INTRODUCTION
“Practice makes a man perfect
So theory is
Useless without practice”
Field work is nothing but the application part of social work. It is an
integral part of social work training and it occupies a significant place in
the curriculum for social work education in the institute. In order to be
an effective social work practitioner, it is not enough to learn theory, but
also it is essential to gain experience by putting the knowledge in to
practice.
HOUSING PATTERN
Most of the people in shantipally have thatched houses. Only one or two
pucca houses are there. The housing pattern is not improved. Most of
the houses look like small huts.
EDUCATIONAL PROFILE
In Shantipally most of the people are educated. They are aware from a
survey it is found that there are three schools in the slum.
The major problem is that most of the children are dropouts in early
age...
OCCUPATION
Most of the people in shantipally are wage labors .some of them is also
engaged in works such as:
Auto drivers
Barbers
Shop keepers
Businessmen(street vendors)
Peons etc.
Factory labours
The dwellers of shantipally are neither very poor nor very rich. Maximum
people in shantipally belong to average income group. But some of them
are not able to maintain their livelihood. Even they don’t get two full
meals in a day.
The slum dwellers are politically not aware. Most of them do not know to
whom they are voting. Most of them do not caste their votes.

The slum is full of internal & external resources. The resources are;-

HEALTH STATUS
The health status of the slum dwellers of shantipally is not good. Most of
the people are suffering from various diseases. Basically the children are
suffering from malnutrition and skin diseases. There are no near by
hospital for the treatment of the people…
BMC is providing water facility to the slum. Tube well also there in the
slum. But in spite of all there, the slum dwellers do not get safe drinking
water and suffering from water borne diseases. Lack of bathrooms and
latrines also lead to bad sanitation.
MAJOR PROBLEMS
Poverty
Illiteracy
Unemployment
Alcoholism
Poor sanitation
Lack of safe drinking water
Lack of awareness about health
No proper drainage system
Lack of awareness on government programmes
Absence of family planning
Absence of environmental hygiene
They do not build pucca homes because they do not have own land
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN
During the one year of field work the trainees had undertaken several
activities like;-
LEARNING AREAS
During this field work period the trainees achieved a lot of things that
has given the above points. The failure is that, the trainees can not able
to conduct plantation programme.

CONCLUSION
In course of field work session the trainees learn and enjoy a lot with the
slum dwellers of shantipally.It is in fact a memorable and remarkable
period of life. It is a period of learning and training about how to be a
part of the vulnerable group. The field work period is full of knowledge
and experiences. The trainees can use it for future references. At the
end, the trainees extend her sincere gratitude and obligation to all the
members of NIIS family.
