Agnosia
The word Agnosia means "Without Knowledge"

Difintion : it’s when the person lose the ability to

recognize items, people, sounds, smells, and/or
shapes around, even though there isn’t a memory
loss or damage accrued to a specific sense, but it
mostly happens because of a brain damage, injury or
illness in the neurons.
Agnosia isnt a loss of memory : to diffrentiate between
memory loss and Agnosia.

-The woman doesnt have memory loss but she has Visual
Agnosia so she didnt recognize the key by looking at it only
after touching it
- the man has a somatic memory loss, not able to recognize
the keys both ways.
so when Diagnosing the agnosia. the doctor must Exclude
any memory problem because it has nothing to do with
agnosia.

Causes of Agnosia :

Agnosia happens due to :

• Neurological disorder

• Head injury: so when the person had an injury

that affected the brain it might cause Agnosia.

• If the patient had dramatic recovery from

blindness

• Some agnosia are genetic which means that

they transfer from fathers to their children.

Types and forms of agnosia

Agnosia takes 3 main forms which are :

1-the first form is Visual Agnosia : it’s the lose of
ability to recognize items you the person see by eyes
like people and shapes and colors .. etc
2-and the second Auditory Agnosia it’s the loss of
ability to recognize sounds
2-The third form of agnosia is Somatosensory
Agnosia which is inability to perceive items or feel
them when sense stimulated.

There are many types of agnosia which fall under the

three forms of agnosia( The most important ones ):
-Alexia which is the inability to recognize writings
and texts (Falls under the Visual Agnosia)
-Amusia when the patient is not able to recognize
musical notes. (Auditory agnosia)
-Color agnosia is the inability to recognize a color
while able to distinguish it from other colors. (Visual
Agnosia)
- Apraxia : its a type of Agnosia which involves the
inability to map physical action which means the
physical movement of the body is effected by it.in
other word its loss of ability to repeat movements in
a functional way and activities.
- Abulia : its a type of agnosia that is the losing of the
ability to make desision .
- There is Acoria which the person keep feeling
hungry even though he eats alot.
and there are many other types of agnosia

Treatment Of Agnosia
There is no direct treatment or direct cure for
agnosia but there are different therapies that help in
the reverse the effect of Agnosia like
Occupational Therpay
Speech therapy … and others
