University men’s basketball squad
will celebrate one of its most
memorable campaigns in recent
memory by holding its annual
Awards Banquet, presented by
the Rebounders Booster Club on
Sunday, April 17, at CK’s Place
located just south of Big Rapids.
Fans and family members are
encouraged to help honor this
year’s GLIAC North Division
Champions and can reserve a
seat to join the coaching staff,
administration and basketball
team as the season’s memorable
accomplishments are highlighted
throughout the event.
Head coach Bill Sall will review
the 2010-11 season and present
individual honors and awards, with
a special recognition gift and tribute
to the team’s four outstanding
seniors in Matt DeHart, Darien Gay,
Justin Keenan and Lou Williams.
The Bulldogs’ Most Valuable Player
Award recipient also will be among
the special honors announced
during the day.
A 1 p.m. social gathering precedes
the dinner at 1:30 p.m. with the
program to immediately follow.

POPULATION INCREASED

LAKE COUNTY — Although
Michigan’s population as a whole
is down 0.6 percent during the
last 10 years, most western
Michigan counties saw an increase
in residents, according to data
released Tuesday from the U.S.
Census Bureau.
The report, detailing population
changes in all 83 Michigan counties,
showed that Lake County’s
population increased 1.8 percent,
up from 11,333 in 2000 to 11,539 in
2010.

County Clerk Shelly Myers
attributes the increase, in part, to
the amenities that the area offers.
She said many people who vacation
in the area return in retirement.
“What’s attracting people here is
the (environment) — the lakes,
(hiking and snowmobile) trails and
tourism,” Myers said. “People come
here for vacation and end up liking
it because it’s serene and relaxing.
A lot of tourism things are making
people want to live here year-
round.”
The census data also reported
population increases in surrounding
counties: 5.5 percent in Mecosta
County, 1.4 percent in Osceola
County, 1.2 percent in Newaygo
County and 1.5 percent in Mason
County. Oceana County is the only
county in the region to decrease
in population. It saw a 1.1 percent
decrease over the last decade.
Lake County will continue to grow
in coming years, Myers said,
with the reopening of North Lake
Correctional Facility. The GEO
Group signed a contract with the
State of California in November to
bring up to 2,580 inmates to the
facility. It will continue hiring through
the fourth quarter of 2012, bringing
on board more than 500 employees
by the time the prison is operating
at full capacity.
“We certainly hope that the prison
(continues population growth),”
Myers said. “Not only are we going
to have retirees moving up here,
we’re going to have families too.”
Local school districts will benefit
from families moving to the area to
work at the prison.
Baldwin Community Schools
Superintendent Randy Howes
expects the reopening of the prison
to have a positive long-term effect
on the district. Baldwin schools
has seen an increase in enrollment
since 2009, when it implemented
the Baldwin Promise, which
promises a $5,000 scholarship to
every district graduate meeting the
program criteria to assist them in
continuing their education.
“The general population is going to
begin to (continue growing) because
the prison is going to be hiring,”
Howes said. “There’s no doubt
there’s going to be an enormous
impact on our school and other
schools in the area.”

MCMC INPATIENT REHAB
CENTER RANKS AMONG TOP
IN THE NATION

BIG RAPIDS – Inpatient
rehabilitation services at Mecosta
County Medical Center rank among
the best in the U.S., according to
a nonprofit group’s evaluation of
some 800 medical rehab facilities
nationwide.
Uniform Data System for Medical
Rehabilitation, a New York-
based nonprofit affiliated with the
University of Buffalo, recognizes
facilities within the top 10 percent
in the nation, but MCMC Inpatient
Rehabilitation’s performance
actually ranked within the top 2
percent, said Suzie Pierce, MCMC’s
director of inpatient rehabilitation.
The 12-bed facility has provided
inpatient rehabilitation for more
than 17 years. The facility provides
specialized medical care, therapy
and education to an annual flow of
about 140 patients. The average
length of stay for a patient is 11
days.
“Successful patient outcomes are
not based on the size of a facility,”
Pierce said. “Great outcomes are
a direct result of the patient’s will
combined with a team approach
from our experienced and dedicated
staff. I do believe that by providing
this specialty service outside of a
metropolitan area, we are able to
better serve our community and
surrounding communities by being
closer to home.”
This is the fifth year United Data
Systems ranked rehabilitation
facilities. The group’s ranking is
the most widely used system for
documenting patient outcomes.

On Friday, March 18th, fourth grade students had their first of
many visits as a part of their transition to the middle school next
year. They had the opportunity to listen to the fifth and 6th grade
band students perform. Mr. Todd and Mr. Balch, the band direc-
tors, did a great job introducing the instruments and showing them
how fantastic it is to be a part of a music ensemble. We were
happy to welcome them to BRMS, and look forward to other visits
coming up.
