Nowadays, the development of society has been rapidly professional along with the

dramatic development of technology. Following the development of society, this is a

higher change in associates, institutes and especially workplace or companies. The
organization of workplace or companies have to adapt social change and increasing
competition among companies in the market, in particularly global market. Therefore, a
large number of companies have been seeking approaches of organized workers or
employees to how can achieve more efficient and effective goals for companies.
However, there are many debates between the role of individual work or team in
companies, which is more significant and efficient and effective for companies than each
other. This essay will examine the benefit and disadvantage of individual and teamwork.
Further, this emphasizes that the trend of team work has been the significant trend of
companies’ organization.

First of all, there are many lectures or researches revealed the benefits of individual
working, for example independent, managing the time and flexible as compared to team
work. The author (Digman, 1990) highlights that people are affected their personality
following five-factor model consisting of conscientiousness, emotional stability,
openness to experience, agreeableness and extroversion. Therefore, people will work to
achieve their purposes, which are exposed in hierarchy of need (Abraham Maslow,
1970), for example safety, ego and self- actualization. As a result, people individual
behavior is affected by MARS model (M.A. Griffin, A. Neal and S.K. Parker, 2007)
including motivation, ability, role perceptions and situational factors. One benefit of
working alone is independent due to demonstrating ability. When people work alone,
they have to solve their work by themselves and cannot rely on other people. Therefore,
the process gives them not only experience but also their confidence to create their
decision in the future. Moreover, individual work gives some people managing time
ability. They can work in a flexible time by themselves, which is best for them, and they
do not have to depend on others for having an arrangement. Therefore, it will save their
time. In addition, working individual can prove their ability or self-actualization among
colleagues when employees accomplish their work by themselves or their ability. This is
a significant factor of individual behavior that motivates people to attempt their higher
aims or position in companies. Hence, working individual have not only several benefits
for employees but also for company aims or productivity.
Although, working individual has some benefits, it has many disadvantages for self
employees, and especially company goals, such as limited quantity of work, over
pressure, stress and lack of cooperation. A significant drawback of working individual is
less idea that are created by the unique person as compared to working group having a
variety of ideas. Therefore, the result of individual work is limited scale and intension of
work. In addition, a person is easily overwhelmed work when there are a lot of works
coming constant toward them. Individual workers are easily overworked and are more
stressful, to some extent beyond their responsibility, even though they could implement
many tasks. Another disadvantage of working alone is isolation. The study of Gifford, R.
& Sacilotto, P.A (1993) indicates that there is relevant between isolation and individual
working in a long time due to lack of interpersonal activities. The research of Brummett
et al. shows that the impacts of isolation are stressful or anxiety arousing, physiological
arousal and mental health, which could produce serious mortality. In addition, the review
of Cacioppo, J. T and Hawkley, L. C. (2009) notes that isolation can promote obesity
and reduce lifespan. Furthermore, because of implementing lots of work by themselves,
this is not only overwork but also responsibility for what they do, rather than team work’s
responsibility sharing with other members.
Hence, there are a large number of negative impacts of individual working on
employees as compared to few benefits of. And in addition, if employees decrease their
productivity for companies by overwork, isolated problem and mental health, company’s
benefits or productivity will be reduced and less competition with other competitors.
However, the trend of working groups is more popular due to company success or
benefits that are most important for existence and development of companies. As a
consequence, portions of companies currently invest huge money for researches and
development of efficiently and effectively organizational teamwork.
Thus, teamwork has much advantage for organization, for example more creativity,
satisfaction and speed. The numerous benefits of working group have contributed to
productivity and development of companies, and increased successes for these
companies. The significant advantage of working team is job satisfaction that is one of
key things emphasized in surveys of employees. This enthusiasm, which is created
through interaction among members of groups, will increase productivity of employees.
The research of Bhatti, K.K. & Shahzad, I.A (2008) indicates that the satisfaction will not
only increase productivity, but also improve performance and reducing turnover intention
of employees. As a consequence, the productivity of organization or companies will
increase too. In other words, this leads increase of profits. Secondly, working group
means to be more creativity, because a team work will have more ideas as compared to
a person. Every member of the group has different skills, perception and personality.
Using those diverse traits in a group will produce more ideas as creative solution for
various objectives of work or companies. And then, this leads to better results for
companies. In addition, teamwork has a variety of skills as compared to individual,
despite a best qualified individual. Some people excel in imagining ideas, others could
be better implementing workers through plans. The important point is that a group
working together will create a vast variety of skills that are available use to overcome a
huge work and to achieve extraordinary results. Furthermore, working group will have
higher performance than individual. The researches of Shaw, J.B. and Power, E.B
(1998) and Guzzo, R. and Dickson, M. W (1996) indicate that working groups can
quickly implement a lot of plans in the same time, because they can move toward in
parallel and divine parts of the plan for each member. As a result, the final goal will
achieve quicker. One other benefit of working group is support among members. The
support among members can increase friendship and cooperation of groups. This leads
working groups to be more efficient and effective, so organization cannot underestimate
the importance of support as well as encouragement of the group.
Although, working group has enormous benefits, it also has some disadvantages in
related to time consuming, many ideas, less participation of some members and distinct
culture. Firstly, in the creating of groups and members, it could spend lots of the time as
consume time. The time is not only spent to creating groups, but also established
friendship among members of a group. As a result, few objectives may be delayed to the
implementation. Secondly, disadvantage of working group could be wrong implementing
objectives due to too many ideas, which leads dilute consistency of the plans as
inefficient plans. Furthermore, it can increase disagreement of members due to different
perspectives and opinion. Most members have their own ideas, and they not only want
to impress their own thoughts, but also to be heard. As a result, this is loss of
coordination among members (Vermeulen, P. and Benders, J., 2003). Finally, another
drawback of working team is cultural factors, such as individualism and collectivism. The
research of Jiang, X. (2010) notes that the distinct culture leads influences on member’s
behavior for groups. For example, Chinese employees believe cooperation and harmony
that are fundamental success as compared to highly individualistic America. Thus,
Chinese employees prefer teamwork more to American (Jin, 1993).
There are vast advantages of teamwork as compared to individual, although there
are a few of drawback of teamwork. In addition, the trend of society is interaction, so
people cannot work alone without communication as connecting with others. Therefore,
employees have to work together to achieve the company or organization goal as their
goal. Moreover, people can not only work individual for their jobs, but they can also be a
part of groups to do bigger goals or company’s objectives in order to company success
as their success. There are many ways to limit the drawback of teamwork and to
improve team performance, such as having a clear purpose, using team members
consistent with aim of group and listening another members. Firstly, groups should to
know what is expected for, which goal they try to attain. After defining their objectives,
they can restrict focus on their objectives and limit various ideals that may be partially
wrong. As a result, they can implement plans and avoid doing wrong objectives.
Secondly, establishing up the team, companies or organizations have to use team
member appropriately. There are many different people in groups, so the organizations
have to define the personality of people who are introversion or extraversion. In addition,
they need to adjust members among groups in order to equitable allocation among
members. As a consequence, it will not only increase their performance, but also avoid
relying on other members in groups. Finally, people like sharing their ideas, achievement
and understanding on issues. The problem is that people sometimes like impressing
their own ideas and less attention on others. Therefore people in a group need to listen
other ideas consistent with their sharing ideas, in order to improve their group
performance. In addition, it not only helps to form solution, but is also a significant factor
to handle contradiction in groups.
Such analyses are significant for further research; Although, there is few
disadvantage of teamwork, there are much more benefits and potential abilities of team.
Furthermore, the trend of society is interdependence, interaction among people. In
workplace or companies, people are not only individual work to achieve their purposes,
such as status, esteem and self-actualization, but also attain their company goals as a
part of the organization. In fact, personal purposes support the group purposes to some
extent, rather than against. Therefore, the trend of teamwork is the trend of organized
companies at presently. This will help a company to achieve a higher goal and to
increase productivity as compared with competitors
