What was the first noticeable

fact that you observed in the

health status of your community?

As you walk around and stroll by the community, you can see these things:

1. Garbage scattered anywhere, even the diapers are just around. The Barangay
was been a dump site before, but it was developed, though still, people seem not aware of proper
garbage disposal and good sanitation making them prone for infections and several diseases.

2. Domestic Animals such as Dogs are found anywhere,

these dogs usually are not guarded by the pet-owners; they might bite the little children playing around.

3. Children at ages 1-4 years old have no slippers,

this makes them predisposed to be infested by worms.

4. Children (TPR US PLS.)

Thin body structure

Protruding Belly can be observed

Runny Nose evident

Unclean- untrimmed fingernails

Skin Problems present

Is there a noticeable community

participation in your community?

How is it shown?

Community participation can be observed in the following situations:

1. Student nurses from other colleges have affiliation in the Barangay.

> The people in the community join every program and activities

2. The Barangay Health Center is open every day. The Barangay Health Worker is the
one who facilitates the center. They have their Community Health Nurse who visits twice a
week, on Wednesday and Friday basis. The Midwife also conducts prenatal check-ups.

> The BHW would make an announcement or roam around the area to call the
attention of the people for incoming activities in the center; then the people would come to the
center the following days.

> On Wednesdays, mothers bring their children for feeding program; their
children are weighed, and assessed.

>Sometimes, there are scheduled immunizations such as for Polio, Hepa, etc.
Mothers are bringing their children also for immunization.
> On Fridays, the midwife is accepting prenatal consultations; pregnant women
often would go to the center and have their health checked too.

>Once or twice a year, there is Anti-rabies vaccination; people do come with

their pets in the center.

3. Medical mission is usually done by a school of dentistry once or twice a year.

>So, people do come to avail free dental services especially children; they have
free tooth extraction and cleaning.

Do you believe you can be of HELP to

your community even while you are

still student?

Certainly, we can be change agents to a better community…Through:

1. Conducting Health Teachings in the Barangay regarding:

> Importance of Health

> Proper Garbage Disposal

> Good Sanitation

> Hygienic Practices

> Effects of Smoking and Alcoholism

2. Serving as a role model for everyone, in your own house and the community by doing so
what is taught during the health teachings. “It must start within us”

3. Organize medical/ dental missions in the community through the help of some
Medical organizations and willing health professionals.

4. Collaborate with the Barangay Officials in conducting more community health awareness
programs and activities.

> Making of a communal garden where the people can have herbal plants
recommended by DOH for simple diseases.

5. Also, it is now recommended that if you have enough space on the backyard,

COMPOSTING will be very helpful on proper segregation of biodegradables and

RECYCLING of non-biodegradables is also encouraged. “May Pera sa Basura”

Give your general observation of daily

activities in the rural health unit

The Rural Health Unit of the barangay is the Barangay Health Center. It caters people in
the community who may be sick or well; they have consultations to attend with their health
care needs and concerns.

The Barangay Health Center personnels include the BHW or

the Barangay Health Worker, Community Health Nurse and the
Midwife.

There are facilities present within the center for the consumption of the community but
is inadequate for utilization. The regular activities upon receiving the client would include,
getting the weight, height, and the vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate and
respiration)). Assessment is done upon knowing the chief complaints and may have STAT
medications given by the nurse.

Consultations are available every Wednesday and Friday, the people can have
immunization, feeding program for the children and prenatal check-ups for pregnant women.
Moreover, anti-rabies vaccination is implemented every year. Medical missions in cooperation
with private sectors such as nursing schools and medical schools are held once or twice a year.
