Supplemental Reading

Differentiated Learning Assignments

1. Choose one of the following for your supplemental reading assignment.


2. Confirm the due date on your calendar or turnitin.com.
3. Complete the assignment following the directions.
4. When you submit the assignment to turnitin.com head it with the title of the
assignment you selected.

Assignment Option A – Traditional

For each 50 pages, do the following:


Summarize
Identify one sentence pattern
List and define unknown vocabulary; if there is none, acknowledge that.
List and identify a rhetorical device
List and identify a literary technique
For all 250 pages, do the following:
Identify and explain the rhetorical mode.

Assignment B – Character Study

For the entire 250 pages, do the following:


Select two characters
Give three examples of how the author describes and develops each character
Include textual support
Include and identify rhetorical devices and literary techniques

Assignment C – Elements of Fiction

For the entire 250 pages, analyze the following, including rhetorical information for
support:
Plot
What is the main conflict?
What are the minor conflicts?
How are all the conflicts related?
What causes the conflicts?
Narrative Structure
How does the story move – spatially, chronologically, etc
Point of View
Who tells the story?
Is he/she credible? Provide proof.
Why has the author chosen this point of view?
Characterization
How are the characters portrayed?
Are they flat, round, dynamic, static?
Doe they change? How and why?
Setting
When and where does the action take place?
What relationship does the setting have to the characters, plot, theme, and
narrative structure?

Assignment D – Response Writing

For all 250 pages, do the following:


Record the various emotional responses you had to the text as you read it.
Discuss that response, including textual support and rhetorical information
(identification, examples and explanations) that elicited that response.

Assignment E – Evaluative Response

For all 250 pages, do the following:


Think about the reading in light of your own experiences, values, or knowledge to decide
whether you agree with the author’s ideas or point of view.
Respond to the story, including textual support and rhetorical information, to consider the
reading’s bearing on your own life and its broader implications.

Assignment F – Shared Reading Journal

For all 250 pages, do the following:


Find a classmate who will read the same text as you.
Text, email or write notes to one another three times.
Date each writing.
The first writing includes your initial comments about the reading, such as opinions about
the content and characters, comment on your partner’s reaction, or a clarification of the
summary and rhetorical information – identification, examples and explanation.
The second writing, summarize the reading assignment.
The third writing, your reaction about the entire assignment, including what affected you
most and the text’s relevance to you.
Each of you will submit all correspondence to turnitin.com
