Welcome to Finland

The sixth World Conference on Sustainable Building will be held in Finland from 18th
to 21st October 2011. When accepting the honour of hosting this prestigious global
summit, we recognized the challenges of continuing this successful series in a way we
respect the tradition and at the same time try to renew the concept to meet the needs
of a highly complex present reality and a somewhat unpredictable future.

What has changed since Vancouver in 1998? Among other things, the scope has
expanded over these years to include not only environmental aspects but also social
and economic sustainability. Despite of the considerable progress made, we still need
to discuss sustainable product and process development and assessment systems at
different scales, as well as their local implementation. This development needs also to
be linked to the business community so that the progress results in desired impacts.

In this edition, the global aspect will be particularly emphasized both in terms of
conference themes and conference organization. As an example, around 60 countries
are already represented within the International Scientific Committee, about three times
the number reached in previous events. And, we definitely hope to see developing
countries present at SB11.

Concerning the scientific content, there will be a clear focus on the SB themes and
a scientific stream will be provided to be published in refereed journals. It is also one
of our aims to link those participants not travelling to Helsinki with the Conference
events to allow a wider participation and to reduce our carbon footprint. Finally, in
SB11 Helsinki the number of participants will be limited to 1.000, therefore an early
registration is advised to ensure your participation.

It has been a great pleasure to participate in all the previous global SB events and in
many of their Scientific Committees. The journey has been rewarding and it continues.
So we are looking forward to collaborating with you towards our better common future
in SB11 Helsinki and beyond.

Building Conference in Helsinki is to
share leading knowledge, and also to find
new solutions which can enhance sus-
tainable ways of living and working within
built environments.

Abstract submission
Abstract submission is done via internet
only (sb11.org). It can contain 2 000
characters maximum.
Please note that the organizers reserve
the right to limit the number of papers
per presenting author. Abstracts will be
reviewed by the International Scientific
Committee.
Accepted abstracts will be asked to
be delivered as an extended abstract
and full paper. These papers will be
reviewed again by the International
Scientific Committee. Please note that
the final acceptance for oral and poster
presentations will be made based on full
paper and extended abstract.
Extended abstracts will be included in the
printed version of the proceedings and
full papers in the digital publication.
Finland
Finland is perhaps best known for its
peacefulness and beautiful nature. Vast
forests, a unique archipelago and
thousands of lakes present a striking
mixture of wooded hills and waters. In
addition to its mystical northern nature,
Finland is also a modern Nordic country
with a high standard of living and
advanced economy and technology.
Finland is famous for its "four seasons".
It's truly amazing how uniquely exotic
each season can be. Four times a year,
nature changes its uniform completely
- colour, light, temperature, sounds and
smells. Everything changes in a way that
happens nowhere else.
Helsinki
Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a
modern city with over half a million
residents and is situated on the Baltic
Sea. Finland is a safe and reliable
destination, easily accessible from all
over the world. Helsinki is unique among
Northern European cities. The lifestyle in
the second-most northern capital city in
the world is full of contrasts and activities
in the form of hundreds of events and
friendly people. Finnish design has also
made the country’s capital city world
famous. Everything is nearby – Helsinki is
a pocket-sized metropolis that is ideal for
visitors!

Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre
is a high-grade conference venue hosting
events of all sizes: meetings, galas,
congresses, exhibitions and business
events.
The Centre, only 3 km from the city
centre, is easily accessible by train,
bus or tram. Free travel card for public
transport will be provided for participants.
Helsinki Fair Centre is active in
environmental issues, and reduce their
own carbon footprint as well as that
of their customers. Their four main
environmental goals are; saving energy,
promoting public transport, appreciating
the environmental awareness of their
partners and suppliers and reducing the
waste load.
