United Nations-
Meetings at Bretton Woods in 1943 and at Dumbarton Oaks in 1944 laid the
basis for a worldwide organization dedicated to finding peaceful solutions to
international problems. On April 25, 1945, delegates from 50 nations met in
San Francisco to draw up a charter for a new organization, The United
Nations, to replace the League of Nations.
The main points were:
Member nations would not help an aggressor nation.
Member nations would settle disputes peacefully.
Member nations would use neither force nor the threat of force to settle
disputes.
Member nations would use the armed might of an international police force
to fight against aggressors.
It created the following Assemblies:
General Assembly: Composed of delegates from each member nation, it
discusses and recommends solutions to international problems, but must
refer all solutions regarding the use of force to the Security Council. Each
nation has one vote.
Security Council: Consists of 15 members, five permanent members, “The Big
Five”, and ten nonpermanent members elected for a two-year term by the
General Assembly. Decisions may be passed by the vote of nine members, but
must include all of the Big Five.
The Economic and Social Council: Studies and makes suggestions for
economic and social betterment of countries.
The Secretariat: The UN’s administrative arm, headed by the Secretary
General, who is elected by the general assembly. Its task is to carry out those
policies adopted by the Assembly and Council. It oversees peace keeping
forces.
