New England Wind is assessing whether there is sufficient support for a community
wind farm in the Tablelands.
The study includes specialist legal, governance and policy research to look at
structures, business and investment models.
Mr Blakester said particular attention was being paid to Hepburn Wind in Victoria,
who are Australia’s first community wind farm and started construction of their two
turbine wind farm two weeks ago, after almost six years
of work.
“The findings from the Glen Innes and other community forums will directly shape the
options considered for the community wind farm,” Mr Blakester said,
“Including answering the question whether there is sufficient support to proceed
further
or not.
“We describe this community process as collaborative and participatory planning,
where we are actually designing the project together.
“This is very different to the traditional approach taken with development where
community is ‘consulted ’ and nothing much changes at all.”

Mr Blakester said the New England
Tablelands was a designated priority area for the development of wind power and is
one of
six NSW Government ‘Renewable Energy Precincts’.
“More than 1000 commercial wind turbines have already been approved and almost
1000 more are in the early stage of planning processes, ” he said.
