Operation Babylift: Retired Air Force
nurse recalls horrific airplane crash
BY DAVID L. BARBER
MANAGING EDITOR
Focus.
For all the medical
training nurse Regina
Aune possessed, for all the
emergency crisis practice
she’d gone through, it was
her ability to focus that
saved her life, and the lives
of many, many children
on that hot, humid day in
Vietnam in 1975.
Even as the mammoth
military aircraft she was
riding in was plummet-
ing to the earth, she was
able to focus on the task at
hand — staying calm and
under control.
Even as that cargo
plane was bouncing
through a rice paddy — all
the time being ripped apart
at nearly every seam — the
young lieutenant was able
to focus on positioning
herself, and others around
her, to survive the crash.
Then a few mintues
later, even as she was seri-
ously injured with deep
lacerations, a broken foot
and more, she was able to
focus on a tiny silhouette
that was trying to crawl
from the burning plane.
