The genesis of TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research,
consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a not for profit independent research
institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in
the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.

TERI University has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet the set
of needs for a rapidly developing India. While it draws its strength from the ethos
and traditions of India, as a global university, it reaches out in sourcing knowledge
from across the globe. Its major strength lies in the reservoir of knowledge,
experience and research experience of the parent body TERI. TERI is a unique
institution engaged not only in research that supports the objectives of sustainable
development but is also a practitioner in the field and an organization that engages
all types of stakeholders in fulfilling its mission. While TERI University is at the
start of its exciting journey, the richness of programmes that have been launched
and those that are in the making present the refreshing flavour of innovation and a
strong relevance for addressing the challenges of tomorrow.

The University aspires to contribute globally by serving as a seat of advanced


learning for the society, and to promote learning through teaching and through

On the occasion of completion of ten glorious years, the University is proud to


present an inter-college fest, Aahvaan – The awakening call on 23rd, 24th & 25th

Rules and Regulations

Nrityaradhana: The Indian Dance Events


Set the stage on fire!

“Almost nobody dances sober, unless they are insane” (HP Lovecraft)
This is what we wish to see… Do you have the dancing skills, the passion, the zeal in you to drive people
crazy? Indian Classical; Indian Folk, Western… name it, we have it…

EVENTS:
I. Indian Classical Dance (Solo)

Rules:

1. Maximum 2 entries from each college.


2. Participant should perform any one of the seven classical dances of India.
3. Time limit – 5 minutes.
4. For details, please refer to general rules for dance events.

II. Folk Dance (Group)

Rules:

1. Maximum 1 entry from each college.


2. Dance should be a folk dance from any of the states of India.
3. Bollywood songs are not allowed.
4. Each group must have minimum 4 and maximum 10 participants.
5. Time limit – 7 minutes.
6. Use of fireworks (diyas, candles etc.) will not be allowed.

Inferno – The Western Dance Event


III. Western Group Dance

Rules:

1. Maximum one entry from each college.


2. Maximum 12 member on stage and 2 back stage members.
3. Time Limit – 7 minutes.

General Rules for dance events

1. Only limited entries per event, on first come, first serve basis.
2. In case of any event having few participants, the event may stand cancelled. Pre-registration would help
us finalise on the events. Please register by 20th October, 2009.
3. There will be negative marking if the time limit is exceeded.
4. Final registrations will start at the hospitality desk one and a half hours prior to the beginning of the
event, and end half an hour prior to the event.
5. Participants should bring two copies of their soundtrack in a CD/cassette, clearly labelled with their
names and submit it at the registration desk,
6. The music should be adjusted to the correct place prior to handing over of the CD/cassette.
7. No sound system will be provided for rehearsals.
8. Details of the dance item being performed have to be given at the time of registration.
9. Registration at the hospitality desk is compulsory (even if you have pre-registered for an event, please
confirm your registration at the hospitality desk at the stated registration time). Only registered
participants will be allowed to perform.
10. A valid college ID card is necessary for registration.
11. Decision of the judges will be final.

Kamod: The Indian Music Events

There are bathroom singers… then there are singers... and then there are great singers and musicians...

If you think you have surpassed the first two categories and fall in the final one, then the stage is set for you.
Fill the atmosphere with your music and fight it out with some of the best young singers and musicians. Be it
Indian music, or Western, we have everything you need to showcase your talent, and to blow the crowds
away!

EVENTS:
I. Indian Music Solo

Rules:

1. Maximum 2 entries from each college.


2. 2 Songs to be sung per participant (hindi film songs)- one classic (song from 1960s/1970s) and one
modern (2000 onwards).
3. Total time for the two songs – 5 minutes +1 minute set up time.
4. Only sthai and one antara to be sung from both the songs.
5. Only one accompanist will be allowed (the vocalist playing an instrument included).
6. Only a Harmonium will be provided at the venue.
7. Shruti box is allowed (excluding the accompanist).

II. Indian Music Group

Rules:

1. Maximum 1 entry from each college.


2. Any song may be sung.
3. Maximum 12 members in a team including accompanist.
4. Song should preferably be a non-filmy song.
5. Time limit – 6 minutes + 2 minutes set up time.
6. Only a Harmonium will be provided at the venue.
7. Shruti box is allowed.

Crescendo: The Western Music Events


III. Western Solo

Rules:

1. Maximum 2 entries from each college.


2. One song per participant.
3. Total time – 5 minutes including set up time.
4. Only one accompanist will be allowed (the vocalist playing an instrument included).
5. All instruments to be brought by the participants.
6. For details, please refer to general rules for music events.

IV. Western Group

Rules:

1. Maximum one entry from each college.


2. One song per group.
3. Each group must have minimum 4 and maximum 8 participants, of which at least 4 must be vocalists
and there can be a maximum of 4 accompanists.
4. Time limit – 6 minutes + 2 minutes set up time.
5. All instruments to be brought by the group.

V. Instrumental Music (Solo): Indian and Western

Rules:

1. Maximum 2 entries per college.


2. Time limit – 6 minutes + 2 minutes set up time.
3. Participants should get their own instruments.

Udbodhaka: The Dramatics Events


because actions speak louder than words...

Have you ever longed to be everything at once in your life: a doctor and a waiter, a pilot and a sweeper...only
actors are capable of such versatility. If you have that passionate streak in you that can burn the stage with
expressions, speech and act, then these events are for you!

EVENTS:

I. Nukkad Natak – The Street Play


„Halla bol, halla bol
Aake vicharon ki potli khol‟

Rules:

1. Only one entry per college


2. Time Limit : 15 minutes
3. 10 to 15 members in a team.

II. Stage Play

Emblazon: The Fine Arts Events


...decorate with colours!

EVENTS:

I. Rangoli Competition
Do you know colours talk? Yes, they do! They express happiness, gloom, pride and joy. Let your
colours do the talking. Celebrate the moment with a colourful rangoli.

Rules:
1. Limited entries only, on first come, first serve basis.
2. Theme: „Save the Environment‟
3. Maximum two members per team.
4. Participants have to bring their own materials.

II. Best out of Waste
We firmly believe in the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We are, and have always been a
minimalistic waste society. Let‟s showcase the ideals of our ancestors and prove to the world that
what is waste for some can be wealth for others.

Rules:
1. Limited entries only, on first come, first serve basis.
2. Maximum two members per team.
3. Participants have to bring their own materials.
4. Only waste material, such as waste paper, waste cloth etc., should be used for making the finished
products, otherwise marks may be deducted/ entries may be disqualified.

III. Face Painting


Face is the mirror of one‟s soul. Expressions can say more than words. So use your friends face as a
canvas for your brush!

Rules:
1. Limited entries only, on first come, first serve basis.
2. Theme: „Wild Kingdom‟
3. Maximum two members per team.
4. Participants have to bring their own materials.

Reflectionz: The Media Events
Finesse your imagination!
Are you always bitten by the creativity bug in you? Think you can sell paragliding equipment to an acrophobic?
Have you always liked to click and edit? Its time to tease the creative side of your brain. Come and showcase
your photographic and advertising skills in Reflections…..

EVENTS:

I. IMPRINTS – Paint your Imagination! (Newspaper Ad - Making Competition)


Do you think you can make a product reach its customers, even from page 10 of a newspaper daily?
Then this one is for u! Simply make a newspaper advertisement for the given product in the form of a
poster. Just paint out your creativity and if the jury buys it...you get it all!

Rules:

1. No limit to the number of entries.


2. Each team will be given a product (same for all) and 30 minutes to complete the poster.
3. Posters submitted after the aforementioned time limit will not be considered for judging.
4. Maximum 3 members per team
5. Participants will be provided with chart papers for the competition. However, they are required to
bring their own colours, pencils, erasers and other necessary items.

II. ACTENDO –where actions blend with imaginations... (Ad Mad)


It‟s time to show some of your acting skills in the world of advertising. Step into the shoes of an
advertising agent and convince your customers to buy the wackiest of products with the wackiest of
commercials. Teams will be given a product for which they will have to enact a commercial.

Rules:

1. Maximum two entries per college.


2. Limited entries, on first come, first serve basis.
3. Each team will be assigned a different product, selected by a draw of lots.
4. Each team will be given 30 minutes to prepare the act.
5. Duration of the act cannot exceed 5 minutes.
6. No objectionable language/content should be used.
7. Each team will be provided with a prop, to be necessarily incorporated in the skit.

III. VISAGE - Right place Right time! (The Photography Competition)
If you think you are the Naradmuni of the present times, you are bound to win this one, because all
you need to do is to be at the right place, at the right moment!

Rules:

1. This is a photography and editing event.


2. Maximum 3 members per team.
3. Participants will be given two full days (23rd and 24th October) during the fest time to prepare for the
final presentation on 25th October.
4. The photographs clicked on these two days should be summarized in the form of a 5+1 slide
presentation (5 for photographs and 1 for collage), with no more than 1 photograph per slide.
5. The pictures clicked during the allotted time should also be used to form a creative collage, with no
restriction to the number of pictures in it.
6. The theme is “Emotions”. You may depict emotions like anxiety, hatred, fun, confidence, sympathy,
happiness, sadness, dejection, anger, frustration, surprise and exhaustion among others.
7. All photographs must be taken inside the campus, during Aahvaan'09.
8. Participants are required to bring their own cameras (digital or film). No cameras will be provided by
the organizers.
9. Participants are also required to bring their own laptops, editing tools/software and data cable.
10. Presentations would be rated according to the depiction of a mood, captions in the slides, and overall
presentation among other parameters.

S„word‟ Fighters: The Literary Events
‟coz words are mightier than swords...

Expression is as basic to humans as food, clothing or shelter... and hardly do we get such a big platform to vent
our creativity. This event lets you win your own battles with the help of the mightiest weapon on earth...
WORDS!

EVENTS:
I. GEN Y AKHTARS (The Script Writing Competition)
To be the best cook in the world, you need to get the recipe right... and to make the best serial in the
world; you need to get the script right. Entries are invited for scripts of an episode of an imaginary
serial called “It‟s My Life” featuring on a prominent channel.

Rules:

1. Word limit - 500 words.


2. Should have all elements of drama… romance, tragedy, comedy etc. Be as imaginative as you can!
3. The characters are:
A. Kaki maa: the head of the family
B. Dhruv: the eldest son and the sole bread winner
C. Shilpa: Dhruv‟s love interest
D. Vikrant: the younger son: a drug addict (his family doesn‟t know it!)

II. KAAVYA RAS (The Poetry Writing Competition)


The beauty of nature dazzles us some times, and when we sit by our window, watching the rain, over
a warm cup of coffee, the thoughts in our minds take the form of a beautiful poem. Self composed
poems on the theme of Environment or Nature are invited.

Rules:

1. The poem should have at least 4 paragraphs.


2. Language - Hindi or English.

III. PREM PATRA (The Love Letter Writing Competition)


Here is your life time opportunity to compose the ultimate prem proposal you have been dying to write!
Write the whackiest of love letters that you can think of…the only condition is, they should be
convincing enough to win you the person of your dreams and the judges.
Rules:

1. Word Limit – 200 words.


2. They will be marked on originality and innovation.

IV. SAMVAAD (The Dialogue Writing Competition)


Have you ever overheard two people talking in a crowded bus or in a park? It‟s interesting and funny
when we overhear parts of the conversation and interpret them in our own ways. Participants are
invited to write a dialogue between two people referring to the picture given below.

Rules:

1. Word limit – 250 words.


2. Genre – Humour.

General Rules for literary events:

1. The last date of submission for entries to all aforementioned events is 14th October, 2009
2. The results of the first round will be declared on 19th October, 2009 on the website and personal e-mails
will be sent to the selected participants.
3. Seven best entries in each category will be invited for the second round of the competitions to be held on
24th and 25th October, 2009.
4. The second round will comprise of on the spot competitions, details of which will be divulged there and
then.

6. Please avoid plagiarism and send your original entries. All the entries will be scanned by a plagiarism
detecting software and those entries that are caught will not be considered.

Abhivyakti: The Speaking Events
A rendezvous of oration and expression

Some of us can make the hair rise on others heads just by the art of speech. Are you one of them???

EVENTS:
I. Extempore

Rules:

1. It will consist of three rounds. Each will be an elimination round.


2. Participants will be given topics to speak on, on the spot.
3. Topics will be random and not pertaining to any particular theme.
4. Details of each round will be given at the time of registration.
5. On the spot registration. Registration will begin one and half hours prior to the event and end half an
hour prior to the beginning of the event.

II. Parliamentary Debate

TERI University will be hosting it's first Parliamentary Debate. The debate will be held in the Asian PD
format, with invitations being sent out to a select few Undergraduate and Postgraduate universities.
With this small tournament, we wish to bring to TERI a culture of debating and critical thinking as an
essential asset to a university where some of today's key debates, like environment, sustainable
development and climate change, are part of classroom discussions.

Inquisitive: The Quizzing Event


Let the quest continue...

Rules:

1. This is a general quiz, not pertaining to any one particular theme.


2. No restriction on the number of entries.
3. Each team should comprise of 3 members of the same college.
4. One elimination round of 30 minutes duration will be held. It will be on paper and will consist of
objective type questions.
5. Five teams will be selected for the final round. In case of a tie, a second elimination/ tie breaker round
may be held.
6. The final round will have different rounds such as an audio-visual round, crossword, Pictionary etc.
Details of all the rounds will be disclosed then and there.
7. On the spot registration. Registration will begin two hours prior to the event and end half an hour
prior to the beginning of the event.
8. Registration at the hospitality desk is compulsory. Only registered participants will be allowed to
participate.

minds when they starve for brilliance. So, here‟s food for your thought.

EVENTS:

I. Poster Presentation
Topic- “What should India do to move on the path of sustainable development”

Rules:

1. Abstracts are to be submitted till 29th September, 2009 (Times New Roman, 12 font, single
spacing, 250 words).
2. Ten best entries will be selected for the final presentation to be held on 23rd October, 2009.
3. The selected participants will be informed through e-mail by 5th October, 2009. Results will also
be declared on the website.
4. Further details will be sent to the selected participants through e-mail.

II. Sustainable Business Plan Competition


This business plan document should consist of three parts:

A Written Section in which you elaborate on the:


1. Business (maximum: 15 pages)
2. Entrepreneur Team (maximum: 3 pages) and
3. Quantified Sustainability Impact of your business (maximum: 5 pages). Focus has to be
given to the sustainability benefits of the project, e.g. climate change mitigation, energy
efficiency, beneficial materials (toxicity, efficiency, renewables etc.), clean-tech, water
security, species impacts, habitat preservation, etc. Contestants will have to discuss the
metrics by which the project‟s benefits are quantified, as a key part of the intellectual and
analytical process of determining what sustainability entails.
4. The Written Section of the business plan must be no longer than 20 pages (Georgia, 12
point, single spacing)

A Financial Plan in which you add the financial data (a maximum of 10 pages of tables and
assumptions. Please include only directly relevant data.)

Supplemental Data regarding the industry, competition, marketing research etc that would help
judges understand your industry and make a better judgement (maximum: 10 pages).

Rules:

1. Team should have 3-5 members.


2. The business plan must meet traditional profitability and return-on-investment standards.
3. Each business plan will be evaluated for its sustainability benefits.
4. Brevity and clarity are a must.
5. Deadline for submission of the plan is October 15, 2009, email: romita.pandita@gmail.com
6. 5 entries will be selected for the final presentation, who will be informed by 17th October, along with
further details.
7. Selected entries will be asked to present their plan on 23rd October before an elite panel of judges.
N.B.: This format is adapted from the McGinnis Venture Competition at Carnegie Mellon University,
and was used in The First Al Gore Sustainable Technology Competition, New Delhi, in February,
2008.

Chak De!!! The Sports Events


Because all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

EVENTS: Chess Tournament

Rules:
1. Both team and individual tournaments will be held simultaneously.
2. A person may either participate in the team event or in the individual event.
3. Number of players in each team – 4.
4. Game will be played on Swiss League Format.
5. Entry fee of Rs 50 for individual event and Rs 200 for the team event.
6. Although chess boards will be provided by the organisers, players are requested to bring their own chess
boards.
Indradhanush: The Variety Events
Colours of life

Variety is the spice of life. It keeps us geared up, it‟s full of surprises, and it‟s full of beauty, just like the
colours of a rainbow. These events are a perfect blend of all colours of life, singing together, seeking together
and solving together.

EVENTS:

I. Antakshari „Baithe baithe bor hue, karna hai kucch kaam


Shuru karo antakshari, lekar prabhu ka naam!‟

Rules:

1. Limited entries only, on first come, first serve basis.


2. Two members in each team.

II. Sudoku

Rules:

1. No limit on number of entries.


2. This is an individual event.
3. The competition will consist of 3-4 rounds, with eliminations being made at each stage.

III. „Digital‟ Treasure Hunt :


Does mystery intrigue you? Would you like to play Sherlock Holmes? The mystery to solve here is the
icing on the cake: it‟s a hidden treasure!!! So put on your hunting goggles and get down to work!

2. Maximum 2 members per team.

2. On-the-spot registration. Registration will begin one and a half hours prior to the event and end half an
hour prior to the beginning of the event.

4. A valid college ID card is necessary for registration.
5. Decision of the judges will be final.

 A valid college ID card is a must for participation.
 Outstation students have to send scanned copies of their ID cards by 20th October, 2009. They also have to
show a letter from the head of their institution on reaching the venue.
 In case of any event having few participants, the event may stand cancelled.
 Registration at the hospitality desk is compulsory. Only registered participants will be allowed to perform.
Even if you have pre-registered for an event, you must register again at the hospitality desk prior to the
event.
 Decision of the judges will be final and binding on all. In case of any controversy in any event, decision of
the judges would be final.

 Outstation students to report will be provided basic accommodation (dormitory style) and breakfast and
dinner from 22nd October night to 26th October 10 am. Transport fare will not be re-imbursed.
 For students coming from Delhi and NCR, transportation facilities will be available to and from the
campus from common points such as Munirka, CP etc. Detailed schedule will be intimated at a later date.

Besides the above events, we have an exciting array of fun events lined up. Don‟t miss out
