Helping Hands announces progress on building fund
Helping Hands is thrilled to announce the receipt of
a very sizable donation from an anonymous donor to its
building fund. The recent donation was in the amount of
$15,000 and has brought the building fund balance up to
just over $28,000.
Fred C. Plath, treasurer of Helping Hands stated that
this donation will help move the overall project forward.
The demolition of the old hotel building on site is expect-
ed to be complete by early June.
The start of construction is dependent on the receipt
of adequate funds for construction. While an overall bud-
get is not yet complete, the facility is expected to be ap-
proximately 3,200/sf which will help the Helping Hands
ministry expand its vision and continue its more than 20
years of service to the community.
Helping Hands also is excited about its new website.

The website also has a way for donors to make donations
directly to the Helping Hands ministry through a secure
PayPal portal.
While more information will be coming in the next
few weeks, Helping Hands will also be holding a “Miracle
Sunday” service on Sunday evening June 12th in Ens-
ley Park. This service will involve many of the Helping
Hands supporting churches and is intended to serve as a
fundraiser for the building project.
The Helping Hands board of directors is thankful to
the entire community for the faithful support that is giv-
en to support this ministry outreach.
They will soon enter their 22nd year of service to the
community.

Snyder’s proposed budget impacts Tri County Area Schools

Governor Snyder has proposed a state
budget that will create challenges for
Tri County Area Schools. The proposal
calls for a $470 per student reduction in
the amount of funds we receive for each
student’s education. We are anticipating
a decrease of $1,482,346 in our funding
from the state. Added to the loss of state
funding, we will have a loss of $585,400
in federal funding. This is a total reduc-
tion in revenues of $2,067,746.
We also need to consider additional
costs as we plan our budget for next year.
The amount schools are currently man-
dated to contribute to the employee’s
pension fund is expected to cause an in-
crease of $380,000 for Tri County Area
Schools. We project contractual pay in-
creases will be approximately $200,000.
We also project a $230,000 increase in
Health Insurance costs. We anticipate an
increase in interest costs of $50,000 to
pay for borrowed money to meet payroll
and expenses. We also project an addi-
tional cost of $25,000 for diesel fuel for
our bus fleet. This is a total increase in
costs of $885,000.
The total impact of reduced revenues
and increased cost is $2,952,746. We also
must consider that for the current school
year we are using $283,080 of fund eq-
uity to balance our budget for everyday
operational costs, so the total impact for
next year is $3,235,826. If we do not re-
duce our expenses this would result in our
costs exceeding revenues and fund bal-
ance by approximately of $741,249, which
is not allowed by law.
The impact of this information is very
difficult to understand. The school board
must work to develop a budget that is bal-
anced in order to comply with current
school law. To do nothing would be cata-
strophic.
For this school year the school board
had to reduce many positions and reduce
programs. The school board has budgeted
conservatively for many years to be able
to weather difficult financial times. The
current financial times are much more
difficult that ever expected and will re-
quire the school board to make additional
reductions and adjustments to school
budget.
There are two meetings scheduled
to receive input from the community
regarding this very serious situation
schools throughout Michigan are deal-
ing with. These meetings are scheduled
for Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. and
Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. Each of
these meetings will be held at the Board
Room in Sand Lake.

Stephen J. Linderman
Stephen J. Linderman graduated
from the U.S. Army Warrant Officer
Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Dale-
ville, Ala., and was appointed to the rank
of warrant officer one.
The student completed an intense
six-week course conducted in a very de-
manding, rigorous, high-stressed, and
deadline-required environment. The
candidate received training in leader-
ship skills, Army customs, doctrine, tra-
dition, and tactics, drill and ceremonies,
professional ethics, physical fitness,
time-stress-people management skills,
decision making, delegation and person-
nel skills, and numerous other military
academic subjects.
Students gain experience in leader-
ship to attain higher responsibility while
maintaining professionalism and qual-
ity work performance and standards
required of career warrant officers. Ad-
ditionally, candidates develop and hone
skills relevant to an Army at war, skills
required to effectively operate and sur-
vive on today’s ever-changing battlefield
operations against global terrorism.
Warrant officers continue to further
their training through technical and tac-
tical certification. As the officers gain
progressive levels of expertise and lead-
ership, they operate, maintain, adminis-
ter and manage equipment, support ac-
tivities or technical systems throughout
their Army career. They are highly spe-
cialized technical and training experts
in their career specialties whom provide
valuable skills, guidance and expertise
to commanders and organizations. War-
rant officers serve in the Regular Army,
National Guard or Reserve to fulfill their
military service obligation.
Linderman, an information systems
technician with four years of military

He is the son of Ernie and Donna Ad-
ams of Cedar Springs.
His wife, Nadia, is the daughter of
Ken Andrus, and Ruth Andrus, both of

Society holding first
meeting of 2011
The Howard City Area Historical
Society will have their first meeting of

the Panhandle Building, 1401 South

old postcards and photographs. We are
looking for pictures of the following:
the railroad water tower, World War II
memorial that was in the park next to
the present library, Wood Lake Sawmill
& Ice House, Grange Hall, sawmills,
dams on Tamarack Creek, potato ware-
houses and other historical pictures of
the area.
All pictures will be scanned and re-
turned to the owners. Pictures may be
left at the Reynold’s Township Library

appoints new direc-
tor
The Kent District Library is pleased

Werner to serve as new Director of the
Kent District Library in Kent County,
MI. Werner currently serves as Director
of the Capital Area District Library in
Lansing, MI, and previously worked as
Library Law Specialist at the Library of
Michigan. He earned a B.A. in Psychol-
ogy from the University of Northern
Colorado, a J.D. from Michigan State
University, and an M.L.I.S. from Wayne
State University.

George Bunn, 75, of Howard
City, went home to be with his Lord
and Savior on March 28, 2011, at
his residence.
He was born Jan. 9, 1936,
in Walker Township, the son of
George and Elizabeth (Field)

case for 35 years
before retiring
in 1994. Dur-
ing the Korean

served with the
U.S. Marines.
He loved cook-
ing and the

active member.
Surviving are his wife Carol,
whom he married in 1989. Also
surviving are his children, Robin
Bunn of Belmont, Cathy Bielecki of
Wyoming, Karen (John) Sanford of
Sparta, George Bunn Jr. of Walker,
Dennis Bowman of Grand Rapids,
Tami (Roger) VanDam of Grand
Rapids, Todd (Bev) Bowman of
Walker, Melanie Bowman of Grand
Rapids, Shawn (Kara) Bowman of
Jenison and Joel (Tina) Bowman
of Walker; 14 grandchildren, sis-
ter, Pat Street of Manistee; and
several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his par-
ents and two brothers, Dennis and
Richard Bunn.

day at 4 p.m. at the Heritage Unit-
ed Methodist Church with Pastor

GREENVILLE — An annual study released this week by
Thomson Reuters recognized Spectrum Health Grand Rap-
ids and Spectrum Health United Hospital as being among
the 100 best hospitals in the country based on measures of
overall organization performance, including patient care,
operational efficiency, and financial stability.
Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville was
named one of Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®.
United Hospital is the only small community hospital
(under 100 beds) to receive this elite honor and recogni-
tion within the region. In total, 924 small community hos-
pitals were included with the nationwide survey. Of those
surveyed, only 20 were selected as award recipients in this
category, of which one is Spectrum Health United Hospital.
This distinction is awarded because of the Thomson Re-
uters’ annual study that examines changing performance
levels in U.S. hospitals and objectively identifies hospitals
based on their overall performance. The winners were an-
nounced in the March 28 issue of Modern Healthcare maga-
zine.

ing commitment to superior quality and patient satisfaction
at lower costs as compared to the majority of other hospitals
in the nation. To be named one of the top 100 hospitals in

The Thomson Reuters study evaluates performance in
10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety,
average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient sat-
isfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-
discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myo-
cardial infarction, heart failure and pneumonia. The study
has been conducted annually since 1993.
To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Thomson Re-
uters researchers evaluated 2,914 short-term, acute care,
non-federal hospitals. They used public information - Medi-
care cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review
(MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction
data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply,
and winners do not pay to market this honor.
If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care
as those treated in these 100 Top Hospitals award winners:
Nearly 116,000 additional patients would survive each
year.
More than 197,000 patient complications would be
avoided annually.
Expense per adjusted discharge would drop by $462.
The average patient stay would decrease by half a day.
If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the
impact would be even greater.

Shortly after the explosion, the son
of a Sand Lake man was called upon
to provide recovery support in the sur-
rounding area. He played a vital role
in getting a devastated community
through the aftermath of destruction
that was once unthinkable.
The attack was a mock one, but

Meditation and Relaxation

One of the tools we can learn to use to help us deal with the memories of past physical and emotional trauma
is Meditation and Relaxation.

Don’t Forget…
In the early 1980’s I was working in the plant medical department at Diesel Equipment, one of the General
Motors factories in Grand Rapids. The job was very stressful. I had developed an ulcer and had high blood
pressure. The weekend fun of sailing, partying with friends, and excessive drinking was making things worse
instead of better.

Deadlines I realized that I did not know how to relax; I did not know how to slow down my mind and let my body
recharge and rejuvenate. I decided to attend a four hour class to try to learn how to relax. Although I was
skeptical, it turned out to be one of those life changing experiences.
for River Valley News Shopper For the first time in years, I realized that the pressure I had in my chest was not normal. With the daily practice
of the mental training exercises I had learned, the blood pressure returned to normal and the ulcer healed.
The effects of this was so profound, I decided to explore further. I took a training program call “The Silva
News & Editorial - Tuesdays at Noon Method”. This was a four day course targeted at teaching people to learn to use their own minds for the benefit
of their own health.
We had learned to meditate. Meditation is a way to relax the body and recharge all the chemicals that are
constantly being used up. I had always viewed meditation as something strange and odd. I had seen pictures of
Area Happenings, Here’s My Card, the Guru with folded arms and legs, chanting in a blue haze of incense. In reality it is very
different.
Business/Church Directories - Meditation has three parts. The Induction helps us change quickly from an active, awake

pictures and statements, much like daydreaming. When we mentally see ourselves at an
ideal place of relaxation, our brain thinks we are actually there and it begins to manufacture
