Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome Not only do I like the idea of four children (the Swallows) going away to camp on an island in the Lake District; not only do I like the fact that two sisters (the Amazon Pirates) meet them and they share adventures; not only do I like that they wage (and win) a war with Captain Flint (the Amazons’ uncle) – but I also love the illustrations, description, chapter length, and the fact that the chapters are marked with Roman numerals. Swallows and Amazons is my favourite book because you get excited along with the characters. When the Swallows pulled off their plan I actually found my heart thumping against my ribcage, as if I was there in the “Amazon” too. And when they jump into a lake I felt cold because I could really picture the icy-cold water. My favourite character is Titty (giggle!) because she is brave and quite clever. When you read Swallows and Amazons, you really get lost on Wild Cat Island and their world. Swallows and Amazons for ever! Gracie Dahl, 12

Grab a tennis ball and a bat. The batsman stands with the bat in front of his legs. Everyone else stands around them in a circle. The aim is to get the batsman out by catching them out or hitting them below the knee with the ball. To start, someone bowls to the batsman, aiming for their legs. If the batsman hits it or not, wherever the ball ends up, anyone can pick it up and quickly throw it from that spot. Take it in turns to bat.
