a) A car accelerates from 10 m s"1 to a velocity of 20 m s"1 in 4 s. Later it moves with a


constant velocity for 10 s and stops after 5 s.

i) Sketch a velocity - time graph for the whole journey.

iii) Find the total distance travelled.

b) Figure 4 shows a trolley of mass 2 kg is being pulled on a rough horizontal table by a


force of 2.0 N that makes this trolley moves at a constant velocity.

b) A bullet of mass 10 g is fired into a block of wood, mass 390 g which is lying on a
smooth surface. The wood and the bullet then move together at a velocity of 10 m s"1.

i) What was the velocity of the bullet before the collision?

ii) What is the total kinetic energy before and after the collision?
(4 marks)

c) An object 25 cm in front of a lens has its real image formed 20 cm at the back of the
lens

i) Is the lens convex or concave? State the reason for your answer

ii) Calculate the focal length and the magnification of this lens.

iii) the power expended in order to change the speed in a time of 3.0 s.

a) State Pascal's principle.

b) A hydraulic jack has a small cylinder that has a cross sectional area of 100 cm2 and a
big cylinder with cross sectional area of 2000 cm2. If an 80 N force is exerted on the
small cylinder, how much force is gained by the big cylinder?

c) Figure 6 shows a cubical copper block of density 8920 kg m"3. The length of each
edge is 1.50 cm. The cubical copper block is attached to a string and then totally
immersed in oil of density 820 kg m"3.

i) What is the buoyant force experienced by the block?

a) An electric heater supplies 2.5 kW of power in the form of heat to a tank of water at
15 °C.
i) How long will it take to boil the 20 kg of water in the tank? (Assume no heat
losses to surrounding)

ii) Find the total heat released when the water become a steam at 128 °C.
(4 marks)

b) What is the mass of steam that must be injected into a calorimeter initially containing
300 g of ice cube and 500 g of water at 0°C if the final temperature is to be 70°C?
Ignore the heat capacity of the calorimeter.
