LATTAM
LATTAM magnets consist of ferrite or neodymium magnets bonded onto a metal plate. The mag-
netic side has several poles (North and South) while the opposite side has no magnetic attraction.
Used for any type of attachment, positions, devices, catches, etc.
The anti-slip versions provide excellent resistance to slippage.

LIFTING
These lifting magnets are made with neodymium magnets which have very powerful attraction.
Their ingenious design means they are flexible and can be used on both flat and round surfaces.
They work entirely on their own, requiring no energy source.
Note: the design of the elevator means that adherence is three times the actual nominative load. For safety reasons, please read
the product’s instructions before use.

Neodymium magnets
Part of the Rare Earth metals family, these are currently the magnets with the best magnetic prop-
erties. They are obtained by compressing an alloy powder in a magnetic field and then hot sinter-
ing in a controlled atmosphere, and cutting to final size. They are sensitive to corrosion and tem-
perature and can be treated according to the conditions of use: metal coating, epoxy, etc. Certain
nuances can, however, be used up to 180°C.
Alnico magnets
Obtained from metal alloys: aluminium, nickel, cobalt, iron, copper and titanium. This material is
cast at high temperature. It is magnetised in a preferred direction: that of its greatest length. These
magnets are mainly used in measuring instruments due to their stability with respect to tempera-
ture (– 270 to 450°C).
Samarium/cobalt magnets
An alloy from the Rare Earth metals. There are two main variants: Sm Co5 and Sm2 Co17. The mag-
nets are obtained by compressing an alloy powder in a magnetic field and then hot sintering. They
are more resistant to corrosion and temperature than neodymium iron boron magnets and provide
very powerful magnetic force at a small size. Can be used up to 300°C.
Flexible composites
These are formed from a synthetic elastomer charged with ferrite powder. The choice of powders
as basic polymers provides a range of properties: magnetic, mechanical etc.
Magnetic elastomers come in sheets or rolls magnetised on one or both sides and have a practi-
cally unlimited operating life under normal operating conditions (70°C to 120°C depending on the
nuances).
Laminated composites
Including a sheet of flexible composites bonded to metal sheet. The metal sheet provides a good
distribution of the mechanical strains and reinforces magnetic performance.

TYPES OF MAGNETISATION
To respond to varying needs, the poles may be configured in many different ways. It is necessary to
use a common denomination so they can be designated. When the magnet is anisotropic (i.e. ori-
ented during manufacture), it must be taken into account when choosing the flow line drawing. With
the exception of Alnico magnets, the materials are generally oriented according to their thickness.

The diagram above shows a hysteresis cycle with the main magnitudes that characterize a
permanent magnet:
Br: is the remanent magnetic flux density or the residual magnetisation. This magnitude is the
residual magnetization's aptitude in the absence of outer magnetic excitation (H equals zero).
HcJ: the intrinsic coercitive field. It characterizes the ability of a magnet to preserve its initial mag-
netization.
HcB: coercitive force or coercivity. This value corresponds to the point in the hysteresis cycle when
a magnet is no longer likely to provide magnetic energy.
B.H max: represents the maximum energy density that a magnet can provide. This is the maximum
B x H produced from the points which make up curve B=f(H) in the second quadrant. This value
corresponds to a determined working point. It is an indication of the permanent magnet's perform-
ance.
All these characteristics are found in the hysteresis cycle’s second quadrant. This is the part which
is of interest to the user.
53
TECHNICAL TERMINOLOGY
Anisotropic magnet
Most modern materials are anisotropic, meaning that they are oriented. When used, its design
ensures that one magnetization direction is preferred over others. Magnetic performance is consid-
erably improved as the residual flux density is virtually doubled.
Permanent magnet
Many material groups fall into this category and have many different properties:. these include alni-
co, sintered ferrite, samarium cobalt and neodymium iron boron. These materials are able to
release magnetization without an outer magnetic field.
Magnet magnetization
This involves placing a magnet in an H magnetic field which polarizes it in a specific direction.
Coercitive field
Reverse magnetic field used for eliminating residual magnetization. Magnetisation is not strongly
“impregnated” enough into a material and only remains when the reverse field has the same force.
Temperature coefficient
Indicates the change in % of residual magnetisation by °C of temperature variation from a given
temperature.
Air gap
Magnetic space between a magnet’s poles.
Permeability
Magnetic conduction capacity.
Curie point
Temperature above which magnetisation is irreversibly destroyed.
