Q:WHAT IS INTER-VLANS ROUTING?

Definition for vlan:

A virtual LAN, commonly known as a VLAN, is a group of hosts with a common set
of requirements that communicate as if they were attached to the same broadcast
domain.

When do I need a VLAN?

You need to consider using VLAN’s in any of the following situations:

• When You have more than 200 devices on your LAN

• When You have a lot of broadcast traffic on your LAN
• Groups of users need more security or network will slowed down by
too many broadcasts?

Inter-Vlan Routing
Network devices in different VLANs cannot communicate with one
another without a router to route traffic between the VLANs. In most
network environments, VLANs are associated with individual networks
or subnetworks.

shows a basic interVLAN routing topology. Switch A is in

VLAN 10 and Switch B is in VLAN 20. The router has an
interface in each VLAN.

IF host A want to communicate with host C.host A Send an Arp request(Address

Resolution Protocol)frame with host c destination ip and a broadcast Mac
Address. The switch Forward this Broad Cast to all ports in vlan 10 and to router.
The router, recognizing that it can reach host D’s network, will send an ARP
response frame with its own MAC address as the destination MAC address
host A should use.

What is a trunk port?

When there is a link between two switches or a router and a switch that carries the
traffic of more than one VLAN, that port is a trunk port.

A trunk port used a special trunking protocol. That Is Isl Inter Switch Linked would
be Cisco’s proprietary or the IEEE standard 802.1q.
Vtp Modes :
Following re the modes of Vtp

1.Server Mode

In this Mode You can Create modify delete Vlans.A vtp Server switch advertise vlan
configuration to other switches and synchronize vlan configuration based on received
message over trunk port.

2.Client Mode:

The only thing which you cannot do in this mode you cannot delete modify or create
vans,as where its work same like vtp server do.its advertise vlan configuration to other
switch and synchronize vlan configuration based on received message Over trunk port.

3.Transparent Mode:

In this mode when you set your mode on transparent switch does not participate in vtp.A
vtp switch does not advertise its vlan configuration and does not synchronize its vlan
configuration based on received message. in this mode you can create or delete or modify
vlan.

Vtp Pruning :

Vtp Prunning reduce flooded unnecessary traffic like broadcast, multicast and

unicast.Vtp save and increase bandwidth by resticting flooded traffic to those trunk
link by which traffic must use to access appropriate network device.by default vtp
does not prune vlan1 traffic.

• Vlan default always prunning illigible.traffic from vlan1 does not pruned in any
situation.
• Vtp pruned does not create delete vlans its only reduce broadcast or multicast
traffic.
