Clarendon. The new goal of the walk this year is to raise $40,000.

• FREE SPRING WORKSHOPS FOR ALL AGES AT THE
CCC. During the upcoming spring break, students between the
ages of 5 to 18 will have the chance to participate in creative
workshops at the Courthouse Community Center in Salem at no
charge. For younger children between the ages of 5 to 8, Simple
Weaving with instructor Jane Gibson will provide the opportunity
to learn basic weaving techniques on individual metal looms. On
Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20 from 9:30 to noon,
participants will weave pot holders which may be used for
Mother’s Day gifts. Older students between the ages of 8 to 18
may enroll in Basket Making with instructor, Ginny Sword. This
workshop offered on Wednesday, April 20 from 9 – noon provides
brightly colored reeds students will use to create lovely spring
baskets. Students interested in participating in these free
workshops should register at the CCC. The CCC has partnered
with Cornell Cooperative Extension once again to provide 3 free
beneficial workshops sponsored by EmPower New York. Save
Energy, Save Dollars will be offered on Thursday, April 21 at
6:30 pm. Explore methods to reduce energy bills through no-
cost/low-cost energy actions. On Thursday, May 5 at 6:30 pm,
participants of Making Ends Meet will learn about community
resources that will enhance their financial situation – free money
management tools will be provided. The final workshop of the
series, Exploring Credit/Debt Management, will take place on
Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 pm and will provide strategies for
using credit wisely, paying debt down and improving credit scores.

“Grow Native: Gardening with Native Plants” by Emily DeBolt,

Hartford. Emily will discuss the many benefits of gardening with
native plants and introduce you to a few of her favorites for
North Country gardens.

HEALTH DAY. The Salem Area Woman’s Club and Glens Falls
Hospital will host the 17th Annual Women’s Health Day “By
Women-For Women” at Salem Washington Academy on Saturday
April 30th. In addition to the keynote speaker, participants will
choose three of the six workshops that will be offered throughout
the full day event. Diane Whitten will present the workshop
Eating for a Healthy Heart. Lifestyle changes, including changes
to diet, can significantly reduce a woman’s risk. This workshop
will explore wellness foods that actually promote heart health
which one can include in his or her daily or weekly diet. Participants
will complete a brief heart disease risk assessment and go home
with some delicious recipes to begin their journey to a healthy
heart. Diane Whitten is a nutrition educator for Cornell
Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County where she has worked

Operation Program & ATV Safety Workshop on April 19-20 at

have a Tractor & Machinery Operation Certificate when employed
on farms and other agribusiness that requires operating equipment.

•19TH ANNUAL WASHINGTON COUNTY FIBER TOUR,
which will take place this year on 13 different farms and fiber
processing facilities across Washington County, NY, April 23 &
24. The event is free and open to the public; and will generally
run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Check the website
www.washingtoncountyfibertour.org for specific hours of each
tour stop, as some will be open Saturday only or are planning to
open later on Sunday. The Fiber Tour, and most events at the
individual farms and facilities, will take place rain or shine - so
dress for the weather. Farmers across the county will open their
barns, fields, and shops to allow visitors of all ages to meet their
sheep and lambs, alpacas, llamas, and rabbits. Join them to learn
about breeding and raising fiber animals including shearing and
fiber processing. Some farmers will also demonstrate how they
spin, dye, felt or weave with their animals’ fibers. Visitors can
purchase beautiful fiber products at the farms including soft shorn
fleeces, roving for spinning, yarn and supplies for knitting and
crocheting, fiber carding and spinning equipment, and handmade
items such as felted scarves and knitted socks. In addition, some
of the participating farms and facilities will offer other activities
such as fun projects for kids, tips for evaluating and selecting
fleeces for fiber projects, needle felting workshops, and drop

HEALTH DAY WORKSHOP. The Salem Area Woman’s Club
continues to prepare for the 17th Annual Women’s Health Day
“By Women-For Women” to be held on Saturday, April 30th at
Salem Washington Academy. Erika Sellar Ryan Esq. will offer
the workshop entitled “Living Will, Health Care Proxy and Power
of Attorney Forms: What you need to know to ensure that your
wishes are respected, your assets are managed and your family
has peace of mind.” Attorney Sellar Ryan will discuss each form
in detail, describing the benefits and drawbacks of each form and
the appropriate situations for each. She will also dispel common
misunderstandings about them. In addition to highlighting the
implementation of each form and the appropriate procedure for

•MASTER GARDENER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD. The
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Washington County Master
Gardener Volunteers are offering their annual Master Gardener
Scholarship Award to students interested in horticulture,
agriculture, environmental studies, forestry or related fields. This
up to $400 award is available to students that are Washington
County residents. The students must be current High School
seniors or be currently enrolled in an accredited, post-secondary
educational institution majoring in the above mentioned areas.
Applicants must complete the application in FULL; enclose
documented proof of acceptance into program of study or proof
of current enrollment, and return all requirements to the
Scholarship Award Committee by May 6, 2011. All applications
will be reviewed by the Scholarship Award Committee. Attention
will be paid to the motivation expressed by the student for pursuing
their chosen career. The recipient will be notified of the award by
June 15, 2011. The recipient must complete one semester with a
GPA of 2.5 (C+) or higher and provide committee with

•TRAVELING READERS THEATER: The Our Town
Theater Group of North Creek is proud to announce the
development of a traveling Readers Theater now seeking bookings
for the winter and summer of 2011. The group is composed of
five veteran OTTG performers, all local residents, who have
rehearsed and perfected dramatic readings of several classic short
stories that are both entertaining and meaningful. The readers are
available for performances before any community group, large or
small, in almost any venue. A question and answer period about
the stories and authors may follow the readings. The
performances are given free of charge, although donations for
OTTG will be appreciated. One noteworthy feature of the
performances is that they may be tailored to various time limits.
In the basic 1 1/2 hour performance, each performer reads one
story. Groups with more time may request more stories; each
performer has prepared several stories. Another feature of the
Readers Theater is that the readings can be tailored to emphasize
particular themes. For example, a Fourth of July performance
would include stories with patriotic themes. A Halloween
performance would include ghost stories. We are always looking
for new story ideas and new readers. Interested individuals or

CHAMBER MUSIC AT THE CCC. The Courthouse Community Center in Salem will once again
come to life with the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and more. A collaborative
partnership with Daniel Shulman, an accomplished pianist and conductor educated at Juilliard,
Dartmouth and Columbia led to the first series last spring which was well received. The 2011

second floor courtroom. The courtroom has been praised for its exceptional acoustics which makes
it a natural venue for music presentations. It has been said that chamber music is like an intimate
conversation among friends. The series will be offering a talented and noteworthy group of musicians

Park Recycled Art Show is seeking artists to exhibit their work at Saratoga National Historical Park

Livestock farmers in Rensselaer County have an opportunity to apply for financial assistance
to establish or improve grazing systems on their farms. In partnership with the Hudson
Mohawk Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council, NRCS offers farmers
