H.202, THE VERMONT HOUSE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL:
We are concerned that reform of Vermont’s $5 billion health care industry is being hurried through the legislative
process potentially exposing the State to many unintended consequences that may be hard to back up from.
We are concerned that the proposal does not include a mechanism for who will pay for this and how much?
Answers to funding questions are critical.
We all agree that cost containment is critical and that we need to get health care costs under control. But how
does this bill do that? How, exactly, will costs be contained? Will it result in health care rationing? What are the
benefits that will be covered and omitted by he proposal?
Currently Government (through Medicare & Medicaid) reimburses at a rate below cost (40%-70%). How does
the proposal address the cost shift that currently exists?
What happens to Vermont’s program if Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements fall? How will the employers/
employees be held harmless if this occurs? How will Vermont retain and attract doctors?
Companies who are self insured could see a double digit increase to labor costs, or be forced to drop their
program in favor of the state medical plan at a higher cost. Will these companies be held harmless in this
legislation?
Will the single payer system take away the high-value insurance coverage enjoyed by teachers, state and
municipal employees and other organized workers? Or will this plan create a two tiered system, with the
taxpayers financing both the gold-plated heath care benefits for government workers, and a less robust system
for themselves?
How will the single payer system achieve its claimed efficiency benefits, when providers still have to bill
Medicare, insurance carriers offering privately-paid supplementary coverage, the insurance plans of non-
Vermonters, and perhaps carriers of high-value insurance for teachers and municipal employees?
How will two-income families accommodate paying potentially double or triple their out-of-pocket costs - through
a payroll tax - for coverage that is much-less robust than their current plans?
Ninety-three percent of Vermonters already have health insurance and half of the remaining 7 percent are eligible
for Medicaid. Is this the only option for insuring the uninsured? Why aren't we waiting to see if federal health care
reform works first.
How can a five member part time board possibly manage the complexities of a $5 billion health care system
given the range of responsibilities?

Bently is a six year old neutered grey tabby male. He is a
very mellow, friendly boy who will do well in any home. He
is a beautiful medium haired guy who is the envoy of all the
ladies. If you are looking to add a cat to your family then

Lucy is a nine year old spayed female tabby that came
to Second Chance because her owner was having
financial difficulties and could no longer afford to have
her. Lucy is a small kitty that is very loving and enjoys
lots of attention. Lucy lived with other cats and chil-
dren in her previous home and did well with both but
would do best in a home without dogs. Lucy has al-
ways been indoor only so we are requiring that she be
indoor only in her new home as well. If you have a

Stella is a seven year old black and white spayed fe-
male. She is a mellow, gentle and shy girl who just
needs that special someone to love. Stella can not live
with dogs, as it stresses her out too much. Other cats

WONDERS...
I voted for Chris Gibson, believing that he is a fiscal con-
servative. It appears I was wrong. When he had the oppor-
tunity to cut spending on National Public Radio, he chose
to continue spending instead. That puts him in the same
category as his predecessor, a big spender. The managers at
NPR make big bucks and they can raise money from their
constituents; they do not need taxpayer money to survive.
This makes Mr Gibson really stupid or very naive. Everyone knows that Publicly Funded
Radio favors the left (most of whom are Democrats, unlike the old days). There is no way on
this Earth that they will be supporting him for re-election. So, what the heck was he thinking?
Well, I know what I’m thinking. I’m already looking for a true fiscal conservative to support to
replace Mr Gibson.
Also, I wonder if Mr Gibson is still hot to trot about putting a nuclear plant in his district.

OPEN HEARTH COOKING CLASSES. The 1786 Wilson Homestead in Hebron, New York
will offer one day open hearth cooking classes March 31. A special menu will be prepared on St
Patrick’s Day using traditional Irish recipes. Hearty colonial fare other days. All meals will be cooked
in a stone fireplace and bake oven. Students will use original or reproduction hearth equipment such

MARCH OF DIMES ANNUAL WALK. GE Rutland and RRCC are teaming up to challenge local
businesses and organizations to accept their challenge and organize a team to walk in the March of

in North Clarendon. The new goal of the walk this year is to raise $40,000.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE SEMINAR Prescription drug abuse is growing at an alarming
rate and is currently listed as the third most prevalent type of drug abused. In a recent Cambridge
school district Drug Use Survey, it was found drug use had increased in 7-12th grade students with
34% of seniors stating they had used them at least once for their non-prescribed use. Jennifer Holden
of the Council for Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, located in Hudson Falls, will lead a
discussion on drug abuse trends, how they are obtained, proper disposal of unused drugs, and give
tips on securing your prescription medications. A question and answer session will follow. The
presentation will be held Wednesday, April 13th at 7:00pm at the Embury United Methodist

Ryan Esq. will offer the workshop entitled “Living Will, Health Care Proxy and Power of Attorney

I had an opportunity to enjoy lunch at Lizzie Keays, a res-
taurant located at 89 River Street in Warrensburg. I ordered
their specialty salad with grilled chicken. There were several
different vegetables mixed among the spinach greens and
the chicken was tender and tasty. Service was friendly and
prompt. Their “pear apple crisp” sounded a bit odd, but was
exquisite. Rating: Excellent.

p.m. A Greenwich resident, Sariah is a graduate of Crane School of

district. Sariah has graced many area stages and churches with her
