INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY
THE STORY SO FAR
It all started with 5 breweries in South India, the oldest of which, Castle Breweries,
dated back to 1857. In 1915, these 5 small breweries decided to join forces to
become United Breweries. And, soon afterwards, the people of South India were
astonished by the sight of bullock carts carrying huge barrels or ‘hogsheads’
containing beer. These carts trundled their way to customers, including British
troops, living in and around Chennai, Bangaluru and the Nilgiris.
Soon, the brew from United Breweries became a favorite, especially among the
British troops, for it was as good if not better than any beer they had ever tasted. So
began the history of United Breweries in India.
In 1944, United Breweries were the first to launch beer in bottles under the brand
name UB Export. Then, in the 80s, we became the first to launch canned beer and
draught beer.
The company was bought over by late Mr. Vittal Mallya in 1947, and since then
has never looked back. Today each one of the 32,000 Beer outlets in India sells one
brand or the other from United Breweries.
Quality and hygiene have always been the key elements of the United Breweries'
manufacturing philosophy. To this end, the Central Scientific Laboratory (CSL),
headquartered at Bangalore sets standards for all its breweries. Quality
Management Systems laid out along the lines of ISO 9000 are strictly adhered to,
controlling quality at every stage of production, from raw materials to the end
product. Also, besides controlling the production process, the CSL analyses the
Company's beer present in shelves all over the country, the competition's beers and
beers from across the world. These beers are tested as per the standards laid down
by the European Brewery Convention on 40 different parameters. By these
standards, United Breweries' beers don't just equal, but even surpass, several Dutch
QUALITY CHECK
In addition to the testing performed by the supplier, source water quality is
monitored annually against all United States Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) quality standards and some parameters included.
QUALITY CHECK
Each step of state of art multiple barrier water treatment system is either
monitored automatically or manually with the same rigor and frequency
dedicated to other beverages.
INTERIM PROCESSING-
Depending upon the initial treatment, water is either temporarily
Stored or passed through granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration, which
absorbs impurities and removes undesirable odors, tastes and any residual
chlorine.
QUALITY CHECK
The water is monitored to ensure there is no residual chlorine.
WATER PURIFICATION-
They uses reverse osmosis (RO) technology to purify water intended .RO
removes impurities from water by moving water at high pressure through a
molecular-level filtration process.
Once the RO process is completed, the purified water is treated by
ultraviolet light disinfection as an additional safety measure.
QUALITY CHECK
The reverse osmosis system is continually monitored to ensure both the
quality of water as well as performance of the reverse osmosis system. The
water is monitored to ensure that it meets the stringent FDA definition for
purified water.
MINERALIZATION OF WATER-
At this point, the right amounts of key minerals-magnesium sulfate,
potassium chloride, and salt-are added to provide with its pure, fresh taste.
QUALITY CHECK
Ingredients used in mineralization process are sampled at defined intervals
to ensure conformity to company’s quality specifications.
QUALITY CHECK
Following sampling takes place following the ozonation process to ensure
the quality and safety of the water, including ensuring that appropriate
amounts of minerals were added back into the water for optimum taste.
QUALITY CHECK
Final bottled water samples are taken regularly after filling and packaging,
and before distribution, to ensure that a consistent quality product and
package is delivered to our consumer’s every time.
QUALITY CHECK
A comprehensive off the shelf trade sample and analysis program ensures
that the consumer enjoys a high quality product, no matter when it is
purchased during the bottles’ shelf life. Analysis conducted includes
assessing taste, product age, and water quality attributes.
KEY LEARNINGS FROM THE VISIT
It is one of the most valuable visits. During the visit in the company they taste us
their product. And then they take to many departments and give a live
manufacturing of the product. Found out the problems that the dealer were facing
while selling the product.
We have seen that how the water is get purified and how their bottles are made
which are free from the contamination of dust, virus, impurities etc. How a small
tube is being on a high pressure of air and then the size of the tube is being
increased and is being taken a shape of 1 ltr.or 2ltr. accordingly. And in these
empty bottles
Water is being filled and is manufactured on a larger scale. And when all filling
process takes place then packaging is being focused. All bottles are then distributed
to many retailers, whole sellers, and suppliers. And there is smooth functioning and
good coordination among all the departments.
It gives a live experience to all the happening and gives a demo to the outside
manufacturing world. Found out the customer response for products by asking.
Immense learning experience. Basic understanding of manufacturing sector.
