market with its key players and strategies of building long-term
relationships with foreign partners. Therefore, development of cross-cultural competence through interdisciplinary
projects becomes an urgent issue in engineering education, where different countries find various approaches. A
universal model of cross-cultural competence development can be based on the experience of multi-cultural regions
and scaled up to international format. One of the multi-cultural regions of the Russian Federation is the Republic of
Tatarstan, where the main ethnic groups are Russians, who are Orthodox Christians, and Tatars, who are Muslims. The
paper describes approaches to development of universal cross-cultural competence in engineering education in
Tatarstan, at Kazan State Technological University.
Guzel Timirbaeva
Multilingualism is defined as the potential and/or actual ability to use several languages in varying levels of proficiency
and for different purposes. The aim of the article is to show how this ability can be exploited in engineering education
in Tatarstan, which is considered to be a multilingual society. More than 80% of students entering Kazan State
Technological University speak three languages, although the level of knowledge varies considerably. Using their
experience of studying languages, analyzing and comparing some language aspects (pronunciation, vocabulary,
sentence structures, etc.), cultural differences and similarities can be very efficient in foreign language teaching. Training
strategies and techniques of autonomous language learning is of great importance as well. The intercultural
communicative competence of engineering students being taught according to such model is well developed.
Ivana Simonová
The spreading globalization offers more opportunities but also requires new competences from current technical
university graduates. Now it is the time we worked together, solved problems together, and together brought the world
a little closer. That must be a contribution of engineering education towards the IT society. The paper deals with the
process of developing international engineering competences, defines and discusses the key ones which are required
from current technical university graduates in the Czech Republic. These include both general and professional
competences. The ability to work in international teams and communicate with other members in foreign languages is
crucial and belongs to general key competences, not only in the tertiary education. This topic relates to the whole
system of engineering education, so that the graduates are able to succeed on the labour market, win professional
recognition, and thus contribute to further development.
To provide the readiness` of graduate of Higher technological institute for innovative activity the innovative processes
are necessary for changing educational process. The innovative component of the expert’s professional activity
determines the unity of stable relations of subjunctive, psychological and physiological components. This component
basing on the complexity and unity principles determines unity of stable relations of subjunctive, psychological and
physiological components. Synergetic effect of professional activity mediates his competence’s degree of innovative
potential. It appears on the level of reflection of result’s activity. Readiness for innovative activity is a reflection of the
level of the innovative components of specialist’s readiness who determines the system of professional competencies.
The basis of readiness’s formation of listener to his professional activity is determined by mechanism of innovative
component’s formation of activity. Its structure reflects motivated basis of educational-cognitive activity and person’s
ambitious for improving the activity’s quality.
Here are considered the teaching problem across the sociology in technical college. Accepting the point of view of
students and practicing teachers we offer some methods of teaching and explaining sociology at level accessible to

in the practice of explanation of sociological terms for technical students.
In world marine industry (at least in Europe) nowadays we identify a big shortage of marine officers. On the other hand,
today Russia still holds a world leading position in coining well-qualified seafarers who are in a great demand all over
the world. They meet all requirements but one, i.e. their English rather often is not sufficient enough. In the Report I would
like to share the experience of running ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses for marine officers at Baltic Center
of Engineering Pedagogy in Kaliningrad, Russia. The Center administratively functions within the structure of the Baltic
Maritime Academy, which trains marine engineers, navigators, refrigeration and radio engineers for both Merchant
Navy and Fishing Fleet.

This paper presents an E-learning portal that integrates several features aiming to improve the teaching of Electrical
Engineering. It has an environment for videoconferencing, access to a robotic webcam and other features traditionally
used in similar widespread applications. It is highlighted the design and implementation of a Power Quality Laboratory
for remote access via Internet, LRQEE. The Laboratory has several resources aiming flexibility and agility in integration
of different educational institutions. It, therefore, contributes to the evolution of learning and rationalization of resources,
avoiding duplication of equipment, especially those more specific and more expensive. It makes some equipment
accessible such as programmable harmonic sources, data acquisition systems, sensors and drive configurations of
electric loads. All procedures are performed remotely using a graphical interface, thus becoming an important tool to
support collaborative learning with practical experiments conducted at distance, aiming to consolidate the learning
process.
Teachers seek the technology artifacts to make the teaching and learning process more meaningful. Virtual Learning
Environments (AVA) are configured as shared spaces for interaction, support the construction, integration and
information exchange among students. These boost the role of the teacher as systematizing of experiences,
opportunities for multiple tracing experiments and expression, provoking situations and constructing pathways [1].
However, adopting a virtual environment is providing new ways to think about, productions, looks in a constructive
collective circle that allows access and connections with cultures. To discuss the interface and the ability to design
AVAs interaction that we can not refute the thinking from the concept of "interactivity". This paper presents the results
of a research that explores the Moodle AVA, Teleduc, Eduquito, performing a comparative analysis of the tools from the
point of view of interactivity. In order to encourage and develop collaborative and cooperative work.

Simulation tools are widely used in several fields of engineering. Matlab® beyond presents a high level programming
language, it shows a powerful tool for simulation. Currently, the subject "Power Quality" has been increasingly exploited.
Multipulse rectifiers are presented as a passive technique for correction of power factor and reduced harmonic content
injected into the electrical mains. The proposal of this work is to present the study of some rectifier topologies, isolated
and non-isolated for both 12 and 18-pulse rectifiers. The main challenge of this work is helping to introduce the Matlab®
simulation tools in the multipulse rectifiers and teaching it in a simple and didactic manner. Simulation results of the
voltage and current waveforms for some rectifier circuit topologies are presented, as well as results of harmonic analysis
for currents in the mains.
Multipulse rectifiers can be used as a passive technique of Power Factor correction and to reduce the content harmonic
injected in the electrical mains. These rectifier topologies can be isolated or non-isolated; however the non-isolated
topologies present the advantage of reducing the weight and volume of the structure. In this paper, a brief theoretical
study of the 12 and 18 pulses converters with differential connections of autotransformers is presented. However, a
mathematical study was realized for the development, through the Delphi programming language, to design and
simulation of multipulse rectifiers. This application become easy and fast the design and simulation of the multipulse
rectifiers, that using differential connections of the transformers. This purpose is developed for students who not know
the structures and neither other simulation tool.

This work describes the construction of a test workbench on witch several Wi-Fi parameters and management data can
be obtained and made available to IEEE802.11 network management tools. For this, software and hardware architecture
is used and a Wi-Fi network is monitored, management data are stored in a database available to be used by some
application. This architecture has total control over all user connections, including authentication, connection finish,
connection monitoring in terms of bandwidth and allocation of different bandwidths to the users. Whith this framework,
management tools can proactively act to limit users traffic based in some management criteria (i. e. gold, silver or
bronze users; if the user is an offending for the network or not).

This work is about the development and specification of a test bench aiming to assess the parameters of energy
consumption in equipments of telecommunications network and, at the same time, check the parameters of service
quality offered by the network. For this purpose, a network with two computers, a wireless router and a network of
sensors is used as a basis to measure the energy consumption of the equipments. Through this approach, it will be
possible to subject this network to various traffic conditions, in order to check the energy consumption of the network
equipments involved in the experiment. The implementation allows to demonstrate technically and didactically that the
energy consumption varies depending on the conditions of data transmission, i.e., in relation to noise, packet loss and
other phenomena known in excess at the time of communication.

Nowardays, in the cultural context of connectivity, accessibility, the growing use of mobile devices and the availability
of wireless networks facilitate and enhance communication between people, enabling the configuration of social
networks. This kind of structure, based in the social capital, can include contemporary educational proposals and
establishes learning networks. This requires the formulation of a use strategy for undergraduate courses of exact
sciences. In this sense, the present study was based on the mapping of the use of social networks in Higher Education
Institutions in Brazil and global context, which resulted in categorization and evaluation of proposals, as well as the
technologies and applications involved. Based on these results was developed a rubric to help teachers and educational
administrators in the process of deploying and maintaining learning networks in the educational environment.
This work presents the Online Writing Practice Course, which was developed for undergraduate students of Civil,
Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Centro Universitário do Leste de Minas Gerais. The course aims to improve
reading and writing skills. The need for it was made clear by the students’ shortcomings in writing their senior research
assignments. Students who take the course use the Moodle platform with methodology specially developed for distance
education with the possibility of teacher assistance. Students write several kinds of texts and do exercises in specific
problems of vocabulary and grammar. The course also encourages students to broaden their horizons, since they are
expected to use virtual libraries, videos, museums, art galleries, periodicals and social networks.

This article presents an evolution in the model of courses in Information System for Production Engineering seeking a
practical vision through the development of a real system for a real business. This evolution can be seen mainly in two
axes: the technology - with the adoption of Web technology as a basis for the course and the use of free and open
software as tools for making the information systems viable; and the methodology - with the adoption of tools, also of
free and open software, for the creation of an environment of project management making possible to simulate the
actual environment and the management of the projects which are the information systems developed by the students.
The current structure of the course that includes theoretical lectures and laboratory is presented and compared with
the previous structure. In addition, some future improvements are indicated.
In despite of the tremendous advances in the resources and technologies of interpersonal communication available
today, when it comes to dealing with unstructured information, which covers most of the human knowledge, the
effectiveness of the benefits is closely linked to the dialectical interactions between the participants [16]. When the
focus comes to distance learning process or any kind of distance intellectual or dialectical interaction, as stated by
Reynolds [19], severe limitations remain in force due to the differences in the behavioral characteristics of the
participants. In these cases, the effectiveness is still far from a minimally adequate standard. This paper suggests a
dynamic management approach based on concepts of Memetics and Game Theory modeling and simulation, offering
proposals with the potential to mitigate many of these restrictions, through the induction of so-called cooperative and
altruistic behaviors in the social attitude of the participants.

This paper aims at the implementation of learning strategies for undergraduate, graduate, and specialization students of Civil
Engineering of Universidade Estadual de Campinas – Unicamp. A questionnaire “Scale of Evaluation of learning Strategies”
was administered in the first term of 2010, aiming at identifying the student´s cognitive and metacognitive strategies, which
together with their grades make it possible to understand the student performance in that term. In 2011 this questionnaire
will be administered in the same courses, and the teachers, with the current strategies of the students, will be able to
organize interviews, launching the Diagnose-Phase, aiming at gathering the student´s motivational difficulties, and strategies.
In the Development-Phase, the teacher will teach new strategies and will reinforce the current ones. The project aims at
strengthening the capacity of the student by increasing his strategy series making him able to use self-regulation resources.

Students that use Learning Content Management Systems may have some problems concerning the lack of incentive
to an education that leads them to reflect about their own reality. Due to most part of LCMS, in general, do not permit
dynamic content adaption, educational process aid by computers using LCMS, are in some cases characterized by an
uncontextualized learning that diminish student’s potential for reflection. Thus, it is necessary to have some mechanisms
that could help the adaptation to student’s cultural context, leading to a meaningful learning. In the actual scenario,
leaning objects delivered by LCMS do not necessarily reflect the real expectation of students concerning their
necessities about the content. In this way, this work focuses a support adaptive architecture, applied to Learning Content

Sustainability, for still being a relatively new concept, causes great confusion when compared with sustainable
development and practical tools used in environmental management, for example, cleaner production. However, the
correct understanding of these concepts is vital to its application both in development of production processes, but also
for improvement of existing ones. This work seeks to show how these concepts are presented and perceived by the
students of technology and professionals, and evaluate as the professional environment, the impacts misunderstanding
or lack of knowledge in the process of strategic decision making in business of electronics sector.

The learning process based on Situated Cognition is the result of contextualized activities, where knowledge is effectively
developed when individuals create, interpret and discuss what they are doing. It is a social and constant process, where
people learn while they interact in a community of practice. The way to build communities found by society has always
been through the media of narrative. In a hypermedia environment, user participation is effectively active, so that they
interfere in the outcome of the story. Thus, the user has the possibility to experience aesthetic categories that provide
more interaction. In this context, the aim was to ascertain which of these narrative elements make up the structure of
the Cyberchase website, whose narrative content is geared to the learning of mathematics by children. We conducted
a case study which allows a broad and detailed knowledge of the objects.

The need to adopt practices engineering in the construction of any software became apparent, but not enough to simply
choose one of the many available models for success. From an exploratory research it was found a marked degree of
rejection by the participants of software projects, to learn and use methods and methodologies in view of the difficulty
of understanding the documents provided. This proposal seeks to mitigate the resistance to the use of an existing
model in a playful manner. We adopted the strategy of creating case studies, using pieces of lego for building robots,
where participants undergo three phases: chaotic level, level and level of managed process improvement. The
conclusion of the case studies showed a gradual evolution in meeting the requirements and acceptance of the
importance of project management by participants from the second phase.

CN2 is a tool designed to induce a list of rules (pseudo-codes) from training sets. It represents an efficient induction
engine of data into simple and comprehensible production rules. The CN2e - Induction Rules for Executable Code - is
a new project that automatically encodes those rules encoded as pseudo-code from CN2 into C language. The CN2e
advantages are on the right and fast way to encode pseudo-code to C language without expert programming knowledge,
and a fast encoding free of bugs. Tests comparing several sorts of programmers and different pseudo-codes showed
CN2e as the fast and secure way to encode pseudo-codes.
Since middle 90’s, electronic scientific journal and periodicals have obtained considerable interest for researchers and
scientific community in general, which search for an alternative to publish your scientific papers in a most efficient way
instead of traditional printed paper-based approaches. Despite electronic publishing can offer a number of advantages,
as fast publishing, the editorial process of scientific journal and periodicals include a complex standard procedure,
which requires a use of a management and publishing system. This work describes the use of the Electronic Publishing
System for Magazines in electronic journals management at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in Brazil.
Initially, we described the process of adoption of this platform by periodic Mneme, pioneer in the use of these
technologies in our institution. Then, we presented the extension of this platform to other institution periodicals, showing
the advantages of using this tool in the performance of publishing activities.
This paper aims to help teachers and students by using an easy method to create simple and complex master models,
which enables in the end of its development the following topics: specification for software development in business
games, ease of model modify and review, clear documentation of knowledge applied, as well as testability and its
limited use before the development of a specific platform. In order to develop this study, it was done a survey through
literature about the using of business games, also known classifications, and its characteristics. Also was analyzed the
case development of the new gaming platform ‘Desafio Sebrae’. The two studies led to a proposal that has been tested
and refined during the development of an experimental game. At the end of this, the final proposal was drawn up.

The semiconductor area is a strategic priority in our country because of its economic relevance. Several studies and
actions are implemented through the Federal Government in order to develop this area. However, to promote the growth
of the sector, it is necessary to overcome the present situation of shortage of professionals, laboratories and licensed
tools. Our proposal is to create a new interface for teaching distance learning projects in ICs to meet the needs of
design firms and educational institutions and research. In addition to personalized service for students of engineering
and computing, the proposal includes virtualization tools with mentoring and monitoring of the teacher, concentrating
on more expensive licenses centers use and sharing of banking licenses over the network, enabling an increase in the
number of trained professionals and increased competitiveness of domestic industry. Initial experiments have
demonstrated the feasibility of this solution.

Vocational-pedagogical activity of educators of Universities is not pointed only at education, study, person development
of student, but at formation of expert of some specific branch. The aims of educators` activity of Universities should be
emphasized that they are multifunctional, so they have complex structure. They could not be realized only by
psychological and pedagogical measures or with the aid of the teaching mythology of specific branches. It is necessary
to create some synthesis of knowledge of different scientific branches. All educators could be divided into three groups:
educators with domination of pedagogical trend, educators with domination of scientific research trend, educators with
both pedagogical and research trend. The new criteria and standards of life educators’ quality and level are formed in
the modern social conditions.
The purpose of the given research is attempt to use, on the basis of monitoring the combinations of approaches in

The joining of Russia to Bologna process posed new tasks for Russian engineering education and provided additional
capacities of training experts. The model of tow-education can handicap job placement and graduates` adaptation at
modern enterprise. The Russian system of additional professional education allows creating the system of long-life
education on the basis of its infrastructure. It considers modern requirements and corresponds to the European demands
of professional education` reform. Additional students` education and advanced training of young specialists becomes
effective instrument brining main charge on the students` adaptation for realizing new functional responsibilities. The
integration of Higher and additional education is helped by translational terms (credits) proposed by Bologna convention:
they can be reclaimed not only by the context of Higher education, but with other kinds including “long-life education”
under condition that they will be accept by recipient universities. This integrative model poses new requirements for
educators and lectures.
The creative interaction of all participants of the educational process has leaded to the creation of new strategy of
development of the additional vocational education system. The main aim is to develop new system of long-life education
on the basis of the AVE `s infrastructure. It is necessary to consider new requirements of modern social-economic state
of Russian Federation and to correspond to requirements of European reform of education system. It is formed
integrative educational systems on the basis of Universities that implement different programs of professional training
and additional vocational education. The Intersectional Republic Center of advanced professional training and of
professional training of managers, directors and specialists of Tatarstan Republic implements system of innovative
education of teachers and professors of leading foreign companies and education establishments. Particular interest
is given to implementation of electronic educational technology of the AVE`s system.

The modern teacher of innovative engineering school. Educational design as a pedagogical process involves a large
amount of creative activity of the teacher of a technical college Pedagogical design includes the development of an ideal
model of the learning process. Development of pedagogical project at the methodological, psychological, pedagogical,
methodological, technological and diagnostic levels.
Main categories of engineering pedagogy are education, upbringing, and training. The professional training and
advanced professional training system enriches them with new content and makes them be professional coordinated.
The development of expert increases productivity of professional activity, but the qualitative level of professional
activity stimulates personal development of expert. There is formed in these conditions such integrative qualities of
expert as: educational opportunity, creative activity, engineering capacities, professional competency. Educational
potential supposes the system of capacious, interrelation knowledge capable to find their places in resolving of large
spectrum of tasks, and skills to realize the research of decision of creative tasks. Creative activity is highest form of
professional activity, property of personality that has attitude to work as to integrative value. Creative intellectual
potential of expert is leading component of personal potential. Engineering capacities are individual-psychological
capacities of personality.

Issues are covered here on good methods to deliver engineering and engineering technology education remotely. At
the New York Institute of Technology the challenge in delivering engineering and technology education online is
discussed. At Agilent Technologies the advantages of teaching remote engineering laboratories in engineering education
are covered for an industrial setting. And at the University of Central Florida the issues in offering free access to
technology for online engineering education are covered.
Open source technology plays a vital role in a cost-effective and robustly accessible online engineering education. This
role becomes even more vital in some developing countries where there are much engineering education demand and
where the supply of accessible technology may be cost prohibitive and not as accessible. This paper encapsulates
some of the freely accessible state-of-the-art open source technology and their applications in online engineering
education and addresses some key features of the current technology. Open source technology is not very useful
without the appropriate tools. Thus, discussions also include some open source tools to facilitate the access and the
cost-effectiveness.
Topics are covered here on good methods to deliver engineering and engineering technology education. Faculty
members in Turkey and the United States are looking at some important issues involved in automation system design
from the cognitive systems engineering perspective to propose a design framework. At Purdue University’s Calumet
campus a new mechatronics engineering technology degree with industry collaboration has been developed. And at
the University of Central Florida some selection criteria for offering online courses in engineering and technology are
discussed.
The aim in this paper is to look at some important issues involved in automation system design from the Cognitive
Systems Engineering (CSE) perspective and propose a design framework. It is believed that the cognitive aspects
involved in the design of automation systems are either overlooked or do not receive enough attention during the design
process. It is suggested that the design be conducted within the framework of CSE, including human-machine
relationships, which is vital for a successful design. The discussion developed in the paper explores the design issues
within a proposed framework, based on GST (General Systems Theory) and CSE. In the framework, a soft GST system
design approach is recommended as the “philosophical” guide for design; the Defense Acquisition Management life-
cycle model is suggested for structuring the design process; Joint Cognitive Systems (JCS) paradigm of CSE is adopted
for developing an appropriate control hierarchy.
SOME SELECTION CRITERIA FOR OFFERING ONLINE COURSES IN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
With distance learning on the run, economical advantages of online courses make offering them very popular. As such,
many institutions of higher education in the United States and elsewhere have online systems and mechanism in place,
delivering effective online education to the learners. This applies to both “non-profit” and “for-profit” institutions. Here
is discussed some of the selection criteria for choosing what online courses to be offered in engineering and technology-
related fields. Discussions also include current trends and related challenges.
A college education must become cheaper within the next twenty years due to expected inflation caused by the rise in oil
prices and an anticipated lower tax paying population growth. The baby boomers will start retiring in 2011 when the first
boomers turn sixty-five and will then constitute twenty-five percent of the total population of the United States. The end of
the working baby boomers may amount to less funding for state and federal governments to allocate for education. The
current stimulus spending by the federal government also has caused some economic unrest in the United States. Post
secondary educational administrators must frequently perform strategic environmental scans to respond to financial
conditions changing more rapidly than in any time in United States history. This paper discusses many of the current
issues which educators should become familiarized with to ensure continued functional higher education programs.

Despite the global economical slow down, the market for packaged goods material is increasingly growing. The
packaged goods constitute a trillion dollar business with a packaging industry worth several hundred billion dollars.
Packaged material requires fast, accurate and reliable machinery. As more and more goods are packaged, new
equipment must be purchased to package the goods. The packaging industry has transformed into a high intense
technology, information critical, and high speed industry. The packaging machines employ electrical, mechanical,
computer and telecommunication equipment in their design. An engineer, who designs and maintains packaging
machinery, must be knowledgeable in both mechanical and electrical fields. In the past packaging machinery
manufacturers trained their own engineers in house which took several years and many trial and error processes. The
fast growth in the packaging industry requires a more systematic and scientific approach in training the engineers.

The aim of this paper is to solve the decision problem of Instructional Designers on choosing of the best learning theory
to be used in planning of a distance learning courses. In distance learning courses, there are many learning theories
trying to explain how learning takes place as isolated, but no studies have showed a conclusive theory for working
knowledge of the student. New hybrid architecture organizes the different learning theories and classifies them into
different behavioural layers. It was developed to sort and rearrange the needs of students. The structure was validated
with 1037 cases to choose the best theory. The degree of satisfaction of students was 89% if compared to an average
of 64% in previous years. Also, the architecture resolved conflicts among the learning theories.
The teaching of Brazilian sign language has gained many adherents in recent years and among them are Doctors,
Psychologists, Educators, and in this context the area of computer could not get out, so this article presents the
Environments for Multimedia Study Pounds (AMEL ), which was developed in Java platform that has the differential:
portability, scalability. We developed two versions one for desktops and one for mobile devices, the software is to make
a feature that is always close to the users.

In the knowledge society, human capital and knowledge have become the main sources of wealth of organizations.
Faced with this reality, one challenge is to make knowledge accessible to all people. The present paper reports a part
of research that is being developed to implement the accessible learning resources to the area of graphics represen-
tation, essential in the training of engineering professionals. It focuses mainly on issues of accessible virtual learning
environment Moodle and customizations of tools: user profile, pictures and videos description, and communication
such as chat and forum. These are necessary to meet the goals of research project: to promote an accessible cour-
se of graphical representation to people with visual or hearing impairments.
The training of engineers need new methods and techniques to fulfill their role in society based on knowledge. In this
perspective, assumes importance in the course of its course to promote the inclusion of visually impaired people in virtual
learning environments. The inclusion of these web-based systems presents many challenges for researchers and
educators. Despite advances, there emerges a series of questions posed by various forms of public interaction in the
context of advanced technologies. This study aims to identify the psychological processes of learning in people with
visual impairments, as well as identifying the contributions of research proposals for including virtual. The research
has used a systematic literature review conducted in the database Scopus. The results show qualitative descriptive
analysis and synthesis of research. In the end, the discussion focuses on the contributions and limits of review, and some
directions from the research.
The learning of algorithm and programming logic is delimited by many challenges, among them, the fact of beginner
students usually do not have any previous knowledge about the construction of algorithms and the need for an extra-
class time exclusively dedicated to practical activities. Despite exercises resolution to be one of the most important steps
in learning the concepts of programming logic, most of students don't find motivation to resolve long lists of exercises
containing didactical, but not motivational, examples. This work presents an alternative approach for teaching
programming logic through the implementation of logical-mathematical games that encourage the resolution of the
proposed exercises.

In the globalized modern world, the engineer of the future should have a general background that allows them not only
to develop the core spirit of analysis, but also a mentality hinged on synthesis, with a broader outlook concerning
administration and human relationships. The traditional teaching of engineering does not answer the new demands of
professionals’ needs in this area. As such, new teaching tools and methodology have to be adopted. Within this context,
a biomedical engineering course was created at PUC/SP based on PBL methodology. In this project the curricular
organization is no longer based on subjects, as the priority has shifted to a multidisciplinary course framework in inter
and trans-disciplinary modules. The course is structured to include five different thematic areas, which are dealt with
progressively, as well as complement and integrate ways of learning over the period of the course.
Just beyond the period of pioneering a new language that provides the field of use. With hypermedia narrative is no
different, since the union of the narrative in the form of hypertext with multimedia systems involves other aesthetic
perspective within the expectations of multidisciplinarity. This article attempts to answer the question of how to
proceed when the plot abandons the linear logic required in the sequence and presents a narrative paths that lead
to alternate elements as proposed in the narrative hypermedia. To establish this argument used the concept of
narrative and symbolic content transmission designed in the context of Structuralism, based on the thought of
Ferdinand de Saussure. The research is situated in the interpretive paradigm, which seeks to understand the
processes by which the multiple realities arise, maintain and change, in a society understood from the viewpoint of
its members and not the observer.

One of the main objectives of structural engineering has been to design structures more economical and consequently
more slender, without, however, compromising stability. By making them slimmer, they are susceptible to lateral
deflections, both in global or local level, particularly the steel structures, because their transversal sections consist of
slender walls. This requires an analysis structural stability approach involving the application of nonlinear Finite Element
Method (FEM). This article presents a numerical-computational procedure for the stability analysis of a nonlinear system
with only one degree of freedom to facilitate the understanding of the students on this subject. Then some necessary
concepts and numerical implementations can be used for the solution of complex problems with many degrees of
freedom.

The twenty-first century marks a shift towards a set of social conditions that are rebuilding and producing at the same
time, new forms of learning, teaching and educational policies. Studying and researching the transformation of modern
societies from the mass media constitutes an essential factor for different fields and / or science, it is necessary to
always revisit the theoreticians who undertook their analysis to understand the logic of this transformation. The purpose
of this study is to analyze the contribution of some theorists to society.

Given the ambiguity and the growing complexity of contemporary business practices, the result of new demands
for efficiency, innovation and competitiveness, ethical reflection is the basis for organizational cohesion that has
been through the adoption of policies of social responsibility. The need to undertake, separated from an
understanding of the social totality can generate a kind of entrepreneur linked to the hegemonic discourse, myopic
in relation to the society he lives and the environment, seeking only their particular goals. Mainspring of economic
and social development, the entrepreneurial action must also be thought of in terms of sustainability. This paper,
through literature review and documentary aims to examine how these issues are presented and are problematized
in vocational training, especially in undergraduate courses in technology, pointing to educational intervention
focused on interdisciplinarity in social entrepreneurship and conception and execution of research projects and
extension projects.
In 1970, the State Education Council of São Paulo authorized the first course for technologist formation at Centro Paula
Souza (CEETEPS). The report CEE/SP n. 50/70 established that the technologist should fill the blank between the
engineer and the specialized worker, being a linking bond between the scientist and the technician. The Report, in a
dualist logic on the formation of the individuals and the different sectors of society, considered that the technologist
should be more empathized with the practical applications of theorical principles, thus more distant and unconcerned
of these theorical princples’ development. Thirty years past this report, the structural dichotomy and a prejudice
considering the technologist an improved technician or a worse engineer endure. This paper’s objective is, through
specific documentation and biblographic review, present the limits of this prejudice when confronted with the legislation
and working conditions resulting from productive reconstruction.

Learning of Differential and Integral Calculus has been a challenge for students of the technological areas in Brazil. This
paper presents a study on attitudes and behaviors of students within and outside the classroom that interfere with its
performance in that discipline in an Engineering course. For this purpose a closed questionnaire was applied for a
group of students. The analysis of questionnaires was based on Bayesian Networks, using the process of KDD
(Knowledge Discovery Date) through the shell Netic. Based on conditional probabilities, the results revealed several
factors of success or failure related to the performance of students in the discipline. With these results can be presented
to students at the beginning of the semester, concrete data that reinforce the attitudes and behaviors for successful
adoption in Differential and Integral Calculus in an Engineering course.
This work was carried out with the proposal to study the motivational aspects that work in teacher-student relationship
in the classroom in Physics. Based on informal conversations with professionals from the field observations of day-to-
school day and bibliographic research, the study shows learning objects that assist in the teaching-learning process and
motivate the student to understand the phenomena studied. Definitions are provided, from the viewpoint of some
authors, the extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, and the last had a major role in the development of this work. Shown are
also some playful activities and formal character, each with its simple and straightforward explanation, how teachers
can use these activities and how they serve as motivation for learning. Finally, some comments on the importance of
motivating students to learn the contents of physics, making him realize that this will bring benefits throughout their
schooling and professional life thereafter.

RFID is an identification technology by radiofrequency that uses devices called tags for analyzing, identifying and
tracking objects or persons. Its range of application are very wide, owing to they can be adopted for access control of
places and rooms, in human been and animal identification, in medical and many other applications. RFID in the medical
field, like the focus of this article, is emphasized, because it helps health care professionals in their patients treating and
providing agility to the processes, helping to reduce errors in this field. In a case study, the use of RFID in the treatment
of glaucoma, a disease that strikes the eyes, will be addressed. One tag embedded in an intraocular lens is implanted
in the human eye in order to perform pressure measurements of this organ and helping the ophthalmologists for the
diagnosis of this disease that affects thousands of people around the world.
The industrial development has occurred in the 60s and 70s in order to produce consumer goods for the welfare of man.
On the other hand, the environmental degradation did not been considered as a decisive factor for companies that
polluted the waters, the soil and the atmosphere. Currently, the commitment assumed by the productive sectors as
regard the preservation of ecosystems is related to the image before the community, which became green marketing
and a survival factor in the market. However, sustainable development is far from being achieved in all segments.
Therefore, this study assessed the actions developed by forty companies of small and medium-sized of Chemistry
area, using a questionnaire comprising 23 questions with five alternatives. The results show that entrepreneurs are
aware of environmental issues, but some of them fail to promote them in their businesses.

Scarcity of natural resources, increasingly government agencies, NGO's or entities involved with the area began to
worry about subjects that concern the conservation and water quality. With this vision, is need of proposition of methods
and techniques for the treatment of wastewater guaranteeing better quality of life for the population and for the future
generations. In Brazil, considering its warm climate and wide sunstroke, biological treatment processes via UASB
reactors have been widely used in Sewage treatment plant (STP). This work will be presented and analyzed data
treatment efficiency of STP Pinhalzinho which treats 115 L. s-1 in the city of Umuarama, Northwestern Paraná State, with

Brazilian agriculture is one of the main aspects for the country's economy. Because of this aspect of much
importance, techniques for maximizing positive outcomes become indispensable. For this the use of pesticides for
pest control has become very popular. But it ends up generating some problems as a result of your use. Collecting
water for supply of cities in Brazil is made basically of springs and groundwater in nearby regions. As the existence
of areas of planting, cultivation of vegetables and fruits are common in our country, appeared to concern over water
that reaches the taps of our homes. This work aims to comment and analyses the existing techniques for detection
and removal of contaminants by agrochemicals. Such techniques are required for the environmental control in water
treatment plants.
Filtration can be considered one of the major processes used in the treatment of water supply. For the improvement of
the conditions of operation it is necessary to know the particles removal mechanisms, as well as have a better control
and forecast, which can be obtained through a mathematical model of the filtration process. Both the attachment as the
detachment occurs simultaneously in the filter media and these mechanisms change adhesion forces between the
particles and these with the Grand sink. This work presents a mathematical model using a macroscopic analysis of
filtration process both in terms of removal of turbidity in terms of development of pressure loss which occurred during
the filtration cycle in the context of water treatment technologies that utilize the down flow filtration. Experimental data
were used for direct filtration of model validation of filtration.
Loss or leakage of water occurs in various components of a supply system. As the location of these specific places,
various activities are appropriate for your control and reduction. The reduction of physical losses implies lower costs
with materials and supplies used in the production of water and better use of the facilities to increase the supply without
system expansion water producer. This work aims to present and analyze the methodology applied in reduce losses,
evaluation of leaks, nocturnal, control of level indicators, equipment used to reduce the consumption of water available
in the city of Umuarama – PR. Planning reducing losses on a water dispenser system provides gain income and
decrease waste, aiming to provide water for the population, in quantity and quality compatible for minimum requirements
for human consumption.
