Running For Weight Loss

Many people start running because they want to lose weight. As one of the most
vigorous exercises out there, running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and
drop pounds. A 150-pound person will burn approximately 100 calories per mile when
running.

Healthy eating is the first step. If you hope to lose weight by running, keep in
mind that you'll only shed pounds if you burn more calories that you consume. To lose a
pound, you have to burn, through exercise or life functions, about 3600 calories. So you'll
need to combine running with a healthy diet. Runners do have special nutrition needs, but
the basic principles for healthy eating still apply. Try choosing smaller portions of high-
fat and high-calorie foods and eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

One common eating mistake among runners is that they overcompensate for the
calories burned by exercise with extra calories from more food and beverages. Some
runners even find that they gain weight, despite their regular training. One way to prevent
"stealth calorie" consumption or mindless eating is to write everything you're eating in a
journal for a few weeks. Seeing a record of your food intake will help you see where your
diet needs improvement. It will also keep you on track because you'll think twice before
putting that chocolate-covered donut in your mouth.

If you want to run to lose weight, you're not going to get it off by running once a
week. It's best to get some activity every day but, if that's not possible, try to shoot for at
least 3-4 times per week.

The Hardship of Fasting

An increasing number of Indonesian Muslims have begun to follow the religious

commandmentnot to eat and not to drink, from sunrise to sunset, during the yearly fasting
time called puasa. This period of about four weeks ends with the great Islamic holiday of
Lebaran or Idul Fitri which falls on the first day of the tenth month of the Arabic lunar
calendar Ramadhan. As a consequence of the calendar being lunar, Idul Fitri begins ten
days earlier each year, according to the Western solar calendar. In 1987, Idul Fitri was
celebrated on 29 May and 30 May.

The true believer wants to control his physical needs and desires so as to improve
his religious-spiritual consciousness. The hardship suffered during the fasting time should
be respected by foreign visitors and this respect should be demonstrated through their
own tactful self-control. Eating, drinking, and smoking to one’s hearth’s content when
together with fasting Muslims, would not indicate the kind of good taste advocated here.

The end of fasting time widely celebrated by families, by the community, and by
everyone in general- just as Christmas is celebrated in Christian countries. The period for
these festivies, that include exchange of presents and asking forgiveness for all the bad
deeds one has committed and all the bad thoughts one has had during the past year, can
extend to one week. Everybody visits family members, even in remote areas. All the
modes of transportation are fully booked, or more than fully booked. Tourists in
Indonesia are advised to refrain from traveling during these days of celebration. But
paying a courtesy visit to an Indonesian friend you know well is highly appreciated and
making such a call would be considered a sign of good manners.
