"I worked in a family-owned funeral home, did general duties around the house.(S/M- House?) Well, the whole place was a big house..there was an apartment upstairs, they pay you $5 a night to stay there, plus when you do a removal they give you another $5. After a while, you get rather anxiety stricken- you'd be sleeping and the phone would ring, I'd just go, "I hope it's not that". You start getting paranoid about it- you know, getting up at 3o'clock in the morning having to put on a suit and go pick this body up someplace- usually at a hos- pital, or wherever they found them. Not too pleasant of an awakening. My first pickup was this old lady ip a hospital bed, her thighs were about(5" in diameter)...didn't even use a hearse on that one, we just used a station wagon. I didn't know what to expect, well, I guess there's no way of knowing until you've done it..we go in, and take the "death cot"(like an ambulance stretcher, with a vinyl bag and a rubber sheet) with us...she had a gaping mouth, no teeth- just this gaping hole of a mouth. I didn't even want to go near her, it was disgusting! So the guy I was with said, "Help me turn her over.", So I tried to roll her over by her flannel "nitie"; he just grabbed my hands from there and just stuck 'em on her flesh! After that when I went home, it seemed like I just couldn't wash my hands enough. Well, after a while you get pretty much used to it...(S/M- pick up the body with one hand and eat a sandwich with the other?) Wo...bul 1 know a guy that beat a dog to death while eating a ham & cheese sand- wich! (S/M- You've got great friends!)..it's someone you know as well!// The suicide cases weren't too pleasant, oither. We went to this*one. house where this like, 20 year-old guy, just a wasted life anyway...had this sheet over him, and this "lake" of blood at his feet. There wis this cop standing out- side the door looking pretty sick.’ We pick this guy up and.. this stringy blood was clinging to the chair he was in, that looked... There was this scandal about him later on, the gun he shot himself with was there- this .22 rifle that had boen cut off at the barrel where the hand grip ended, and the stock had been cut off also, so it looked like a dueling, pis- tol...It turns out that the guy he got the gun from had cau- ght him in bed with the other guys' wife- so he told him; “either you kill yourself, or else I'm going to kill you", and then he sold him the gun!...got real drunk and blew him- self away.// There was this body we called "Hattie in a Box", she was real disgusting! She was old, and had cellulite on every portion of her body- shaped like a torpedo, with no coloration whatsoever. She had a slit from the base of her throat all the way down to her pubic line- when they autopsy, they take the organs out for examination, and when they're done, they stick 'em in plastic baggpps. F and put the bags back in the chest c cavity, then sew it back up. At any rate, when they sewed her up, the seam didn't match right, so the skin was sticking up with the stite+ hes pulled tight. You could see the bright white fat, and the bloody looking red flesh, that looked like a fresh cut of meat or something. We took her back to the funeral home and had to put her in a crema-}, tion tray(a cardboard box, with a piece of particle board and a plas- tic liner in the bottom. They have praying hands stenciled on the cover..). When she came back a few days later she was'all neatly wrapped in a plastic bag inside this like, 6 by 8 inch box. "Hattie in a box", she only weighed about 10 or 12 pds. then, with her name on a nice white label. // One time I was down in the prep room witt this other guy, and he said, "Do you smell something?", Of course I said, "NO, I don't smell anything!". He was real gung-ho about it though- so he ended up taking these forcips and opening up this corpses! (anus), cleaning inside with sort of like giant swabs- things to dot//After they got the body on the prep table... this table had like these stainless steel lips around the edges, blood gutters..it tilted over the sink so when you made the cuts on the arteries and started pumping out the blood with this thing, this pump which looked not unlike an electric blen- der, the blood would run out into the drain. Embalming fluid sort of pushes the blood out, until you get just straight em- balming fluid...then they just sewed ‘em back up. I remember being upstairs above the prep room, and hearing water splash below, but it wasn't really water.//The first thing I had to do when I came in, in the morning was to check to see if the bodie: had changed facial expressions or purged blood...once someone stole a casket from the house! Someone found it beside the road and called the police thinking there might be someone inside of it.//The preparer used this instrument called a trocar, which is basically a huge hypodermic needle connected to that same kind of pump I talked about earlier. You take this thing and ram it into the stomach, around where the belly button is, and pierce all of the internal organs to fill them with embalming fluid. It looks pretty freightening when they shove this thing in, because they have to use such force, the body kind of con- vulses, which makes the person appear to be alive. AM A eS When I was no more than five years-old, I watched the origina: version of "The Time Machine" late at night with my family. i remember a hole in the earth where creatures toiled on some sort of machinery, which made a rhythm of pounding, crashing metal. I heard this rhythm in my head every night before I fe: to sleep for years following. I haven't heard anything that captures that sound and feeling more thouroughly than the new SPK album, Leichenschrei (translation- Screaming corpses). On previous SPK werks the sheer magnitude of dense, screeching synth./etc. grabbed your neck and held you until the spiral track let you loose. On this new LP different aggressive, prir itive rhythms pound your head, and slap your face with a leather strap. The undead rise to chant and scream, I haven't been this distraught over a piece of vinyl since T.G.s D.0.A.; with this much intense, violent energy a small group of Walkm equipped terrorists could overthrow continents(yes, I am very excitable..)! Perhaps the final, tortured scream that ends th: assault will from now on, be bidding me goodnight. Discography SPK- No More/Contact Germanik EP (ed. 500 Side Effects Rec.) F D- The others went there. I went! to Alkatraz. i S/M- Will you be showing any video when you tour? D- We've got quite a few videos, but unfortunately it's a diff- erent format. We use (-?-), a German system. But we have got films, super 8- and slides, which are very unusual. S/M- Are you planning on doing soundtracks for other peoples videos in addition to your own?, D- Oh,..no, basically our own. We're not really interested in doing other peoples', I mean, we have the facilities, perhaps if anything's interesting enough. We did a little thing with Mark Pauline the other day- he's a very interesting chap.. S/M- Is anything you have done with video available presently? D- It's difficult to get what we've done so far transferred. Eventually we would like to have some sort of an American distribution as far as our videotapes are concerned, but at this stage we haven't got the facilities to duplicate them. S/M- What personnel does the band consist of now? D- I'm in charge of the visuals. There's two people on stage, and a mixer. S/M- What will be the album to be released in England? D- There's a tentative working title of something like, The Last Atempt At Paradise, but we haven't really decided on anything as of yet. S/M- Will this be the final SPK album, then? D- We might do sort of a soundtrack type thing, -there's some possibility of a live album. S/M- I was disgpointed to hear that you tried out infra/ultra * sound on an audience in Australia, and nothing came of it... D- It just sort of destroyed this guys' p.a., that's all it really acheived.
