7 IDIOMATICITY AND CONVENTIONALITY

7.1 Idioms and their properties

Vico (2006, p. 2):

Idioms are an important part of the colloquial language. Even if people are
not aware of it, they are used very frequently in every day speech and very
often, when people have a conversation, they can be used without noticing
them. For this reason idiomatic expressions have been object of several
studies among linguists for the last decades.3

No entanto, a frustração é inevitável,

Ficou complicado?

Observe este idiom: “kick the bucket”.
“Kick the bucket” significa “morrer”. Exemplo:

A: Have you seen Freddy recently?

B: Oh! Don’t you know? Freddie kicked the bucket two months ago. He had a heart attack.

padronizadas e funcionam como “fórmulas”;

comunicativas. É preciso ficar atento aos usos possíveis de cada um;

• simbologia: na grande maioria das vezes os idioms são metafóricos;

estado, atitudes que se manifestam nas relações sociais;

de fala) informais; são parte da cultura oral e da manifestação popular;

outros. É só pesquisar, escolher e aproveitar a leitura.

Lembrete

The term collocation will be used to refer to sequences of lexical items

which habitually co-ocur, but which are nonetheless fully transparent in
the sense that each lexical constituent is also a semantic constituent. Such
expressions as fine weahter, torrencial rain, high winds are examples of
collocations5 (VICO, 2006, p. 6).

5

The couple had a hot argument.

As palavras “hot”

• No final dos anos de 1990 – in the late nineties (e não in the end of the nineties).

• De manhã cedinho – early morning (e não in the morning early).

• Lavar louça – do the dishes (e não wash the dishes).

• Durma bem – sleep tight (e não sleep well).

• Pneu furado – flat tire (e não tire with a hole).

• Marcar um compromisso – set an appointment (e não mark an appointment).

• Boa viagem – safe journey (e não good trip).

• Ir ao médico – see a doctor (e não go to a doctor).

a língua inglesa (escrita e falada).

Lembrete

Os textos orais são ricos em collocations. A melhor maneira de praticá-

las e assimilá-las é assistir a filmes, documentários e seriados em língua
inglesa.

E, é claro, use as
collocations que você quer aprender. A prática é fundamental!

How a mix of female empowerment and steamy soap operas helped bring down Brazil’s
fertility rate and stoke its vibrant economy.

by Cynthia Gorney

José Alberto, Murilo, Geraldo, Angela, Paulo, Edwiges, Vicente, Rita, Lucia,
Marcelino, Teresinha. That makes 11, right? Not including the stillbirth, the three
miscarriages, and the baby who lived not quite one full day. Dona Maria Ribeiro de
Carvalho, a gravelly-voiced Brazilian lady in her 88th year, completed the accounting of
her 16 pregnancies and regarded José Alberto, her oldest son, who had come for a Sunday
visit and was smoking a cigarette on her couch. “With the number of children I had,” Dona
123
Unidade III

Maria said mildly, her voice conveying only the faintest reproach, “I should have more
than a hundred grandchildren right now.”

José Alberto, who had been fishing all morning at the pond on his ranch, was still in
his sweatpants. His mother’s front room in the mid-Brazil town of São Vicente de Minas
was just big enough to contain three crowded-in armchairs, a television, numerous family
photos, framed drawings of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin, and the black vinyl couch upon
which he, Professor Carvalho, retiring head of his university’s School of Economics and
one of the most eminent Brazilian demographers of the past half century, now reclined.
He put his feet up and smiled. He knew the total number of grandchildren, of course: 26.
For much of his working life, he had been charting and probing and writing about the
remarkable Brazilian demographic phenomenon that was replicated in miniature amid his
own family, who within two generations had crashed their fertility rate to 2.36 children per
family, heading right down toward the national average of 1.9.

That new Brazilian fertility rate is below the level at which a population replaces
itself. It is lower than the two-children-per-woman fertility rate in the United States.
In the largest nation in Latin America—a 191-million-person country where the Roman
Catholic Church dominates, abortion is illegal (except in rare cases), and no official
government policy has ever promoted birth control—family size has dropped so
sharply and so insistently over the past five decades that the fertility rate graph looks
like a playground slide.

And it’s not simply wealthy and professional women who have stopped bearing
multiple children in Brazil. There’s a common perception that the countryside and
favelas, as Brazilians call urban slums, are still crowded with women having one baby
after another—but it isn’t true. At the demographic center Carvalho helped found,
located four hours away in the city of Belo Horizonte, researchers have tracked the
decline across every class and region of Brazil. Over some weeks of talking to Brazilian
women recently, I met schoolteachers, trash sorters, architects, newspaper reporters,
shop clerks, cleaning ladies, professional athletes, high school girls, and women who had
spent their adolescence homeless; almost every one of them said a modern Brazilian
family should include two children, ideally a casal, or couple, one boy and one girl. Three
was barely plausible. One might well be enough. In a working-class neighborhood
on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, an unmarried 18-year-old affectionately watched
her toddler son one evening as he roared his toy truck toward us; she loved him very
much, the young woman said, but she was finished with childbearing. The expression
she used was one I’d heard from Brazilian women before: “A fábrica está fechada.” The
factory is closed.

comunicativas diferentes: If you do that, I shall kill you! (Ameaça), If you do
that, I´ll get you some coffee (oferta).

8.1 Convite

• Would you like to dance? (Gostaria de dançar?).

• I’d like to invite you to a party. (Gostaria de convidá-lo para uma festa).
• Could you come to lunch? (Você pode vir para o almoço?).
• Let’s have coffee together. (Vamos tomar um café juntos).
• If you are free, come over! (Se estiver livre, apareça!).
• I’m having a party on Saturday. Would you like to come? (Vou dar uma festa no sábado. Você
gostaria de vir?).

Aceitando um convite:

• Thank you! (Obrigado(a)!).

• I’d love to. (Adoraria).
• Oh, that’s nice of you! (Oh, quanta gentileza!).
• Sure! That sounds like fun! (Claro! Pelo jeito vai ser divertido!).
• Sure, why not? (Com certeza, por que não?).

Recusando um convite:

• I’m sorry I can´t. (Desculpe, mas não posso).

• Thanks but I am busy that night. (Agradeço, mas estarei ocupado nessa noite).
• That’s very kind of you but I have to study for University tests. (É muita gentileza da sua parte, mas
tenho de estudar para a faculdade).
• Sorry but I have to work late. (Desculpe, mas vou trabalhar até tarde).

127

Vejamos algumas:

• In my opinion…

• As I see it…

• From my point of view…

• If you ask me what I think, well, I’d say…

• I believe…

• It seems to me…

Exemplo de aplicação

Leia o diálogo a seguir e identifique, grifando, as expressões usadas para pedir e dar opinião:

Peter: Susan, how do you see globalization?

Susan: Well Peter, if you ask me… well I think it’s great! We can talk to people all over the world,
make friends and the most important: I believe that globalization helps us learn about other countries
and about different cultures!

Sandra: Maria, tell me what you think about the government new economic policies.

Maria: You know what I think? Well, from my point of view, I think the government is doing the
right thing.

Teacher: What’s your opinion about the Internet?

Student: You know what teacher? I think it is great! I love surfing on the net and discovering new
things everyday.

8.5 Expressando habilidades e preferências

Can you…?

O modal can
Observe o
emprego de can nas perguntas seguintes:

Can you write and type letters?

Can you use a computer?

Can you speak English fluently?

Can you speak another foreign language such as French or Spanish?

Can you drive a car?

A: So, Stephen, tell me a little about you.

B: Well, I am 25 years old. I have already graduated in Tourism and Catering at Oxford University. I
am an outgoing person.

A: What about languages, how many foreign languages can you speak?

B: I can speak French and Spanish fluently and I can understand a little German.

A: Good! What about computers?

B: Oh, I just love dealing with customers, clients and tourists. I also enjoy getting to know about
other people’s cultures.

A: That’s good Stephen…We really need somebody like you in our department! Now if you please
follow me. I’ll take you to the office so that you can meet our staff!

Você acha que Stephen possui muitas habilidades? Quais são elas? Em sua opinião, ele será admitido?

Resposta:

alemão, sabe usar o computador e sabe dirigir.

perfer.

I prefer cookies to ice cream.

Prefiro cookies a sorvete.

On holidays, I prefer to stay home.

Nos feriados, prefiro ficar em casa.

Outra forma é empregando a expressão would rather. Nesse caso, would vem contraído.
desejos.
131
Unidade III

I’d rather be sleeping now.

Preferia estar dormindo agora.

I’d rather be sailing now.

Preferia estar velejando.

I’d rather sleep than go out.

Prefiro dormir a sair.

Algumas formas de perguntar as preferências de alguém:

What is your favorite kind of music?

What do you prefer: playing volleyball or playing soccer?

8.6 Pedidos

• com quem você está falando;

• onde você está;

• qual a situação.

Para se fazer pedidos em inglês, a estrutura mais comum é com o uso de modais (can/could/may/
would). Também é importante usar sempre o termo “please”.

Alguns exemplos:

Could I possibly use your phone, please? (Formal).

Would you mind if I use your phone? (Formal).

May I take a look at your newspaper, please?

Do you think I can take a look at your newspaper, sir? (Formal).

Would you please leave the room?

I wonder if you could look after my cat while I am away. (Formal).

132
LÍNGUA INGLESA: ASPECTOS DISCURSIVOS

Can I have your email, please?

Could I have your email, please?

Exemplos:

Stop it.

Come here, love.

Pass me the salt, please.

Go away, all of you guys. I want to be left alone.

Observação

O emprego dos modais can, could e would para se fazer pedidos é

determinado pelo grau de formalidade da situação. Can é o menos formal
e would o mais formal.

Tomorrow it will be cold and dry.

Amanhã o tempo vai estar frio e seco.

The US dollar will rise.

O dólar vai subir.

Doctors will soon find a cure for cancer.

The Government will launch a new economic plan.

O governo irá lançar um novo plano econômico.

133
Unidade III

8.8 Planos

Para falarmos sobre palnos, a forma mais comum é: be + going to + verb (infinitivo).

One day I am going to be a teacher.

Um dia serei professor.

When I graduate I am going to work as a Portuguese teacher in a school near my house.

I am going to save money to buy a new car.

One day I am going to travel to Argentina by plane.

Um dia vou à Argentina de avião.

8.9 Promessas

A: Oh, no! My button has come off and I’m late to work!

B: Don’t worry! I’ll mend it now for you.

A: Will it take long, mum?

B: No sweetie. Just a few minutes.

A: Thanks mum!

B: By the way, can you do me a favour? It’s your sister’s birthday tomorrow. Can you buy her a
present on your way back home?

A: Certainly I will!

B: Here’s the money Bob. Buy her a nice present!

B: But you mustn’t tell her about it. It is going to be a surprise!

A: Don’t worry mum, I’ll keep it a secret. I won’t tell her.

B: By the way… you must take back your library books!

134
LÍNGUA INGLESA: ASPECTOS DISCURSIVOS

A: Ok mum, I’ll do it tomorrow. I won’t forget.

B: It’s ready! Have a nice day sweetie!

A: Thanks, mum!

Veja outros exemplos:

I will always love you!

Vou amar você para sempre!

I will email you when I get there.

Escrevo um email quando chegar lá.

I won’t let you down!

Não vou decepcionar você!

I won’t forget! Don’t worry!

Não vou esquecer! Não se preocupe!

You can count on me!

Conta comigo!

You have my word for it!

Você tem a minha palavra!

I promise I will be on time.

Prometo que vou chegar na hora.

If you lend me U$ 5,000, I’ll pay you back on Monday.

idioma.
Finalmente, voltamos nossa atenção para as funções comunicativas –
functions.

Question 01. Read the dialogue below:

A: Robert, are you going to be in town this weekend?

B: I don’t have anything scheduled yet.
A: We were wondering if you would like to come to Mary’s birthday party next Saturday.
B: I would enjoy coming to Mary’s party. Will it be at your house?
A: The party will be at Jay’s house outside, by the pool.
B: Will everyone be pitching in with some food?
A: It would be great if you could bring a side dish, but the rest of the food will be provided.
B: What should we wear?
A: This is a pool party, so make sure to bring your bathing suit.
B: Sounds like we’ll have a great time. When you’ve figured out the details, drop me an e-mail.

Choose the alternative with the sentence used to invite someone for something:

A) Will everyone be pitching in with some food?

B) What should we wear?

C) The party will be at Jay’s house outside, by the pool.

136
LÍNGUA INGLESA: ASPECTOS DISCURSIVOS

D) We were wondering if you would like to come to Mary’s birthday party next Saturday.

E) Robert, are you going to be in town this weekend?

Resposta correta: alternativa D.

Análise das alternativas

A) Alternativa incorreta.

semântica que denota o convite: “We were wondering if you would like to come to Mary’s birthday
O chunk que indica convite é “We were wondering if you would like to”.

E) Alternativa incorreta.

Question 02. Read the following dialogue.

A: Hey, what’s up?

B: I am not okay.
A: Why?
B: I had the worst date the other night.
A: What happened?
B: First of all, he was half an hour late.
A: That’s not a good start.

137
Unidade III

B: Then he didn’t bother to apologize.

A: That’s rude.
B: Then he drove too fast to the restaurant.
A: That’s dangerous.
B: I thought about getting out and taking a taxi home.
A: What happened at the restaurant?
A: We had a $40 meal, and he left a $1 tip!
B: Yeah, things are definitely not going to work out between the two of you. Just let it be. Someone
better will show up.

A: Yeah, that might happen. But right now I am feeling really down. Sorry.

What does the dialogue express?

A) Surprise.

B) Hope.

C) Sorrow and irritation.

D) Opinion about a product.
