Job Description: Special Education Para-Professional


Reports to: Principal & Special Education Teacher(s)
FLSA: Non-exempt

Primary Purpose:

Assist special education teachers) to provide for the instructional needs of students with
disabilities. Assist in the implement of classroom programs, including behavior management
and instructional programs. Assist individual and small groups of students with their
assignments. Work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of
the special education teacher.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification
Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree
HS Diploma/Meets NCLB “Highly Qualified”

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work with students with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Strong computer skills to implement multiple and diverse programs

Experience:
Experience working with students preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

1. Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays


2. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom
3. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of materials and equipment
4. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports
5. Assist in the implement of ARD identified accommodations

Student Management

1. Conduct instructional activities as directed by the special education teacher for individual
students or small groups of students
2. Demonstrate support for student management policy
3. Assume responsibility for learning how to work with student’s individual needs

4. Help supervise special education students throughout the school day, inside and outside the
classroom; this may include some campus duties
5. Keep special education teacher informed of special education student progress/needs

Other Requirements:

1. Maintain confidentiality
2. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as
assigned
3. Read and comply with: ResponsiveEd Procedures Manual, Employee Handbook, Student
Handbook, and Student Code of Conduct.
