Assessment of Genetic Diversity of Benguet pine (Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gord.)

Seed Production Areas in the Philippines Using Microsatellite Markers

 Significance
 Man-made activities and natural calamities threatens
the genetic diversity of P. kesiya
 Seed Production Areas (SPA) were established using
seeds from unidentified sources; no assessment of
genetic diversity
 Data management on SPA’s is very poor

 Wide genetic pool is important in establishing

plantations and implementation of conservation
program
Assessment of Genetic Diversity of Benguet pine (Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gord.)
Seed Production Areas in the Philippines Using Microsatellite Markers

Objectives

 To determine the relatedness of P. kesiya in seed

production areas at Ilocos, Benguet, Nueva Ecija,
and Bukidnon using microsatellite markers.

 To measure the diversity within- and among-SPA of

P. kesiya.

Genetic diversity within SPA – 66%

Genetic diversity among SPA – 33%

In future genetic diversity study on

Benguet pine, consider collecting
more trees per site and less site
Implications for In situ Conservation

Considering the limitation in geographical

distribution of Pinus kesiya and the degree of
genetic erosion, in situ conservation is a
must.

One conservation site is within the SPA in

Benguet being a protected area
Recommendations

1. Need to assess the genetic diversity of other natural

stands of Pinus kesiya in order to determine seed
source with wider genetic base.

2. In plantation establishment, the seeds from the SPA at

Bukidnon should be mixed with seeds from Benguet
SPA to increase the genetic diversity.

3. More studies on genetic diversity assessment of

endemic, threatened and rare forest species should be
made.
