Abstract

Mobile phones in general are spread everywhere and all types of people use them. The success of

each mobile phone depends on the customer’s reaction towards it.

At my study I will be discussing people’s addition towards blackberry phones in specific and

why they are so addicted to it and what effects does it has on people and society.

First, I will start by a brief introduction on the research and why I’m searching such phenomena,

including the aims and objective of the research.

Second, I will state the methodology used in the research and how did I spread my survey and to

whom and where I could find a suitable people to have my questionnaire.

Third, I will include the results and findings from my survey and how people I had asked reacted

towards blackberry and how they addicted to it.

Forth, I will have a brief discussion on my result and what did my survey indicates about people

using blackberry devices in United Arab Emirates.

Finally I will state a brief conclusion and some recommendation for more improvements.

Chapter One

a. Introduction
Nowadays blackberry is being found in most countries and used by most people, teenagers,

business men, housewives, and others. It is a phenomenon that has been spread all around the

world. Blackberry helped most people in their daily lives at work and in general to communicate

with the outer world.

Today most people are depending in blackberry in most of their daily lives actions; it has become

an obvious addiction for many professionals and non-professionals users. They are now checking

emails every second, chatting with each other all the days, texting messages all the time, and it

took all their attention and they can’t go out without having their blackberry devices with them.

b. Aims and Goals of the study


The main goal of this study is to find and state people’s attitude towards blackberry and to what

extent they are addicted to blackberry devices in United Arab Emirates society. In this study I

will find out what people think of blackberry devices.

The aims and the objectives of this study are as follows:

- Study people's opinion towards blackberry devices.

- Present suggestions and solutions for problems.

- Know people’s attitude towards blackberry devices.

- To learn people’s addiction towards blackberry devices.

- Finding the advantages and disadvantages of using blackberry devices.

- To give recommendations, suggestions and solutions.

c. Study hypothesis
My research hypothesis will be having a questionnaire and use it as a survey to distribute to

people around Abu Dhabi and know their reactions towards blackberry devices and to know why

they are addicted to it. In order to gather data to my research I will use as I said the primary data

that will be the questionnaire and in addition I will use a secondary data from articles to compare

them to my research study.

Chapter Two

a. Methodology
As any research requires a way to search and start your research to find out any required topic, at

my research it’s required a survey to know why people are addicted to blackberry and what they

think of blackberry devices. There are many different types of methodologies that can be used to

have my survey and I selected to use questionnaire as my methodology tool.

b. Tools used
The tools that are used in my research and that was needed for it are as follows:

1. Primary data: collected from people’s reactions and answers.

2. Secondary data: collected from articles, printed resources, opinions of other people.

c. Procedures
I have collected my data in Abu Dhabi University and from articles through the internet, and I

have used first the questionnaire and then I compared my results to the articles I mentioned.

d. Samples
I have selected a random sample of people in Abu Dhabi University and friends around me as I

can meet them easily and every day. I have decided to ask 35 students, 5 friends and 10 staff

from ADU to have multiple opinions from teenagers and workers. As a total I have asked a

sample of 50 people in my research.

Chapter Three

a. Results and Findings


At this part, I will be stating and having my results and findings from my survey that I have

distributed to the 50 people as they were my sample from Abu Dhabi University students, staff,

and friends. Then I will analyze each question according to my results to know about people’s

addiction towards blackberry.

Graph 2 indicates about what prices people prefer to buy a mobile device and as a result, 42%
replied that they buy mobile devices around 1000-1400 dirham, while 30% said that they buy
mobile phones with price of 1500-1900, and 26% replied that they buy it with price of 2000-
2500, also only 2% buy mobile phones with price of 500-900.

Graph 3 indicates that 96% prefer to use blackberry phones, and 2% prefer to use Nokia phones,
while none uses Sony Ericson, Samsung, or Motorola phones.

Graph 4 indicates that customers buy mobile phone according to specific function that attracts
them and some of that uses it for its shape and size that represents 46% from the sample, and 27%
uses it for its options and features, and 25% uses it for its easy handled, while only 2% uses
mobile phone for its price.

Graph 5 stated the results for blackberry users and if it attracts them and make them addicted to it,
and 46% replied that they agree that blackberry devices are stylish and attracts people easily, and
23% agreed also that it attracts them, and 17% were ok with its style, while 10% disagreed and
4% strongly disagree, that results in having around 69% agrees that blackberry devices are stylish
and attracts people while only 14% disagree and don’t buy the blackberry for its style.

Graph 6 states that 58% replied with strongly agree for the mentioned statement that blackberry
devices offer large variety of models to choose from, and 27% agreed with the mentioned
statement, and 15% were ok with blackberry of having variety of choices while none either
disagree or strongly disagree.

replied that they strongly agree with the statement and 15% agreed, and 4% were ok of
blackberry of being user friendly, while none replied that they disagree neither strongly disagree.

Graph 8 represents the statement of blackberry devices are priced very reasonably and 44%
replied that they strongly agree, and 10% replied that they also agree, and 19% were ok with

blackberry prices, while 17% disagreed with the statement and 10% strongly disagree. As an
overall 54% agree and 27% disagree of blackberry having reasonable prices.

Graph 9 represents the answers for the statement of blackberry devices have many added features
that most customers like, and 56% answered with strongly agree that it has, and 25% agreed also,
and 17% were neutral to the statement, while 2% only disagree and none of the sample asked
strongly disagree, as an overall mainly 81% agrees that blackberry have added many features that
customers like and want.

Graph 10 indicates for that blackberry devices are very durable, a 79% replied that they
disagree and 17% strongly disagree with that, and none were neutral, while 2% strongly
agree and also 2% agree.

This chart shows the age group I have asked, and mainly the age were from 21-30 as the

regular age in ADU and 60%, while I got 30% from age up to 20, and 10% where

Chart 4 shows the education level and mainly the people I asked were graduates in ADU

and were of 70%, while 20% were post graduates and doing their master, and 10% were

others those are the staff from ADU and for secondary and primary the result was 0%.

Chapter Four

a. Discussion
As a result from the survey I have distributed and the answers I got from the people I have asked

I can state that most of the people I have asked they use mobile phones and it differs from one to

one according to the price they buy it. And mostly a 48 people out of 50 uses blackberry devices

and they are attracted to it and addicted to it because of its shape, size, style, features, options,

and prices.

People tend to buy blackberry devices because they agree that it has a very stylish shape that

attracts them, and they agree that blackberry are friendly use and not hard to be learn within

time. While others agreed that blackberry devices have many models to choose from which gives

them a variety of choices. Also people replied that they agree that blackberry has the main

features that any customer need, like, and want. In addition they disagreed that blackberry

devices are very durable and they tend to broke.

As an overall people are mostly addicted to blackberry devices and they don’t go anywhere

without this smart phones as they use it in their daily lives such as business, chatting with friend,

communicating with each other, and having some fun while they are using its options and

features. Around UAE people are being addicted to it and mostly all kind of people are using it

from young people to old people.

b. Compare results with existed results

BlackBerry - A New Addiction

As stated in this article that was written by Mohammed Bhimji (2010), the addiction of

blackberry is spreading everywhere to anyone nowadays and it is becoming bad and is affecting

people so much. It is like a drug nowadays now one can move or go anywhere without having

his\her blackberry with him/her all the way as they are addicted to check emails, chat, always

stay in touch, and to use other features in it.

According to Mohammed Bhimji blackberry users can’t stay away from their phones they have

to take it everywhere with them. Also, with the extra features of the wireless internet that they

can provide 24 hours all day they are addicted to it as it provides them with multi features and

sometimes they tend to forget where they are and just keep in checking mails and

communicating with others and forget the people they are sitting with.

As stated in Mohammed Bhimji articles some people tend to sleep with their blackberry next to

them as he/she is addicted to it and because they keep in checking it all the time. Also some

addiction is good for some users like managers or executives that needs to stay in touch with

their company so instead of having their laptops with the all the time they can carry their smart

phones with them as it is small in size and can function the same way of a laptop, that it keeps

them connected to their managers and to their company.

Blackberry is continuing to spread in the market and more customers are buying it and the

blackberry outlets are gaining money and profits of such developed smart phones that it was able

to attract all types of people around the world. (By Mohammed Bhimji, 2010)

Why Is the BlackBerry So Addicting?

According to Mohammed Bhimji (Oct. 2010) article why people are addicted to blackberry, he

stated that blackberry devices are known for their shiny shape and their comfortable size also as

they have a mp3 player, games, and other internet options they can use easily through blackberry

phones.

Blackberry deices are becoming strongly known in most societies and very popular for their

friendly using and their handled options that helps any customers to function easily, and most of

blackberry users are addicted to blackberry devices because it keeps them communicating with

the outer world and for business it keeps them communicating with their company 24 hours all

the day and for teenagers they want to be able to talk to their friends all the time with a

reasonable price.

Also Mohammed Bhimji stated that blackberry is being addicted as drugs are addicted, users

tend to keep it around them all the time and they can’t go out without having it with them, as

they keep on chatting and checking emails.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Using a BlackBerry

Blackberry is like any mobile devices it has advantages and disadvantages. Here are several

advantages of blackberry phones:

1. Blackberry operating system is very functional and its one of its best features it allows

users to use multiple options from the phones.

2. Blackberry hardware and its saving files options is also one of its features that help users

to be able to save many files on it and to use videos, music, pictures, and other options

also you can use multiple email services.

3. Blackberry has a very good screen size that helps people to view and see anything on it

very clear and accurate.

Here are also several disadvantages of blackberry devices:

1. Blackberry application sometimes they get jammed with each other that can result in a

bad effect and sometime internet isn’t fast enough to use the World Wide Web. Also it

doesn’t have a build in radio tuner.

2. Blackberry tends sometimes to erase text messages to clear more space for the coming

messages or other things.

3. Blackberry has a very loud camera that is one of its bad options.

Chapter Five

a. Conclusion

In a conclusion I can state that most of people with all kinds of ages use blackberry devices

either for fun or for business and it differ from one to another.

I had clarified my case study with my survey results and got a clear idea about why people are

addicted to blackberry devices and I supported my survey with an existed articles from different

resources and my sample was a 50 people from Abu Dhabi university students and staff

including also my friends because I can easily get them and ask them to such a topic.

Finally, I have put some recommendation to my research on how to increase availability or

blackberry without being addicted to it.

b. Recommendations

These are some recommendations for more improvements to blackberry devices:

1. Try to find out more about people’s reaction towards blackberry devices.

2. Perform honesty while advertising for blackberry and always state its true functions.

3. Always have a survey to know people’s attitude towards blackberry devices.

4. Be aware of misuse of blackberry devices among people.

5. Insure to have limitation of options of blackberry.
