Abstract: According to the lesson's own William James, pragmatism is a new name
for old ways of thinking. Among the doctrinal influences can highlight utilitarianism of
John Stuart Mill and skepticism characteristic of the Scottish Enlightenment.
Regarding the indirect influences, it is undeniable that pragmatism also has
similarities with other systems of thought developed throughout the nineteenth
century, such as Marxism, positivism and Darwinism. For Peirce, pragmatism was a
theory of meaning, akin to the practices of laboratory scientists. The perspective of
Dewey, the starting point is the experience of it and its doctrine binds to classical
empiricism of the English tradition. For him, the experience cannot be reduced, as
empiricism believed, a conscience clear and distinct. And it is not merely knowledge.
Being and having prior awareness and condition it. Thus, the pragmatic truth is the
object of the current study to further elucidate the subject.
