Sociologia I- Sociology I
propostas teóricas disponíveis;
aos paradigmas teóricos;
Objectives: In this discipline we try to give to our students a first approach of the sociology as a
science, with an object and a specific method. We also aim to analyze some basic concepts of
sociology, as well as the importance of this discipline for the conception of social policies.
Competences: At the end of the semester, we hope that students will be able to:
Understand the construction of the sociological perspective as a specific way to look at the social
reality;
Make a rupture with the common sense and built a sociological perspective based on the
theoretical existing proposals;
Know the basics concepts of Sociology and to link them to authors proposals, as well as to the
theoretical paradigms;
Develop competences to gather sources, namely the bibliographical research and to get familiar
with the existing resources, such as libraries and the on-line library of knowledge B-On.
5. Conteúdos programáticos
Syllabus
Como transmitir aos estudantes a perspetiva sociológica? Ou, como se constrói o objeto da
Sociologia?
(Ver Parte I do
Programa).
How can we teach to the students the sociological approach? Or, how can we build the object of
Sociology? The first step is to explain the epistemological rupture by examining the classic authors,
namely Durkheim, who shows that we must make a rupture with the language and the every-day
life way of thinking, with the help of the sociological concepts and the social theories. For example
the scientific concept of Suicide it’s very different from the general ideas about these phenomena.
The second step is the Durkheim’s golden rule method: explain the social by the social. Therefore,
it’s not possible to explain social phenomena by individual facts. (See Part I). For this purpose we
need to introduce the students to the basic concepts of Sociology (Part II) in particular
Socialization, Social interaction, Groups and organizations, Conformity and deviance and Gender
and sexuality. Finally, we explain the importance of this discipline for the conception of social
policies (Part III).
Avaliação: A avaliação será contínua, escrita e oral, comportando dois elementos obrigatórios:
Teaching: The teaching methodology will be based on theoretical-practical classes with two
principal goals. To start with, the professor will explain the contents of the discipline in order for the
students to get familiar with the sociological object and method. The docent will also explain the
basic concepts and the existing theories and paradigms. Finally, in the practical classes, the
students will explain authors’ texts chosen by the professor, in order to identify the principal
concepts which are the basis of the sociological perspective.
Evaluation: Evaluation procedure will be continuous, both written and oral, encompassing two
elements:
The accomplishment of a group research assignment, developed during the semester, which must
be delivered in a written version (65%).
The teaching methodology is based on theoretical and practical classes. The theoretical classes
are very important because the students, normally, do not have any knowledge of Sociology.
Therefore, it is necessary to teach a specific language and a scientific way of thinking which is
given to the students by the presentation of the sociological concepts, theories and paradigms.
Even in the theoretical classes, it is possible for the students to discuss with the professor so as to
understand the objectives of the discipline, in particular to built the sociological approach, more
deeply, namely, to know the importance of the social theory to understand the social and to get ride
of the common ideas.
The oral presentation consists, for each student to give a class on a chapter of an empirical study
in social sciences, chosen by the teacher. This oral presentation it is very useful to develop the
student‘s capacities to speak in public in order to present and explain the fundamental ideas of the
most important studies in Sociology. The evaluation will be continuous, both oral and written.
Therefore, during the semester, students have the possibility to know and discuss important
sociological contents. At the end of the semester, they must be able to accomplishment a written
group research assignment about one of the subjects of the Syllabus. It’s an opportunity to develop
competences to gather sources, namely the bibliographical research.
