San Diego native Lee was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps running the family
clothing store. But after stints in a local rock band and at the local community college, he
was spotted by Frank Burns, the legendary manager of a local comedy club, and the rest is
history. Lee rapidly became an in-demand, stand-up comic with his unique Korean-American
perspective, and charismatic on-stage personality.
In 1995, comedian Pauly Shore spotted Lee on stage and asked him to open his act in Las
Vegas. Lee subsequently met Shore’s mother, Mitzi, and became a regular of her comedy
club, later hitting the road with comic Carlos Mencia.
Lee joined MADtv in 1999 and become a fan-favorite, known for his unique brand of
pain-inducing, physical humor. Creating such memorable original characters as the
comically confused film critic “Johnny Gan,” the world’s worst interpreter “Bae Sung”
and hapless warrior, the “Blind Kung Fu Master,” audiences also loved his takes on such
real-world figures as Connie Chung and North Korean President Kim Jong Il.
Lee’s film credits include Hard Breakers, Kickin’ It Old Skool, Killer Pad and Harold &
Kumar Go to White Castle. On television, Lee has appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm and
Mind of Mencia and has performed stand-up on Late Friday, Premium Blend and The
Tonight Show With Jay Leno. He was also the host of this year’s Asian Excellence Awards.
