Staff nurse assigned to Med/Surg (approximately 50% of the time), Emergency Room (30%), and Operating
Room (20%), depending on the needs of the service and the patient inflow. 275 beds provide complete and
comprehensive health care at the largest facility in Mexicali B.C. (a city of 2 million people) under the IMSS
system. The Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) provides care for all employees of private companies
in Mexico, and is the largest institution health system in Latin America.

In Medical/Surgical wings: Responsible for monitoring vital signs of patients. Administration of medication
via IV/PO/SQ/IM, PR, respiratory treatments and evaluation of those treatments. Establish IV access and take
blood samples. Request laboratory and radiological exams. Monitor and record input and output in patients
with renal failure, gastroenteric and cardiac conditions. Administration of NGT feedings. Responsible for
hygiene and personal care of patient (sponge bath, oral hygiene, wound and dressing care). Remove secretions
with aspiration technique in patients with endotracheal tube. Educate patient and family regarding drug therapy,
activity limitations and need for compliance to treatment regimen. Coordinate care of patient with physicians,
staff nurses, dietitian, social worker, blood bank and respiratory therapists. Document all the nursing activities.

In Emergency Room: Patient admission, transfer and discharge in collaboration with physician. Monitor vital
signs, establish an IV access and take blood samples. Request laboratory and radiological exams. Medication
administration (IV/PO/SQ/IM, PR, respiratory treatments) and evaluation of those treatments. Educate patient
and family regarding drug therapy, activity limitations and need for compliance to treatment regimen.
Document all the nursing activities.

In Operating Room: Verify and check all the room equipment (lights, suction sockets, monitors). Medical files
analysis and verify patient compliance before the surgery. Assist the anesthesiologist throughout the surgical
procedure. Collaboration with the scrub nurse to identify patient, surgery and equipment needed to perform the

programmed procedure and handle sterile surgical material. Establish postoperative care and treatment in
collaboration with the surgeon and PACU nurses to avoid respiratory, hematological and infectious
complications. Educate patient and family regarding drug therapy, activity limitations, care of the operative site
and need for compliance to treatment regimen. Document the procedure, anesthesia provided, and surgical
team.

Provided care for patients with diabetes, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, hypertension, angina pectoris,
hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes, pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, asthmatic crisis, H1N1 flu,
hematological disorders, UTIs, kidney and urethral lithiasis, renal acute and chronic insufficiency, burns,

provided wound and dressing care and administered medication (IV/PO/SQ/IM, respiratory treatments and
evaluation of those treatments).

Clinic #26 is a small dependant clinic in the IMSS system created to assist and provide the 1 st level of attention
services to a city sector of Mexicali B.C. It focuses on prevention and health promotion for the state workers
and their families that are members of the IMSS system.

B.C.
