A leitura de horas na grande maioria dos países de língua inglesa dá-se de um modo um pouco diverso do sistema utilizado
no Brasil. O sistema utilizado é conhecido na língua inglesa como "relógio de 12 horas" (12-hour clock), uma convenção de
conversão de tempo onde as 24 horas do dia normal são divididas em dois períodos denominados: a) "ante meridiem" (a.m.,
do latim "antes do meio-dia" - no inglês atual, esta orientação inverteu-se e a sigla passou a significar "after midnight", ou
"depois da meia-noite") e "post meridiem" (p.m., do latim "depois do meio dia"). Cada período consiste de 12 horas
numeradas: o 12 (funcionando como zero) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, e 11.
O sistema do relógio de 12 horas pode ser encontrado na sua mais antiga versão nas civilizações da Mesopotâmia e do Egito
antigo. Tanto o relógio do sol bem como o relógio d´água (o primeiro utilizado de dia, e o segundo à noite) foram encontrados
na tumba do faraó egípcio Amenhotep I. Desde cerca de 1500 a.C., estes dois relógios dividiam o tempo num sistema similar
ao utilizado pelo relógio de 12 horas nos dias atuais.
Os romanos também utilizavam o relógio de 12 horas: o dia era dividido em 12 horas equivalentes e a noite dividida em quatro

Um parágrafo é a menor unidade duma composição prosa. Pode ser definido como um grupo de frases, relativa a um único tópico. Toda
forma de composição prosa (por exemplo, cartas, ensaios, histórias) deve ser dividido em parágrafos. Um parágrafo pode ser longo ou
curto. Não há regras sobre o tamanho de um parágrafo.
UNIDADE DE PENSAMENTO
A frase lida com apenas um pensamento. Da mesma forma, um parágrafo deve lidar com apenas uma idéia central. As ideias precisam
ser desenvolvidas numa ordem lógica. Elas devem fluir perfeitamente entre os parágrafos.

Um antecedente é uma expressão linguística que fornece a interpretação para uma segunda expressão (anáfora) que tem pouco
significado próprio. Um antecedente é geralmente uma frase de substantivo. Nos exemplos dados abaixo, o primeiro item em negrito é o
antecedente e o segundo é o anaphor referindo-se a ele.

Um apóstrofo é um endereço directo quer a uma pessoa ausente ou a uma entidade não-humana ou é um endereço direto aos mortos, a
ausência ou um objeto ou idéia personificada. É uma forma especial de personificação.

EUFEMISMO (EUPHEMISM)

Como você provavelmente pode ver, estes são todos os verbos auxiliares. Alguns deles são também utilizados como verbos principais.
Como auxiliares de sua função é ajudar os verbos principais para formar os seus tempos e modos. Como os finitos anômalas, eles têm
outras funções.
Finitos Anômalas são irregulares. Eles não formam o tempo passado pela adição de ed, -d ou -t, mas por uma mudança na vogal raiz.
Alguns finitos anômalas (must, ought) não têm formas de pretérito em tudo. Mas esses verbos finitos irregulares são diferentes de
outros verbos finitos em muitos aspectos e, portanto, eles são chamados os anômalos finitos. A diferença mais evidente entre os
anómalos finitos e outros finitos é que eles podem ser usados com a contracção N’T, que é a forma abreviada de NOT.
Dos 24 finitos anômalas, as formas de be, have, do, need e dare são por vezes usadas como verbos principais e às vezes como
auxiliares. O restante são sempre utilizados como auxiliares.
1. Tente “adivinhar” o significado da palavra no contexto em que ela está sendo usada.
Entendendo o contexto em que a palavra foi produzida, você já terá garantido metade do seu significado. Por isso, é essencialmente
importante exercitar diferentes leituras na língua em questão: livros, revistas, jornais, legendas de filmes. Quanto mais se expuser a
estas novas palavras, maior será a sua compreensão de como elas podem ser usadas.
Por exemplo, o que se entende da palavra “manacle” na sentença: The manacles had been on John’s wrists for 30 years. Only one person
had a key – his wife”.
De acordo com “The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language”, a palavra man-a-cle – (Usually plural) significa: 1. A device for
confining the hands, usually consisting of two metal rings that are fastened about wrists and joined by a metal chain; a handcuff (…).
Pela definição, ficou fácil descobrir que “manacles” é algemas. Além disso, tivemos acesso a outras palavras e, pelo contexto, também
inferimos o sentido delas. Mas qual a idéia escondida atrás da palavra? Qual o seu radical? Para realmente entender uma palavra, você
precisa saber disso. É aqui que começa o trabalho do “detetive”.
O radical é a parte básica da palavra – sua “herança”, sua origem (a maior parte de nossos radicais vem do latim e do grego).
Por exemplo: Take manual: something done “by hand” – manual labor (algo feito com as mãos – trabalho manual). “Manage”: to “handle”
something – as a manager (manusear algo – como o gerente). “Emancipate” – take someone from the hands of someone else (emancipar
– tirar alguém das “mãos” de outro). Já pensou em quantas palavras será possível compreender com apenas um radical?
Afixo é a parte que inserimos antes ou depois do radical. Os prefixos vêm antes (pré: antes) do radical, os sufixos vêm depois.
Existem menos de cem prefixos na língua inglesa e você poderá aprendê-los em pouco tempo através do significado das palavras que
você já sabe. Por exemplo:
Seguindo essas dicas, tenha certeza que não haverá palavra que não possa identificar seu sentido. É como diz o ditado: “a prática leva a
perfeição”. Assim, será o detetive das palavras para sempre.

I love reading and I’m very keen on Williams’s books. He’s an author who has written several books about animals.
He’s travelled a lot and he tells stories about the animals he’s seen. I’ve just finished his new book. It’s called “Death in the

The awakening of women began with the visit to America of Frances Wright, a Scotswoman of advanced views. Her
public lectures on theology and women’s rights shocked many people. But her example soon stirred to action great figures in
the American feminist movement, who braved the contempt of men and of most women by devoting their energies publicly to
feminism, antislavery and labour reform.
The feminist leaders were not altogether without friends. Prominent men like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Abraham

In Great Britain, a motion for women’s right to vote was introduced as early as 1867 by the philosopher and M.P.
John Stuart Mill, but defeated by men confident that the country was safer in male hands. In the more emancipated society of
Edwardian days, women began to speak out for themselves; and, when speech availed nothing, turned to aggressive action.
When arrested, some went on hunger strike and were forcibly fed. Women hunger strikers were to be released from prison
when their conditions became serious, and then rearrested when they had recuperated or when it suited the authorities.
In 1928 women in the U.S. won the right to vote. But this right was hard-won, took more than 70 years to achieve.
The 1940’s and 1950’s saw women challenging stereotypes in the workplace. Feminists in the 1960’s and 1970’s burned their
bras. Today, women work hand-in-hand with men to make the world a place worth living.
IN THE PARK
On Saturday afternoon, Sarah and Tom like going to the park. It is not far from their home. It is near their school.
The park is large and beautiful. There are big trees there. Some are old and some are new. The trees are tall and green.

worked as dustman for the Ellesmore Corporation.
When he got married, he was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he
worked for Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a fine black suit. He then changed into overalls and spent the
next eight hours as dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for
over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf´s wife has never discovered that she had married a dustman and
she never will, for Alf has just found another job. He will soon be working in an office as junior clerk. He will be earning only
half as much as he used to. But he feels that rise his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. From now on he will wear
a suit all day and other will call him Mr. Bloggs, not Alf.

Families in fast-paced, modern society face many difficulties and so they adjust to the pressures by changing.
However, change is not new in family life. In pre-modern times, husbands, wives and children worked together, on small
farms or in cottage industries or trade, each essential to the family and community. With industrialization, production moved
out of the home. Fathers went away and worked and mothers, no longer “useful”, were isolated in the new privacy of their
homes. Modern war drained men from factories, and pulled in their wives as replacements. When the fighting ended, men
wanted their jobs back, and privacy policy pushed women home again. Not all women went. After World War II, many
continued working. Jobs became the norm.
The most common type of family now is the one in which both parents work outside the home. For increasing numbers of
women, financial independence is essential. Does a wife working outside add a strain to the family? Certainly. When both
parents work, they have less time to spend with their children and with each other. Often families stop eating their meals
together and thereby lose an important time to share the events of the day.
