Question 1

a) Meaning of Self-Confidence and ways to improve Ahmad’s Confidence

Self-confidence is the knowledge that you can do something and do it well. Self-confidence
comes from firsthand knowledge of the task at hand, knowing your strengths and weaknesses,
applying your skills to any situation and adapting quickly as the situation unfolds. People who
exude self-confidence know they have what it takes to master difficult situations, and they are
not afraid of failure. The ways to improve Ahmad’s self confidence are:

1. The first thing that should do is that we should be clear or our goals. What is the purpose
for us to do an activity? We shall set a goal for whatever we plan to do, and then only we
plan and try ourselves and challenge ourselves to achieve that target. It is important step
because it will lead us to create another goal and reach another larger goal. This will
help to build up self confidence.

2. We usually cope with fear in whatever things that we do. Fear is a kind of emotion
feelings that will have great impact against our self confidence. We must try our best for
not letting our fear be our obstacles for success. Meanwhile we should build up more
positive thinking because positive thinking such as excitement can greatly improve your
self confidence in ourselves for us to deal with any difficulties. We shall make this a
great motivation step to control our feelings and do not let those negative feelings stop
us for reaching our goals.

3. It is true that self confidence can be gain through ourselves, but sometimes we need
some intensive guidance from successful people. We shall learn from them, treat them
as our great mentor, and learn their success and confidence. This is essential because
whenever we facing any difficulties, we will be continued to inspire and motivated by
these successful persons. Hence, this will eventually greatly improve our self
confidence.

4. Lastly, we receive great information to gain self confidence, even we went to as many as
seminars or read as much as books about motivation, but it will not work because we
have to take massive actions and make all that things that we learned happen.

Remember the goals that we set, implement that particular goals every single day, day
and night. Revise what went wrong and try to improve it. This will help to improve your
self confidence.

b) Purpose of setting goals and characteristics of an effective goals.

1. A Goal Gives You Direction

This moves you from a generality to a specific. It’s the difference between saying you “like the
mountains” versus setting the goal of “going to Yellowstone”. It’s the difference between saying
“I want to make more money” versus setting the goal to “increase your income by 15%” or
“make $200,000″. It is the difference between saying “I wish I knew how to create my own
website” versus setting the goal of “going to a seminar on website creation”. This direction
points you to a specific place and tells you where you are heading. You can always change that
direction later if you choose but this way you are moving forward.

2. Goals give You Focus

If you lived in Florida and said that you wanted to go to Yellowstone you would know what
direction you needed to move to get there but without focus you have a high chance of wasting
time and energy. For example, if you started driving in the direction of Yellowstone and you
didn’t have a map or an agenda of where you might stay along the way or detailed directions
figured out then you would probably get lost.

By having a good goal you are focused on what needs to be done in order to hit your goal. It
helps to crystallize your goal into manageable bite-sized pieces. So, if the direction of your goal
is to increase your income by 15% then your focus could be to lay out what your quarterly,
monthly, and weekly activity will be along the way. Then when you are in that month, you will
know what to focus on. This also gives you little victories along the journey.

One of my goals this year was to race in a triathlon. And what I learned was that by keeping my
focus on each event of swimming, biking, and running during that specific portion of the race it
allowed me to not get discouraged that I still had over 100 miles to go or that I had 8 hours left
and I was already tired. I wasn’t thinking about the run while I was in the water. I know that
makes sense in a physical world example but even if your goal was to increase your income by
15%, focusing would keep you from thinking about the sales calls you are going to make
Muhammad Hafizuddin Bin Mohd Amin 2010292664
BHR04B
tomorrow while you are writing a proposal today. The focus will keep your mind on today’s
lecture in the website class and not on the lecture that happened last week.

3. Goals Give You Urgency

If there were no deadline to this goal then we might not ever get around to it. Creating urgency
gets us moving. It tells us how much intensity we must have when we move. If we were still
planning the trip to Yellowstone we would ask ourselves “which season do we want to be
there?” and then keep asking more specific questions to narrow down the time to exactly when
you are going to leave your house to when you expect to arrive in Yellowstone and then when
do you plan on leaving and getting back home. If your goal is to increase your income by 15%
then what is the timeline that you are talking about. Is it over a calendar year or is it over a one-
month timeframe?

When you set a real goal that has an end date you can use that urgency to get you up in the
morning. You can use the urgency to push you harder on the days that you don’t “feel” like
going towards your goal. Knowing how urgent the issue is also serves you because it lets you
know when you can take a day off for rest.

There are 5 characteristics of an effective goal:

1. Meaningful to You

This seems odd, “why would you set a goal that isn’t meaningful?” But as a coach, I see people
do this all the time! Make sure it’s important to YOU and not your boss, your sales leader, your
spouse, or your company. If it’s going to be effective, it needs to matter to YOU!

2. Specific, Measurable and has a Due Date

Goals often fall short in this area. Things like, “I’m going to lose weight,” are not specific,
measurable, or date specific! Losing 10 pounds by March 31 and maintaining that average
weight through December 31 is a goal.

3. The Right Size

This means it’s big enough that it makes you stretch, but small enough that you can wrap your
mind around it.

4. Written Down

An idea is not really a goal until you write it down. Writing down your goals makes the goal
concrete, makes you own it, and allows you to do #5, which is….

5. Posted and Reviewed

Put your goal somewhere where you can see it. I find it most effective to simplify your goal into
a number, a picture, or anything that will trigger your subconscious toward your goal. You don’t
need to re-analyze your goal every day, simply view it again (which is why it is review and not
reanalyze!

Question 2

a) Definition of the term Perseverance

Perseverance is a steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state,
etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, ordiscouragement. Continuing in a course of
action without regard to discouragement, opposition or previous failure.persistent determination
to adhere to a plan of direction; insistence. The quality that allows someone to continue trying to
do something even though it is difficult. For example, His perseverance was rewarded: after
many rejections, he finally found a job. The Dictionary defines Perseverance as, “steady
persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles,
or discouragement.” It simply means never give up.

b) In my opinion what Thomas Edison said he never gives up on searching on what he wants
in his life yet he make many inventions after that. His quote saying for persistence, “Results?
Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't
failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward”

Thomas Edison was a great American inventor who developed many devices such as the
phonograph and the electric light bulb. When asked if he felt like a failure and if he should give
up, Edison responded with this famous quote, "Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And
why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will
not work. Success is almost in my grasp".

c) Ways to develop perseverance:

1. Perseverance is a personality trait. If personality is compounded by two large dimensions,
such as temperament (mostly genetic) and character (mostly constructed by environment,
education and experience), then perseverance belong to the last one. All these mean
perseverance is a quality you can acquire, build and improve anytime. Let’s assume that there
is nobody who totally lacks it, but there are a lot of us who aren’t concerned about it or don’t
develop it to its full potential. The good news is that this trait is in the range of human control,
that you can improve it and benefit it.

2. Perseverance is a habit: the habit of keep trying when others give up, of staying when
difficulty arise, the habit to endure while doing something that your immediate wish is to quit. We
also can see it as the ability to steady pursue a goal, as the capacity to keep working toward an
objective, especially when the path to the end is hard. It is the skill to stay at a difficult task.

3. Perseverance is a choice, before you chorused to persevere, you was in the face of either/or,
either fly or persevere. This option is needed in such situations as goal achievement or dealing
with adversity, it must be called forth when there is a goal to achieve or a tough context in your
life.

4. Perseverance requires you to center your attention on what is in your power to do, on what is
in your control and let aside what is out of your influence. When you are doing something, there
are things that can be done and influenced by you, but also things that are outside your control
(chance, etc.), concentrate on first and ignore the last ones. Perseverance also requires
diligence, strong will, patience and commitment to endure.

5. You can take this omnipotent factor as a twofold investment: an investment in yourself,
because when you persevere in doing something to the end, despite the difficulties and
toughness of a task, you will acquire a powerful habit; and an investment in a valuable activity
and result, any activity is like a business, it requires a good investment in order to produce a
valuable result.

Question 3

a) What is Self-Esteem and its importance.

Self-esteem is the way individuals think and feel about themselves and how well they do things
that are important to them. Self-esteem is all about how much we feel valued, loved, accepted,
Muhammad Hafizuddin Bin Mohd Amin 2010292664

and thought well off by others — and how much we value, love, and accept ourselves. People
with healthy self-esteem are able to feel good about them, appreciate their own worth, and take
pride in their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. People with low self-esteem may feel as if
no one will like them or accept them or that they can't do well in anything.

Why it is important? How we feel about ourselves can influence how we live our lives. People
who feel that they are likable and lovable (in other words people with good self-esteem) have
better relationships. They're more likely to ask for help and support from friends and family
when they need it. People who believe they can accomplish goals and solve problems are more
likely to do well in school. Having good self-esteem allows you to accept yourself and live life to
the fullest.

b) What causes low self-esteem and ways to enhance it?

Low self esteem is caused by factors depending on the background and status of the person,
his surroundings, age, association with the outside world, etc. To be able to successfully deal
with these problems, one has to first determine the causes of lowered self esteem. The best
way to deal with any problem is to look at the mistakes made in the past.

•Negligence: Children brought up in conditions where love and affections is lacking, feel
abandoned and insignificant as they grew up. They find it very difficult to trust people and mix
up with them.

•Excessive Criticism: When a child is constantly reminded that he is no-good, it results in

depression and the child loses his self confidence. Such events create a feeling of
worthlessness, making them pessimistic and hesitant from doing anything positive.

•Influence of Parents and Family: Parents tend to influence a child with the reflection of their
unfulfilled dreams. They make the mistake of choosing a career that the children are not happy
to follow.

•Achievements: People work to achieve success in their life and when they fail after working
hard, they treat failure as the ultimate truth which results in loss of self esteem.

•Physical Appearance: The physical impression of a person is very important as it is the most
influential. People with bad looks feel inferior when compared with a better looking person.
These create a feeling of repulsion, which isolates them from an active social life.
Muhammad Hafizuddin Bin Mohd Amin 2010292664
BHR04B
•Negative Experience: Some low self esteem issues are caused due to negative experience.
Children tend to take in the negativity around them. Adults to indulge in certain activities that
can harm a person’s self-esteem.

•Child Abuse: Most people with low self esteem have a history of both physical and mental
abuse during their childhood. Abuse of physical nature, including sexual abuse, can be treated
to an extent, however, mental abuse is deep rooted and extremely difficult to treat. The most
likely culprit of child abuse is family friends, relatives, neighbors, and strangers and foster or
step parents.

•Unemployment: A person who is unemployed feels useless and helpless. The failure to provide
for their family creates a feeling of low self esteem.

Steps to Improving Self-Esteem

Try to stop thinking negative thoughts about yourself. If you're used to focusing on your
shortcomings, start thinking about positive aspects of yourself that outweigh them. When you
catch yourself being too critical, counter it by saying something positive about yourself. Each
day, write down three things about yourself that make you happy.

Aim for accomplishments rather than perfection. Some people become paralyzed by
perfection. Instead of holding yourself back with thoughts like, "I won't audition for the play until I
lose 10 pounds," think about what you're good at and what you enjoy, and go for it.

View mistakes as learning opportunities. Accept that you will make mistakes because
everyone does. Mistakes are part of learning. Remind yourself that a person's talents are
constantly developing, and everyone excels at different things — it's what makes people
interesting.

Try new things. Experiments with different activities that will help you get in touch with your
talents. Then take pride in new skills you develop.

Recognize what you can change and what you can't. If you realize that you're unhappy with
something about yourself that you can change, and then start today. If it's something you can't
change (like your height), then start to work toward loving yourself the way you are.

Set goals. Think about what you'd like to accomplish, and then make a plan for how to do it.
Stick with your plan and keep track of your progress.
