INTRODUCTION

“HEALTH IS WEALTH”

Life is gift of god. Doctors and Engineers together have developed new technology for
heath care to increase the life time and also to have a comfortable life.

In these project “BIO TELEMETRY SYSTEM” two parameters namely temperature

and glucose dripping are measured. Abnormality in any of the parameters will be informed to the
doctor through FM receiver.

Temperature is sensed by using, two terminal IC AD590 which gives current output
directly proportional to absolute temperature variations. This is amplified using instrumentation
amplifier, and read to analog and digital converter.

Glucose dripping can be sensed by using infrared proximity which is fixed at appropriate
location. Presence or absence of glucose flow is judged by intensity variation of light falling on
the sensor which is to avoid reverse flow of the blood from the body to bottle.

Above mentioned sensing circuit are connected to micro processor will continuously
receive signal from sensor circuit and further does the work of informing to the doctor.

This project can be used in big and busy hospitals, where doctor has to attend many
patients at a time. This principle can be used in ICU wards.

TEMPERATURE SENSING CIRCUIT:

DESCRIPTION:

The two terminals IC AD590, used for temperature sensing, gives current output which is
directly proportional to absolute temperature variations, over a range of -50oC to +150oC.
The output of the AD590 varies at the rate of 1µ A/K and is inherently linear, thus
requiring no external linear circuit. Please not that zero degree centigrade is equal to 273.2 K.
The IC is pre-calibrated to give an output of 298.3µA at 298.2 K (25 oC) but external calibration
can also be performed.
Thus the temperature sensor works over a wide range of voltages, starting from +4v to
+40v, which adds to the versatility of its application in various temperature sensing circuits. The
current output of the transducer needs to be converted to suitable proportional voltage level.
This is achieved by utilizing the resistor as shown in circuit, connecting a grounded 1K
resistor in series with AD590 will result in 1mV/K drop across the resistor. A preset of 1k
resistor has been used in series with 680 ohm resistor to facilitate the calibration of the sensor.

GLUCOSE DRIPPING CIRCUIT:

DESCRIPTION:

This circuit detects the presence or absence of glucose in a bottle. Here infrared
proximity used for the above said purpose. The sensor can be fixed at the glucose pipe to indicate
the flow of glucose.
When there is glucose in the bottle, the intensity of light from the source falling on the
photo transistor is low. When bottle is empty intensity of light falling on the photo transistor is
high. Hence the output is high which given to AND gate and then the output of AND gate is
given to the microprocessor.

VOICE BANK:

DESCRIPTION:

The APR9600 device offers true single-chip voice recording, non-volatile storage, and
playback capability for 40 to 60 seconds. The device supports both random and sequential access
of multiple messages.

RANDOM ACCESS MODE:

Random access mode supports 2, 4, or 8 messages segments of fixed duration. As

suggested recording or playback can be made randomly in any of the selected messages. The
length of each message segment is the total recording length available (as defined by the selected
sampling rate) divided by the total number of segments enabled (as decoded in Table1). Random
access mode provides easy indexing to message segments.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF RECORDING IN RANDOM ACCESS MODE:

On power up, the device is ready to record or play back, in any of the enabled message
segments. To record, /CE must be set low to enable the device and /RE must be set low to enable
recording. You initiate recording by applying a low level on the message trigger pin that
represents the message segment you intend to use. The message trigger pins are labeled
/M1_Message - /M8_Option on pins 1-9 (excluding pin 7) for message segments 1-8
respectively. Note: Message trigger pins /M1_Message, /M2_Next, /M7_END, and /M8_Option,
have expanded names to represent the different functionality that these pins assume in the other
modes. In random access mode these pins should be considered purely message trigger pins with
the same functionality as /M3, /M4, /M5, and /M6. For a more thorough explanation of the
functionality of device pins in different modes please refer to the pin description table that
appears later in this document. When actual recording begins the device responds with a single
beep (if the BE pin is high to enable the beep tone) at the speaker outputs to indicate that it has
started recording. Recording continues as long as the message pin stays low.
The rising edge of the same message trigger pin during record stops the recording
operation (indicated with a single beep). If the message trigger pin is held low beyond the end of
the maximum allocated duration, recording stops automatically (indicated with two beeps),
regardless of the state of the message trigger pin. The chip then enters low-power mode until the
message trigger pin returns high. After the message trigger pin returns to high, the chip enters

standby mode. Any subsequent high to low transition on the same message trigger pin will
initiate recording from the beginning of the same message segment. The entire previous message
is then overwritten by the new message, regardless of the duration of the new message.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF PLAYBACK IN RANDOM ACCESS MODE:

On power up, the device is ready to record or playback, in any of the enabled message
segments. To playback, /CE must be set low to enable the device and /RE must be set high to
disable recording & enable playback. You initiate playback by applying a high to low edge on
the message trigger pin that representing the message segment you intend to playback. Playback
will continue until the end of the message is reached. If a high to low edge occurs on the same
message trigger pin during playback, playback of the current message stops immediately. If a
different message trigger pin pulses during playback, playback of the current message stops
immediately (indicated by one beep) and playback of the new message segment begins. A delay
equal to 8,400 cycles of the sample clock will be encountered before the device starts playing the
new message. If a message trigger pin is held low, the selected message is played back
repeatedly as long as the trigger pin stays low. A period of silence, of duration equal to 8,400
cycles of the sampling clock, will be inserted during looping as an indicator to the user of the
transition between the end and the beginning of the message.

FM TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER:

DESCRIPTION:

This FM transmitter is easy to construct and it's transmissions can be picked up on any
standard FM radio. It has a range of up to 1/4-mile (400 meters) or more, depending on the line-
of-sight, obstructions by large buildings, etc. It is great for room monitoring, baby listening,
nature research, etc. L1 is 8 to 10 turns of 22 gauge hookup wire close wound around a non-
conductive 1/4-inch diameter form, such as a pencil. C4 is a small, screw-adjustable, trimmer
capacitor.

Set your FM radio for a clear, black space in the lower end of the band (88MHz). Then,
with a non-metallic/non-conductive trimmer tool, adjust this capacitor for the clearest reception.
A little experimenting and patience may be in order. Most of the parts values are not critical, so
you can try adjusting them to see what happens. If you decide to substitute transistors with
something similar you already have, it may be necessary adjust the collector voltage of Q1 by
changing the value of R2 or R3 (because you change transistors, it changes this bias on the base
of Q1).

It should be about 1/2 the supply voltage (about 4 or 5v). Use any capacitor you have
laying around, but no electrolytic or tantalum caps. Only if you intend to use this circuit outside
the home you may want to select more temperature stable capacitors.

INTEL 8085:

The INTEL Microprocessor 8085 is an 8bit Microprocessor and it’s

consisting of the following parts.
CONTROL UNIT:

Generates signals within Microprocessor to carry out the instruction, which has been
decoded. In reality causes certain connections between blocks of the uP to be opened or closed,
so that data goes where it is required, and so that ALU operations occur.

ARITHMETIC LOGIC UNIT:

The ALU performs the actual numerical and logic operation such as ‘add’, ‘subtract’,’
AND’, ‘OR’, etc. Uses data from memory and from Accumulator to perform arithmetic. Always
stores result of operation in Accumulator.

REGISTERS:

The 8085/8080A-programming model includes six registers, one accumulator, and one
flag register, as shown in Figure. In addition, it has two 16-bit registers: the stack pointer and the
program counter. They are described briefly as follows. The 8085/8080A has six general-purpose
registers to store 8-bit data; these are identified as B, C, D, E, H, and L as shown in the figure.
They can be combined as register pairs - BC, DE, and HL - to perform some 16-bit operations.
The programmer can use these registers to store or copy data into the registers by using data
copy instructions.

ACCUMULATOR:

The accumulator is an 8-bit register that is a part of arithmetic/logic unit (ALU). This
register is used to store 8-bit data and to perform arithmetic and logical operations.
The result of an operation is stored in the accumulator. The accumulator is also identified as
register A.

FLAGS:

The ALU includes five flip-flops, which are set or reset after an operation according to
data conditions of the result in the accumulator and other registers. They are called Zero (Z),
Carry (CY), Sign (S), Parity (P), and Auxiliary Carry (AC) flags; they are listed in the Table and
their bit positions in the flag register are shown in the Figure below. The most commonly used
flags are Zero, Carry, and Sign. The microprocessor uses these flags to test data conditions.

Final Year Project's is One place for all Engineering Projects, Presentation, seminar, summer
training report and lot more.
NOTE:-This work is copyright (©) to its Authors. This is only for Educational Purpose.

For example, after an addition of two numbers, if the sum in the accumulator id larger
than eight bits, the flip-flop uses to indicate a carry -- called the Carry flag (CY) – is set to one.
When an arithmetic operation results in zero, the flip-flop called the Zero (Z) flag is set to one.
The first Figure shows an 8-bit register, called the flag register, adjacent to the accumulator.
However, it is not used as a register; five bit positions out of eight are used to store the outputs of
the five flip-flops.
The flags are stored in the 8-bit register so that the programmer can examine these flags
(data conditions) by accessing the register through an instruction. These flags have critical
importance in the decision-making process of the microprocessor. The conditions (set or reset) of
the flags are tested through the software instructions. For example, the instruction JC (Jump on
Carry) is implemented to change the sequence of a program when CY flag is set. The thorough
understanding
of flag is essential in writing assembly language programs.

PROGRAM COUNTER (PC):

This 16-bit register deals with sequencing the execution of instructions. This register is a
memory pointer. Memory locations have 16-bit addresses, and that is why this is a 16-bit
register. The microprocessor uses this register to sequence the execution of the instructions. The
function of the program counter is to point to the memory address from which the next byte is to
be fetched. When a byte (machine code) is being fetched, the program counter is incremented by
one to point to the next memory location.
STACK POINTER (SP):

The stack pointer is also a 16-bit register used as a memory pointer. It points to a memory
location in R/W memory, called the stack. The beginning of the stack is
Defined by loading 16-bit address in the stack pointer. The stack concept is explained
in the chapter "Stack and Subroutines."

INSTRUCTION REGISTER/DECODER:

Temporary store for the current instruction of a program. Latest instruction sent here
from memory prior to execution. Decoder then takes instruction and ‘decodes’ or
Interprets the instruction. Decoded instruction then passed to next stage.

MEMORY ADDRESS REGISTER:

Holds address, received from PC, of next program instruction. Feeds the address bus with
addresses of location of the program under execution. Control Generator Generates signals
within uP to carry out the instruction which has been decoded. In reality causes certain
connections between blocks of the uP to be opened or closed, so that data goes where it is
required, and so that ALU operations occur.

GENERAL PURPOSE REGISTERS:

Microprocessor requires extra registers for versatility. Can be used to store additional
data during a program. More complex processors may have a variety of differently named
registers.

REGULATOR IC:

DESCRIPTION:

The output of the rectifier is not regulated. To regulate the DC voltage, this IC is used. It
must be regulated at a constant level. The input of this IC is unregulated. The output of this IC is
regulated. In this IC number first two digit represent the output voltage is whether positive or
negative and the second two digit represents how many voltage is obtained in output.

PCB DESIGN:

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

 Copper sheet
 Ferric Chloride
 Permanent marker
 Thermocol base

PCB Making:

First draw the complete layout of the circuit diagram on the graph sheet. The thermocol
base is used to hold the components temporarily care should be taken regarding the location
shape and size of the components. The ground line is kept on one side and the supply line is kept
on other side as far as possible.
To draw the circuit on the copper sheet fixes the graph sheet and drill on the wanted
places on the PCB. After that clean the copper sheet and draw the lines on it with marker pen as
drawn on the graph sheet. Check lines clearly.
For etching the PCB, takes fresh water in a flat tray and mix a small amount of ferric
chloride to it. Immense the PCB and shake for few minutes.
Observe the changing colour of the copper sheet from the solution. If only in the copper
naked position are corroded. Now wash the PCB in water and rub the PCB with neat clothes.
Then fix the components on the PCB and solder them properly. Use the jumper wires for the
connections where ever required.

POWER SUPPLY:

DESCRIPTION:

Here we are using two separate power supply unit. The +9v power supply is used for FM
transmitter and the other power supply unit is used for other circuits used in this project.

Transformer:

It has two windings; they are primary and secondary windings. The step down
transformer is used. The 230v, 50Hz AC supply is applied to the primary winding. At secondary
winding +18v AC voltage is obtained. This output voltage is applied to the bridge wave rectifier.

Bridge wave rectifier:

Here four diodes are used. The output of secondary of the transformer is applied to the
bridge rectifier circuit. The rectifier output is pulsating DC. It’s not pure DC some AC ripples are
present in DC. So we must reduce the AC ripples by using capacitors. Capacitor is used to
bypass AC ripples to ground.

Regulator IC:

The output of the rectifier is not regulated. It must be regulated at a constant level. So we
use regulator IC named as 7812, 7912, 7805 and 7909. The input of this IC is unregulated. Here
+12V, -12V, +5V and -9V are obtained in output of regulated IC.

APPLICATION:

 This project is particularly for patient in ICU ward but can be extended to general wards
also by using advance sensing devices.

 If the patient temperature is rising, who is in home? It can be said automatically to the
doctor through transmitter.

 As same as body temperature, if there is no glucose then it can be said automatically to

the doctor which avoids the reverse flow of the blood from the body to bottle.

 This project can be used in big and busy hospitals, where the doctor has to attend many
patients at a time.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT:

 This project can be expanded by adding some more parameters like blood pressure,
fracture, density of hemoglobin, presence of tumors in body, etc.,

 Telecommunication can be done with latest technology like WAP etc., It is not
needed that the patient should be lying in the hospital for monitoring his body
condition. By using Bio-Telemetry, the sensors are fixed in the body at proper
location.

 These sensors continuously transfer the bio-electrical signal to the hospital

continuously where the status of the patient is analyzed. When the doctor finds any
disorder in the received signal, the patient is called to hospital and proper treatment is
given.

 In future this technique can be extended to proof its excellence in the history of Bio-
Medical field.

CONCLUSION:

This project work has been completed successfully. The selection of various sensors and
measuring circuits were done genuinely on the experimental basis. During the fabrication of the
circuit proper care was taken and the PCB’s were prepared with utmost care. With the help of
microprocessor the various measure parameters were monitored.
In case any abnormality; doctors were informed through mobile or by FM receiver about
the patient condition at the right time. In this project, the value of temperature and presence or
absence of glucose in bottle is sensed.
