The Democratic Resettlement Community


(DRC), on the northeast outskirts of
Swakopmund, was formally declared an
‘informal settlement area’ in 2003.

HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?

Water and Sanitation


1. Ablution facilities and people use only their self-constructed pit
toilets – means that two house have to use together.
2. There is no water supply to households as in the rest of
Swakopmund have water supply. We have the water Master
systems where people have to buy water.
3. House: Build with Boxes, wood and plastics bags
4. There is no electricity for household use. People are using fire
guest stove and fire wood to kook they food and using candle for
lights.
5. No Police station: Women and Child abuse, and rape high.
6. Clinic : AIDS/ HIV and TB common to my people

• I say One Thousand time Yes, Yes

• For the people of DRC the basic needs are very important
and is even their constitution right.
• Without basic service people can never function
normally. The Question is can you do without water or
service in your place.
• If people do not have these service we open door for
property .

• The people have done a lot public demonstration


• They have use the national television and local media, news
paper
• Even the President of Namibia also speak very strongly about
the DRC ( November 2010)
• The Youth League also speak very strong about service of
DRC people ( September 2010 )
• Erongo Region Youth Forum speak and Swakopmund Youth
Forum
• Council Budget every year for DRC .

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

• Swakopmund officials will give they monthly


reports council.
• DRC Committee will monitoring the project on
the ground.
• Site visit will be done with community and
stakeholders

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

• The Swakopmund Town Council have already approve


DRC plan. 30 November 2010 –Resolution
• A letter was send to Ministry of Housing
• 30 February 2011 – Council take resolution give people
running water to they places
• The Mayor in Report ,Council looking very much in DRC
• Ministry of Water – 15 March 2011
• Project Manager of Wimplan present presentation to
community of DRC - 19 March 2011

We believe SADC Protocol on Gender and


Development can play role lobby to Head State
what is happing on the ground and hold them
also responsible.

• This project is very important because


people will be set free from poverty and
disease.

• This project will sustain itself through the


community where they will make monthly
payments for the service to local authority.
• Public meetings will be held to encourage taking
of these services in the community and being
responsible.
