RA Rational Achievement

2-4 players

Objective: provide students help in visualizing rational functions.

Materials: game mat for students, factor cards, achievement cards.

Setup: shuffle the factor cards and place them in a stack. Shuffle the achievement cards and place
them face down in an array. Each player needs a starting rational function:

1
f (x) = 1
Gameplay: Players take turns altering their function and acquiring achievements. They draw factors
from the center and then play or discard them. A player wins by getting at least 20/(number of players)
achievements. As you play there will be revealed and unrevealed achievements, the deck of factors,
and discarded factors which should be displayed face up.

Turn:
● reveal a new achievement.
● draw a factor OR you can trade two factors in your function for a discarded factor.
● with your new factor you may either put it in your function, replace a factor (the replaced factor
goes to the discard pile), or discard the factor.
● if your function satisfies a revealed achievement, you may
collect it. At most one achievement per turn. Note: some
achievements

Notes: read graphs from left to right. So the achievement “+1:

graph is positive then negative” means something like the graph at
right.

Feedback, please!:
● Clarity of rules
● Factor selection
● Ideas to hit with achievements. What are your rational function objectives?
● Win condition and gameplay.
● Google docs editing for format. I am a neophyte.
