 Now that the results of Census 2010 are available the redistricting of New
York͛s Congressional, State Senate and Assembly will begin in earnest. The
 redistricting of the New York City Council and many suburban legislative
bodies will occur in 2013. The initial census data resulted in New York͛s loss of

  two Congressional seats.


In redistricting, the key considerations are that districts͞....as nearly as is
practicable one person͛s vote ͙is to be worth as much as another͛s;͟ and that
WORKING WITHIN THE LEGAL the redistricting of the legislative bodies not effectively of dilute minority
FRAMEWORK AND CHANGING voting rights.
DEMOGRAPHIC REALITIES The balancing of these dicta with the New York State Constitution͛s
requirements that districts be compact and contiguous creates a complex and
very political process. Redistricting can and will have a significant impact on
the politics and communities of New York. It is fair to ask, what͛s at stake?
