A LMIGHTY God, who rulest over all the kingdoms

of the world, and dost order them according to thy
good pleasure: we yield thee unfeigned thanks, for that
thou wast pleased, as on this day, to set thy servant our
Sovereign Lady, Queen ELIZABETH, upon the Throne
of this Realm. Let thy wisdom be her guide, and let
thine arm strengthen her; let truth and justice, holiness
and righteousness, peace and charity, abound in her
days; direct all her counsels and endeavours to thy
glory, and the welfare of her subjects; give us grace to
obey her cheerfully for conscience sake, and let her
always possess the hearts of her people; let her reign be
long and prosperous, and crown her with everlasting
life in the world to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who with thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth,
ever one God, world without end. Amen.

A LMIGHTY God, whose kingdom is everlasting, and

power infinite: have mercy upon the whole Church;
and so rule the heart of thy chosen servant ELIZABETH,
our Queen, that she, knowing whose minister she is,
may above all things seek thy honour and glory: and
that we and all her subjects, duly considering whose
authority she hath, may faithfully serve, honour, and
humbly obey her, in thee, and for thee, according to thy
blessed Word and ordinance; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who with thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and

THE EPISTLE. 1 Peter 2. 11.

D EARLY beloved, I beseech you as strangers and

pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war
against the soul. Let your conduct be honourable
among the Gentiles; that, whereas they speak against
you as evil doers, they may, by your good works which
they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the
Lord's sake; whether it be to the king, as supreme; or
unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him, for
the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them
that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well-
doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish
men: as free men, and not using your liberty for a cloak
of maliciousness; but as the servants of God. Honour all
men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 22. 16.

A ND the Pharisees sent unto [Jesus] their disciples,

with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that
thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth,
neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not
the person of men. Tell us therefore, what thinkest
thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why
tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? show me the tribute-
money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he
saith unto them, Whose is this image and
superscription? They say unto him, Caesar's. Then
saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the
things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that
are God's. When they had heard these words, they
marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

O LORD Jesus Christ, who in thy earthly life didst

THE EPISTLE. 2 Thessalonians 3. 6.

N OW we command you, brethren, in the name of our

Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves
from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not
after the tradition which ye received from us. For
yourselves know how ye ought to follow us; for we

N6
behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; neither
did we eat any man's bread for nothing; but worked
with labour and toil, night and day, that we might not
be chargeable to any of you; not because we have not
the power, but to make ourselves an example unto you
to follow us. For even when we were with you, we gave
you this command, that if any man would not work,
neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some
which walk among you disorderly, working not at all,
but are busybodies. Now them that are such, we
command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that they
work with quietness and eat their own bread. And ye,
brethren, be not weary of well-doing.

THE GOSPEL. St Luke 6. 31.

JESUS said to his disciples, As ye would that men

sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do
good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye?

for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to
them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye?
for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much

lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward
shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the
Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful, and to the
evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is
merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged:
condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive,
and ye shall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto
you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together,
and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For
with the same measure that you use for measuring, it
shall be measured to you again.

THE GOSPEL. St Luke 17. 11.

A ND it came to pass, as Jesus went on his way to

Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of
Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain
village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which
stood afar off: and they lifted up their voices, and said,
Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw
them, he said unto them, Go, show yourselves unto the
priests. And it came to pass that, as they went, they
were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he
was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified
God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him
thanks; and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering
said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the
nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to
God, save only this stranger. And he said unto him,
Arise, go thy way, thy faith hath saved thee.

JESUS said, Labour not for the meat which perisheth,

but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath
God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him, What
shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of
God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They
said therefore unto him, What sign showest thou then,
that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou
work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is
written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you,
Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my
Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the
bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven,
and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto
him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said

shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall

invisible; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who
liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
THE LESSON. Jeremiah 42. 1.

I N those days: All the captains of the forces came near,

and said unto Jeremiah the Prophet: Pray for us unto
the LORD thy God. And the word of the LORD came
unto Jeremiah. Then called he all the captains of the
forces which were with him, and all the people from the
least even to the greatest, and said unto them: Thus
saith the LORD , the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent
me to present your supplication before him: If ye will
still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not
pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you
up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
Be not afraid of the King of Babylon, of whom ye are
afraid: be not afraid of him, saith the Lord; for I am with
you to save you and to deliver you from his hand. And
I will show mercies unto you, that he may have mercy
upon you, and cause you to return to your own land;
saith the LORD Almighty.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 24. 3.

A S Jesus sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples

came unto him privately, saying: Tell us, when
shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy
coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus
answered and said unto them: Take heed that no man
deceive you, For many shall come in my Name, saying: I
am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of
wars and rumours of wars; see that you be not troubled;
for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not
yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom; and there shall be famines, and
pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these
are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver
you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you; And ye shall
be hated of all nations for my Name’s sake.
OFFERTORY. Thou shalt save the people that are in
adversity, O Lord, and shalt bring down the high looks
of the proud: for who is God, but the Lord?
SECRET

W E beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to look upon

this our sacrifice: that we, being preserved from
all the violence of war, may ever be stablished with thy
sure defence; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the
Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

deliver us, O God of Israel, out of all our misery and
trouble. Ps. 25. Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul:
my God, in thee have I trusted, let me not be
confounded. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and

IG 130. Ps. 46. Ant. THE LORD of hosts is with us; / the
God of Jacob is our refuge.
1 God is our hope and strength, / a very present help
in trouble.
2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be
changed, / and though the hills be carried into the midst
of the sea;
3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell, / and
though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same.

4 The LORD of hosts is with us; / the God of Jacob is
our refuge.
5 There is a river, the streams whereof make glad
the city of God, / the holy place of the tabernacle of the
Most High.
6 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not
be moved; / God shall help her, and that right early.
7 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms
are moved; / but God uttereth his voice, and the earth
doth melt away.
8 The LORD of hosts is with us; / the God of Jacob is

THE COLLECT.

O LORD our God, whose Name only is excellent and

thy praise above heaven and earth: We give thee
high praise and hearty thanks for all those who counted
not their lives dear unto themselves but laid them down
for their friends; beseeching thee to give them a part
and a lot in those good things which thou hast prepared
for all those whose names are written in the Book of
Life; and grant to us, that having them always in
remembrance, we may imitate their faithfulness and
with them inherit the new name which thou hast
promised to them that overcome; through Jesus Christ
thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in
the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world
without end. Amen.
Or

O LORD God Almighty, we give thee humble thanks

for all those who counted not their lives dear unto
themselves but laid them down in service to their
Sovereign and Country for the peace and freedom of
mankind. Shed forth upon them the light thy
countenance, and grant that they may be numbered

among the hosts of thy redeemed, going forth
conquering and to conquer with thee, their everlasting
Lord; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth
and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
ever one God, world without end. Amen.
THE LESSON. Wisdom 3. 1.

T HE souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,

and there shall no torment touch them. In the sight
of the unwise they seemed to die; and their departure is
taken for misery, and their going from us to be utter
destruction; but they are in peace. For though they be
punished in the sight of men, yet is their hope full of
immortality. And having been a little chastened, they
shall be greatly rewarded; for God proved them and
found them worthy for himself. As gold in the furnace
hath he tried them, and received them as a burnt-
offering. And in the time of their visitation they shall
shine, and run to and fro like sparks among the stubble;
they shall judge the nations and have dominion over
the people, and their Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

THE GOSPEL. St John 10. 22

I T was at Jerusalem at the feast of the dedication, and

it was winter; and Jesus walked in the temple in
Solomon's porch. Then came the Jews round about
him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to
doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus
answered them, I told you and ye believed not; the
works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness
of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my
sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and
I know them, and they follow me: and I give them
eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall
any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father who
gave them to me is greater than all; and no man is able
to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father
are one.
Creed is said (if a Sunday).
